5 Days in London in December (1 Viewer)

Churchill war rooms are a great stop, centrally located, not a long trip. It's the bunker he lived/worked in during the blitz. Imperial war museum, the shard, and globe theater south of the river. Harrod's food halls for lunch. Tate and Tate modern and the courtauld collection - on the strand if you like art. Outside of town Hampton court and Windsor castle are great half day trips.

Go to an EPL match.
Which one of these would be easy to get to and wouldn't be crazy expensive. Don't really care if the match is good just looking for good time, good atmosphere:

AFC Bournemouth v Manchester United #BOUMUN

Aston Villa v Arsenal #AVLARS

Crystal Palace v Southampton #CRYSOU

Leicester City v Chelsea #LEICHE

Liverpool v West Bromwich Albion #LIVWBA

Manchester City v Swansea City #MCISWA

Norwich City v Everton #NOREVE

Sunderland v Watford #SUNWAT

Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United #TOTNEW

West Ham United v Stoke City #WHUSTK

Tottenham is closest look on map for White Hart lane

Crystal Palace is having a great start and their atmosphere looks awesome on TV

Was there last December. Amazing city.

Tower of London tour is a must do.

Second the Churchill Museum.

We went to a session of parliament, not sure it's a must do.

I would take at least one day that's just pub crawling - I loved the food there.

Something kind of cool that the wife may or may not go for is the Hippodrome casino will show every NFL game in a room they have with waitresses and food, etc. My brother and I did it last year and it was a blast watching football with a lot of ex-pats.

Oh, and get a dinner at Belgo and get the Moules Frites. I had a lot of good food there, that was my favorite place.

Don't do the London Eye.

Do see St. Peter's cathedral

If you like Egyptian stuff the British Museum is great.

I did really like Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, I didn't even know about the Churchill museum

NFL sounds great but no way I'm pulling that off.

Looking at Churchill Museum and that does look interesting.

Pub day is definitely happening.

London Eye was one of the touristy things I don't think I'm getting out of. What was bad about it?

If it's not too cold out, hit the borough market. We went back here twice for lunch, the diverse food options are amazing. It's right across the river from the tower of london.

A coworker of mine who hates traveling listed this as the only thing he liked from his trip. Guy doesn't like anything. On the list for sure.

Its probably going to be a little far since you are there for only 5 days, but taking a train out to Cambridge and spending the day there is a cool thing to do.

I've been to both White Hart Lane and Selhurst Park. Both are a short (<30 min) train rides from Central London with a 10 min hike from the station. Neither is in a particularly scenic part of London or physically impressive in an American stadium way. But they're funky and hold the noise in creating a great atmosphere.

We may be up for this, will look into it. Thanks for heads up.

Is this a day thing?
probably a half day thing. Tube will take you right there. If you want to make it a bit more, you can grab a bus over to Blackheath, which is also a really cool small town.

St. Paul's is the church you want.

I'm out of likes. Will check these out.

Personal favorite museums

Victoria and Albert: good traveling exhibitions and and a tremendous collection of Imperial loot. The plaster casts of famous sculptures are very cool

National Portrait Gallery: all portraits, all the time. Not anything special from a artistic POV but a fascinating view of British history

Half day is doable. This is the first part of a bigger trip so we are lugging stuff around and if it was overnight type thing that may be deal breaker. We both like seeing smaller towns so this sounds interesting.

Just did some looking online and this place looks like a pretty awesome place to walk around and grab a beer.

Going to push to get this added to the itinerary.

Update?

It looks like work is sending me to London in May. For some reason, I'm not terribly excited. If the wife decides to go, it would be a week(ish) (two days for work). One option was to stay in London the entire time. The other was to train around Europe, hitting 4 or 5 countries. Just to say we've been there.

Would be interested in hearing what people budget for a week in Europe. I know everyone is different, just trying to ballpark.

KC: Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, London is doable in a week by train (with at least one weekend included). But it will not be total immersion, more like "Today is Tuesday so this must be Hong Kong".

Personally not a big fan of London but I have been there oodles of times. Prefer Paris, despite the Parisians. I like Antwerp over Brussels (I know Antwerp very well and Brussels not so well) also, but pretty sure you have to change trains in Brussels to go Paris-Antwerp.

If you want immersion, just do London and Paris. Both places have enough for a week easy. Taking the train there and back is easy.

Depends on what you like. Personally I could do nothing but pubs and museums, but if you're with your wife you have to hit Paris. It's a simple train trip. More cities than two will be too much.

I like to move around a lot so I would mix in Paris but much more than that would mean you are on trains the whole time. London for a couple days, Paris for a couple of days is pretty hard to beat.

Did a lot of the things in London listed from people in here. I couldn't swing the EPL game, was crazy expensive and the times just didn't work. Was bummed about that.

For London highlights were: Tower of London / Beefeater tour. Borough Market. Walking the neighborhoods, hitting pubs. Churchill Museum.

We did Paris on this same trip. Had been there before so we did more walking, and hanging in the street side cafes than the big touristy stuff. If you like cheese, wine, we did a tour called "Paris By Mouth". Small tour with 2 other couples led by a woman through St. Germain neighborhood. Was cool, very informative.

For budget: Those cities were comparable to NYC I think. Can easily drop 100-200 on a dinner for 2 or you can get some cheap and easy food. We had amazing food everywhere both expensive and cheap, very easy to find. Museums were really good deals. Transportation by trains in both cites is super cheap. Paris seemed more expensive than London in general.

FYI for anyone in the future, the Shard is so much better then the London Eye. Also for even non religious people, Westminster is a must. I went four times over the span of a year when showing friends and family around and it was the one place that never stopped amazing me.

Just got back from a work trip. This was the first place I hit when we hit the ground. Luckily our hotel was within walking distance.

Didn't have time to do much else, but all my co-workers raved about Dishoom for Indian food. Was able to hit this on our last night and it was outstanding. I think they have a few locations around the city.

We walked right by but did not go in or check it out.
It's just a view. There are dozens of better places to have a drink. It's like fake posh for tourists, so you pay the prices.

Borough Park is cool, in the same vein I loved Camden Lock. Similar layout, but clothes and leather and antiques and such.
