**Packers at Lions** (-3.5, 51.5) TNF 8:15 (1 Viewer)

Ballz. pure, unadulterated ballz.
Its foolishness…it will end up costing him in a big game.
maybe, after it wins him 4 or 5 games
yup. I love the killer instinct.

But, honestly, with :28 left on the clock- you kick the FG. DC is a different kinda cat. Last year against SF- ooof. Thisbyear, so far? So good.

I have seen dozens of teams set up a FG in 30 seconds.

I get it- it’s always possible. But the risk/reward there seems like the odds favor taking the points and counting on being able to keep GB from driving in 28 seconds.

If the Bears come around, that division is going to be brutal next year.

That's good for the rest of the NFC. It'll be tough for the North winner to get the bye.

I have been a Lions fan for over 50 years, I like Goff but do not understand the chants and trying to put him in Canton OH

Whew!
Despite giving Green Bay two incredibly short fields, Lions offense kept counter-punching. Can't fault Detroit's D too much either, as this turned out to be the shootout most people expected it to be. Campbell's Gambles mostly paid off, but man, watching those is nerve-racking! Honestly, it's hard to point towards too much that the Pack did wrong, especially considering the way that 2nd half bounced back and forth.

11 in a row for the Lions for the first time in franchise history. Clinch playoffs two years in a row for the first time since 1995. 10 days to get healthier and prepare for Buffalo.

Per Seth Walder, win prob was 82% for the FG, 78.3% going for the 1st down. Not a big difference.

Makes logical sense. What are the odds of converting a 4th and inches? Pretty good. What are the chances of preventing a FG drive in 28 seconds? Probably a little better

But you have to factor in you have a defensive unit with 14 guys out with injuries. Campbell wanted the game in the hands of the players he trusts.

Yes, I agree it’s totally reasonable in context. I think we also can’t overlook the way he uses these decisions to get his players to buy in. I think it means a lot when your coach trusts you to close out games like that

The chant originated in the playoff game against the Rams last year (I was at that game :)). The crowd booed Stafford, and when Goff came out the crowd just broke into the chant. It’s totally caught on, and I love it.

interesting thought experiment the Check the Mic guys (Sam Monson & Steve Palazzolo) have been kicking around for weeks
  • through aggressive decision making, Dan Campbell will give other team high leverage situations over and over again - that's the test other teams will have to pass if they are going to beat the Lions
  • oh you stopped us? well guess what, that doesn't make us timid, we'll still be aggressive & we'll give you more chances - they are relentless
  • tonight he gave Green Bay five opportunities to swing the game and they failed to get the stop 80% of the time
  • it's a little too reductive to just say "oh he's just a dumb coach" - he's clearly a very intelligent guy and has an elite understanding of the mental side of football
    • this is what most coaches says in their opening press conference -
"we're going to be aggressive, we're going to stay aggressive, we're going to take it to the other team, we're not going to be passive in any aspect." then the same guy who says we'll be very aggressive gets to in-game situations & his balls shrivel up
  • Campbell has 100% buy in from his players and staff - everyone on that team loves that their identity is reflected in their brand of football.
  • it permeates every aspect - they run fake punts often, on defense no one else blitzes on 3rd down that much while playing press man. does it always work out? naw, they fail often. they don't care. They're going to keep being aggressive on defense, you will never see Aaron Glenn put them in a shell and let teams matriculate down the filed field.
It's high risk, high reward, high octane - it's a style that should make you uncomfortable. That's the whole point. Not only do they have a great OL, power + speed, maestro QB + elite play caller, they're also going to never be passive and try to milk out a lead. They will always be aggressive.

Someone suggested he's taking chances because he doesn't believe in their talent or thinks they need to steal possessions. The opposite is true.

This is a players game, and players make plays - put the ball game in their hands because you do believe in them. Taking the conventional path is basically saying "OK this moment is too much to put on you, so let's do the smart thing here and punt it away and hope we can stop them." Naw, even better is let's decide it right here right now on this play. You do that because you believe in your guys.

The Athletic had a good profile on Jared a week or two back. Interesting quotes from his wife and Dan Campbell's wife.

Goff delivered, sealing the Lions’ 24-23 victory with an 11-yard pass to star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown just after the two-minute warning — a typically bold Campbell second-down call — and the chants got even louder. When he reached the locker room, his teammates were joyfully mimicking the “Jared Goff” mantra. He cherished the moment, believing it was a one-off.

“I thought that was the end of it,” Goff said. “But yeah, it’s taken on a life of its own.”

The chant resumed a week later at Ford Field as the Lions defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to reach the NFC Championship Game. Soon after, it went viral, surfacing at a University of Michigan hockey game, a Grand Rapids Griffins hockey game and a high school cheerleading competition in eastern Michigan. The chant has since been busted out at Red Wings and Pistons games, at most Lions road games and at Green Day and Creed concerts.

“Now it’s just a fun thing that everybody’s doing when they’re drunk at a bar, which is honestly just as amazing,” Christen Goff said. “I’ve seen it everywhere. People send me videos; I think somebody got married in Italy and a chant broke out. Now I think it’s Michigan’s inside joke.”

Campbell’s wife, Holly, doesn’t see the phenomenon ceasing anytime soon: “I think 50 years from now, Jared Goff chants will still be happening. I think it’s just a thing now. And it’s beautiful, because it is about the underdog fighting adversity and coming out on top.”

Nobody chants his name because they think he's Mr Perfect. They chant his name because he is a flawed athlete who is tough and resilient. He embodies the attitude that "life isn't about what happens to you, life is about how you respond."

I'd be pretty happy if I were a GB fan right now. They can beat this team, and they were never gonna get the bye anyway. Very solid showing in defeat.
If any fan is happy with the choke artist LaFleur I don’t know end to say. He simply shrivels like a raisin in big games. No ball’s and just calls conservative games. He’s really not a great coach.

Im happy LaFleur isn't as stupid

saw this on BlueSky

"The way I look at is this:

Do you think Packers fans wanted them to go for it or kick the field goal and give them the ball back?

If I’m a GB fan I was hoping for the latter."

best reply

I think if you Frank Luntz-style polled diehard fans and ask them if they prefer the opposing team do A or B in a high leverage situation, doing the opposite of their consensus would be a +EV outcome for the opposing team.

OBVIOUS OPI
Is it? He ran a route.

the offensive player has a responsibility to avoid the contact

the onus is on #9 not #31

gonna call that every time
I mean, he barely turned his head and Joseph was already there. He didn’t line up Joseph for a pick.

It’s like having a kid ride his bike into your car when you are sitting still.

yeah, I def see what you mean - it's like when someone makes a left turn in a hallway and inexplicably they look right as they're doing it

usually happens right after you've filled up your coffee mug lol

real time, as soon as it happened, my immediate reaction was "oh yeah, that's just like Cole Kmet on Thanksgiving - twice. Offensive guy has to avoid the contact for it to be a rub route, otherwise it's a pick play."

looking at it postgame, I'm not sure they got it right.

I had to get up very early this morning so I watched the 1st half live, then watched the 2nd half this morning.

This was all about grit, determination, and resiliency. After the interception, they said Goff was 13 of 13. He's the most resilient player I've ever seen in sports.

What a win.

Reed 0.0 pts not how I want in a bunch of playoff games that is going to leave a mark
It's bizarre. This guy is electric with the ball and he has 1 target.

I don't remember the last time I took a zero in my lineup. Not what you are looking for going into the playoffs...now it's either Waddle, Hopkins, or... Thielen maybe? Full on :tfp:
Get used to the zeros

:ptts:

Well, either way the whole 2nd half I thought whoever had the ball last would win. IMO Detroit would have methodically moved down the field and scored a TD instead of a FG.

But that would have been more fun to watch, selfishly!!

Packers scored 4 out 5 possessions in the second half.

+ a 70 yard TD drive to end their first half.

MCDC wanted to win it right there, not take a chance the defense could make a stop.

He told the team he was going to coach aggressively & lean on the offense.

Then he did what he said he was going to do.

I agree about LaFleur but no way would I want that meathead for my head coach.

The meathead has beaten the Packers 6 of the last 7.
How many Super Bowls does he have?
Actually, one.

He played on the Giants in 2000 and WON the Super Bowl with the Saints in 2009.

Unfortunately, while he was a member of the 2009 Saints, he never got a ring. Hurt in TC, was on IR all year.

Who gets a ring is up to the team, so Dan Campbell not getting a ring is because the team only gave them to players on the 53-man roster.

Okay now it all makes sense

Nice win by the Lions. Their defense looks like it may be in trouble though. Starting to show signs of cracking with these second halfs.
