9/11 Museum has a gift shop (1 Viewer)

People should be more outraged at the salaries of the "executives" who run the charity.

That's some serious money. Saw this, too (bottom of article):

The National September 11 Memorial and Museum cost a total of $700 million to build, and will cost about $60 million to run each year – $10 million of which will be devoted to security – making it the most expensive memorial in the nation by far.

So the FDNY wants to talk crap about people having contracts? Don't they have a contract and a pretty good one? May want to walk that one back. And really you can't just look at these salaries in a vacuum. How do they compare to other people doing similar jobs at similar venues in NYC?

I bought an FDNY shirt, a magnet and a coffee table book when I visited last year. The place made an impact on me and I was glad for the opportunity to buy some keepsakes.
The gift shop wasn't open last year...

Yeah there isn't less work because it's a charity. There is a going rate for someone to do that job. How many times have you taken the offer which paid 1/3 of your other offers? I am going to guess not very often, if ever. So if the going rate is 300kish then it is. If that is in excess of what similarly experienced people make doing the same job then we may have a problem.

If you are going to do a comparison try the US Holocaust Museum, it's more apt. You'll notice that person makes way more than 370k.

This was a huge undertaking involving a massive capital campaign and significant ongoing operations. Those numbers don't seem all that out of whack to me considering the size and scale of what we're talking about. Hell, Otis is a working stiff commuting to the city every day and makes way more than those guys.

Any observations or report on the museum itself, then?

Some of the gift shop sounds crass (jewelry, tshirts that say "9/11" or "911" on them), some of it not at all (FD and PD hats and t-shirts sound ok to me); but wait 10 years and see how bad it gets.

If you are OK with executive salaries for something like Burger King, I don't know why you'd object to them for people who work to create and manage an important memorial.

It should have a gift shop, but I'd expect it to be appropriate. If they have inflatable twin towers or a Starbucks bear in an FDNY costume that's pretty ####ed up.

Guessing all of those places aren't in NYC either. Location has a huge impact on a salary for exact same position/job.

Does the person doing your job make the exact same wages everywhere in the country?

Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust Director - $271k

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Director - $222k

Buffalo Bill Historical Center CEO - $193k

CIA Officers Memorial Fund Director - $136k
So it is possible to do charity work for less than $370k? Hmmm...
Guessing all of those places aren't in NYC either. Location has a huge impact on a salary for exact same position/job.

Does the person doing your job make the exact same wages everywhere in the country?
Actually, pretty much yes.

 Arlington National Cemetary has a gift shop, as long as the money is going to the right places then it shouldn't be an issue.

FC42's father in law, main actor... Real FDNY captain (now retired) - Dude lost his entire ladder on 9/11 - Thank god it was his day off... Guy got down there, but the buildings had collapsed by the time he got there. Dude dug through Ground Zero and then was on scene for months. Dude is a beast

They wanted a real firefighter for this commercial.

It's not like they're selling replica buildings with planes sticking out. The gifts seem appropriate and tasteful. No problem here.
this fall the will be a line of halloween costumes.
walmart will be supplying them.

In the minds of many, Osama Bin Laden was a man that most people don’t need to be reminded of in their everyday lives.

Now, a Bin Laden-themed Halloween costume on sale in the U.S. has attracted a number of complaints for doing just that.

Walmart is being pressured to pull its turban-themed costume from its website, after the Halloween outfit was deemed “insulting” by U.S.-based Sikh community.

I bought an FDNY shirt, a magnet and a coffee table book when I visited last year. The place made an impact on me and I was glad for the opportunity to buy some keepsakes.
The gift shop wasn't open last year...
Sure it was. I was inside. There were several actually.
umm the 911 museum just opened
They had some of it opened already and there was a gift shop. Great discussion though.
 The 9/11 Memorial was open last year. There were off-site gift shop - not part of the site.

The 9/11 Museum has been open a few days. The 9/11 Museum gift shop - on site - opened a few days ago.

The site is the final resting spot for 8,000 unidentified body parts of 9/11 victims. This ism't some quirky pedantic distinction, Aaron. It's kind of important to the folks who were a little closer than you were 13 years ago or today.

FTR I found the Memorial to be very simple and beautiful and powerful. I was unprepared for how overwhelming it is.

I have not been to the Museum, and likely never will be. I wish they would have stopped with the Memorial. But the victims families wanted one. Now the victims families are unhappy people treat it like an attraction and not a memorial. Oh, wait...

This.

You're kidding me, right?

The 9/11 museum’s cavernous boutique offers a vast array of souvenir goods. For example: FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority Police T-shirts ($22) and caps ($19.95); earrings molded from leaves and blossoms of downtown trees ($20 to $68); cop and firefighter charms by Pandora and other jewelers ($65); “United We Stand” blankets.

There are bracelets, bowls, buttons, mugs, mousepads, magnets, key chains, flags, pins, stuffed animals, toy firetrucks, cellphone cases, tote bags, books and DVDs.

Even FDNY vests for dogs come in all sizes.
:yucky: :X
This is America good for them, may we never forget

So, it's ok for the Memorial to have a gift shop? Was that news last year? Were people outraged about it too?

So I suppose everyone hating on the gift store want to use federal tax money to pay for everything? I'm down personally.

I think it's run by a not-for-profit and does not receive government funding. They'd just have to raise admissions, or try to get more donations.

(I'm fine with the gift store though.)

Personally, I'm waiting for the rollercoaster.

Just as it looks like you're going to smash into two buildings, WOOSH, you swerve away safely. Be sure to buy our six foot tall Lego replica on the way out. When you push a button, a little yellow figure bursts into fire and jumps from the top! Only $399.99. Never forget!

I've been to more than my share of museums. I cant think of a single one that doesn't have an overpriced gifts shop.

Me too. And I usually assume (whether right or wrong) that the proceeds from the sales go to keeping the place running.
