5 Europe games coming over the next 7 weeks. Might want to pay attention. (1 Viewer)

As I mentioned in the J Warren thread, in my big national redraft contests, 8 of 14 leagues* had a Warren owner that took a 0. I had him in only 1 league but managed to sub out for Harvey (that worked out well). Anyway it's kind of a big deal to take a 0 when you don't have to. It's one thing when a player starts and gets hurt on the third play like Xavier Worthy. Simply nothing you can do about that. But when the news comes out and you're asleep, well... God bless you. Here is the outlook coming up if any FF players here think this matters. Check out how many names are involved.

London 630 am kickoff Pacific time the next three Sundays in London and then a 2 week respite before 2 more Europe games. Newsflash.

MIN @ CLE
DEN @ NYJ
LAR @ JAX

ATL @ IND in Germany week 10
WAS @ MIA in Spain week 11

not sure who is a must start on CLE besides Judkins
Jefferson, Mason
Dobbins, Sutton, Nix, Fields, Wilson, Breece but I think Mims is a strong flex as well
Puka, Adams, Kyren, ETN
Bijan, Taylor, Pittman, Warren
Daniels, Deebo, Waddle, Achane

quite a few other realistic options during bye weeks, lot of TEs that aren't auto starts but worthy. Strange, Waller, Ertz, Pitts, M Taylor, Engram, Njoku and Fannin, Hockenson.

Others like Addison, Jeudy, B Thomas (can't believe I'm saying that), London, whoever emerges as the MIA #2 post Tyreek, Tillman and McLaurin easily guys that might be Questionable going into a Sunday morning kickoff.

Somewhere between decent and desperation RB plays for guys like me, Harvey, Ford, I Davis, Corum, Tuten, Allgeier, Bill, Gordon all worthy of possibly throwing in your lineup. and therefore worth taking a look at. Oh and Stafford, Tua, Indiana Jones, are easy starts the others less so.

ok so just saying those are 48 names that are *very* fantasy relevant with Europe kickoffs over 5 of the next 7 weeks.

*those national redraft leagues are $350 per and the regular season is only 12 weeks long. Only the top 4 get into the league playoffs and only the top 2 make it to the Big Dance so it is paramount that you perform as an owner at your very best. 1 seed goes to best record. 2 seed goes to most pts scored out of remaining teams. 3 seed goes to remaining best record, 4 seed to most pts scored out of remaining teams. So taking an L is huge even just taking the 0 is a big deal though because pts accumulated are huge. One L out of 12 matchups is 8.3% of your season in the negative direction (and +8.3 for your opponent). All because they didn't want to set an alarm and be awake for 15 minutes. Always could have gone back to sleep after but dang is it significant to be alert for these things.

last note as I said in the Warren thread, things happen ALL THE TIME in warmups. Player X might have been 100% all week and then slips in the shower, tweaks something in warmups, or gets robbed in a foreign country and sustain minor injuries or get arrested or who knows but I would NEVER rest easy on Saturday night thinking my lineups are fine. Coked out, drunk still, hungover I don't care. Only exception is being out of wifi or cell range. Like I sometimes am when I'm camping but the fall rains just came and that outdoor season is over now. Ok rant over but I just wanted to show a little of the scope of this.

In one of my leagues, a manager accidentally left Warren in and when he woke up complained over DMs to the commissioner that the situation was unfair because of the very early time in the morning that Warren was scratched. The commissioner agreed to swap another player into that manager's starting lineup. When this was made public, everyone complained and the commissioner then reversed his decision and re-inserted Warren and his 0 points. The Warren manager reacted by throwing a fit and quitting the league, with the commissioner charitably refunding his buy-in out of the commish's own pocket.

Sounds like he shouldn't be commissioner. Not everyone is cut out for the job.

Edited to add - I have a contingency rule in 3 of my leagues. We have a weekly contingency thread.

------------
Post replacement players for players who are inactive.

Word of warning, if you name a replacement player for someone who is inactive, he cannot be in as your non-starter tiebreaker. That will invalidate your contingency player to be used as a replacement.

per our rules:
E. ALLOW POST OF BACKUP PLAYER FOR AN INACTIVE PLAYER AND MUST BE DONE BEFORE EITHER PLAYER'S GAME STARTS. Also, make sure the player you're using as a replacement isn't also your tie-breaker player. If it is, then you cannot use as a replacement. Once designated and player he is replacing is Out, and replacement player’s game starts, he must be used.
------------

As commish, I stay on top of players on a bye and injuries. Two things happen when teams start players on a bye or start inactive players that directly compromises league integrity. You have the owner who isn't paying attention, or you have the owner who is delibertately tanking. Both affect league integrity. One, it affects teams trying to make the playoffs and giving a free win to another team because someone isn't paying attention is not tolerated. Two, if a team is playing players on a bye or those that are inactive and is trying to better his draft position, that also affects league integrity and isn't tolerated. Besides having the weekly contingency thread, if I'm signed on and notice someone playing a player on a bye or a player that is inactive, and they haven't used the contingency thread for the latter, I'll replace such player with someone on their bench. If I miss it, then it stands as it is. When league integrity fails, either by allowing teams to better their draft position, or giving a free win to a team that affects league standings, I've seen dynasty leagues fold because of this.

I think this is problematic because it helps some and hurts some. It should be an all or nothing. I also don't like the idea of a Commish just changing someone's lineup on their own. That could lead to issues too. I get you want to minimize the "blank" in the lineup but if it isn't all or nothing it adds more unfairness and could lead to you getting labeled as playing favorites. "How come you changed his lineup when he faced me but didn't change my lineup when I made the same mistake?"

Now as a Commish if/when I notice a team has an inactive or bye week guy in the lineup I will try and contact the owner to have them change their lineup. This is much easier these days as everyone can use their phone to make a change and it takes two minutes. But I won't actually make a lineup change if I cannot get ahold of someone.
These things are terrible and at some point we are adults and you need to be accountable for your own business. We have instituted a nominal fine if you play a bye week player or a guy that was ruled out at least 48 hrs before the start of the game (so Friday for Sunday games) and that has helped a little. I mean there is no excuse to have a guy on bye in your lineup. It takes 2 minutes to scan your lineup and make sure you don't have anybody on bye in your lineup.

That is just terrible commish-ing.

I took a zero for Warren. I checked the night before and everything said he was on track to play so that was good enough for me not to wake up at 6:00 on a Sunday to triple check. I would never dream of complaining and asking to be able to switch him out after the fact, however. That is really weak.

All around, at every step of the process.

My response would have been “you knew there was an early start time. You knew your player was Q. It’s on you to wake up and check, or send me your contingency request prior to kick-off. There’s nothing “unfair” about it.”

And this is why the commish CANNOT make that change. Most people would never dream of asking but then some yahoo does and the commish allows it. Just terrible.

yeah we instituted the replacement thread policy years ago before covid even. sometimes people are travelling or know they're going to be away from a device and they can post their possible subs if player x is made inactive, or even by position.

it never really gets used much, and we always have it in our rules that if you email or contact the commish (or make a post in the thread) then you're covered as long as it's before kickoff of players involved.

Gonna remind that even players who are 100% on Saturday night can have stuff go down before kickoff. I think it's imperative to get up and be checking the news until the actual moment of kickoff and you can go back to bed if you need to. if it's a league for money. if it's purely for fun I respect the idea of anything goes, but I personally think any game being played between humans is better when all participants are active. Whether it's for money or whether it's Risk, Clue, or a kids soccer game. Blaise participants suck in any group endeavor. But FFS I get it I never liked getting up that early when I was younger and as much **** as I've talked here with this thread and the Warren thread - I wake up at like 5:45 without an alarm every day so it's moot for me.

Another angle - it was week 4 so nobody is thinking about the repercussions of little lineup decisions in terms of the fantasy playoff picture. Not yet. But in weeks 10 and 11 for example, the playoff picture is going to be in people's minds and when somebody throws up a 0 like this and you need them to beat their opponent to help your playoff chances - one can take that one direction and say well dude if your team is that marginal then maybe do better next year and it won't matter OR one might get pissed and say everyone is supposed to set their best most competitive lineup each week and a 0 isn't punishment enough.

In our longest running home league we just made a new rule with a $50 fine going into the kitty anytime someone does something like this or injured/on bye. And it extends to owners who have been eliminated from the playoffs and in addition the $50 they won't be invited back. Like my commish is hardcore about it. She just took over for the original one and was like we're not having incomplete lineups anymore. Because when you *need* other teams to win or lose and this **** goes down people get upset.

We have the same fine for playing a player on bye or a guy ruled out 48 hrs before the game.
