90 min. Q&A with JOHN CLAYTON today (1 Viewer)

T. Jackson (MIN) - He will strugle and could lose his job. Does not handle preasure well.To who, Bollinger?
having seen the poor guy play a few times last year (including his disaster at Lambeau) i think he could lose his job to Brian Sipe and i wouldn't be surprised.

5 stars for the OP. Great info dude. Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate the Thanks from all. Just trying to do my part. FBG's has been a part of my FFB preperation since it's CheatSheets.com (Was that the old, old name?) days. Between the staff info and message boards, it's the best one stop spot that can be found. The staff contributes to that, but the info (not always the opinions) shared on this board are the most helpful I have found anywhere.

There's that Welker Note Again: ".......... will/may lead the team in receptions."

Seems to be coming from several sources.

That Portis information makes me want to throw up in my mouth after drafting him at 4.10 4.08 yesterday.
:(
Had JC said Portis eats healthy all the time made you guys :gang1:  :gang1:
No, but Portis to me, based on his "nagging injuries" has been a guy with questionable fire at times in the past. Now he's had his flashes, some warrior like, high carry games in DC last year, but he gets a lot of dings. As many backs get, and you hope a guy will have the desire to persevere, but hearing that in the prime of his life, with the limited window of an NFL back and an even more limited effective and dominant window, I'd like to see him value his body and not try to get heavy. I wouldn't do cartwheels if he were drinking protein shakes all day, but this kind of info worries me for more than just the diet.

Great stuff. Reaffirms some of my picks from a few days ago. I grabbed Greg Jennings as my #4 WR in a TD league. I was hoping he'd get some better looks this year.

As an recovering Barlow-aid-aholic I will be taking everything under consideration without considering any of it gospel in any way.

F. Taylor & MJD (JAC) - Taylor talking like he's going for 1,500 this year.
S. Jackson (STL) - Says 2,500 yds is in reach.
Personally, as an MJD owner, I'm PRAYING Freddy comes out pushing for that, he'll be blown up by Week 3, and MJD will be on the cover of all your fantasy rags next year.
I was thinking the same thing. AS my RB3, I would love this so that he can fill in nicely for RJohnson week 4 and LT week 7. I wouldn't mind having Fred for the first few weeks if he's tearing it up, but his contract in my league is too high....Back on task, it sounds like the Jags are going to run the guy into the ground and I'm OK with that. The best way to avoid a RB controversy is have Fred play well and then when he can't play due to injury, MJD steps in with no public outcry....

First off, thanks for sharing. He's well-connected, so I'm always interested to hear what he has to say.

At the convention that year he said Barlow would be a beast.
I remember this (and Wood's article), and it's one reason I take Clayton with a grain of salt. It would be interesting to see what the hit rate was for those '04 predictions. I remember a lot of them missing the mark, but it may be the old selective memory thing (and bitterness of one who drank the Barlow Cool Aid).
:hophead: If you're expecting even those closest to the game to be 100% in their projections, you have problems. Putting yourself into a good position to compete and maybe win your league requires a lot more than picking a team based on who the pundits are hyping.
*sigh* I missed this before. [sarcasm alert] Yes, I expected him to be 100% accurate and I always pick my team purely based on what people at ESPN tell me. Suzy Kolber is picking my team this year. I hear we're going Favre in the first round. [/sarcasm alert]We are actually kind of saying the same thing...apparently my original post didn't really come across the way I meant it to. I was even allowing that my recollection of his '04 predictions may be biased. Clayton knows a lot about what's going on around the league (certainly more than I do). Without going way into it, he also has a bit of a flair for the dramatic that makes me take opinions like "2500 yards for S. Jackson a possibility" with a grain of salt. Anyway, sorry to take this off topic. As I read over them again a few things stick out to me:1. The Portis and Lamont Jordan info., esp. as it relates to their long-term prospects (i.e. keeper/dynasty)2. The positive talk about Lee Evans is becoming deafening. 3. This is about the 4th time I've heard someone in the media say they think Welker could lead the Patriots in receptions. I'm not sure how truly independent these opinions are, but it's an awful lot of people thinking the same thing. I agree with others that he may not lead the Patriots WRs in yardage or TDs, but man could he be a bargain in a lot of drafts.

T. Jackson (MIN) - He will strugle and could lose his job. Does not handle preasure well.To who, Bollinger? :lmao:
I thought the exact same thing when he said that. But he said it so maybe there's something to it.I have read other places that the coaches like Jackson's progress so far. But maybe that's just what their telling the reporters. Clayton's giving his opinion on the players in most cases. Some is what he is told, but most are his observations.
This could make things interesting:Fanball: 08/27 Vikings: Bollinger on the bubble? The NewsThe Vikings are two of four teams that have contacted the Eagles regarding the possibility of acquiring backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Vikings might be in the market for a No. 2 signal caller following Brooks Bollinger's lousy performance during Saturday's preseason game. Our ViewThe Eagles run the same offense as the Vikings, so the assumption is that Holcomb wouldn't need much classroom time to make the transition.

Thanks for capturing all of that! Short and sweet is great... you got the meat of it :)

I've owned Welker the past two years in a league that awards return yards and I'm hoping I can get him again, but am afraid this will be the first year other owners find him interesting :( He's already been top 10-20 in our format so I expect huge things from him this year.

That Gore comment about beasting his way out of the league in a few years was interesting. I also wish I could've seen the Portis conversation on TV or something. I'm curious how defensive he got... or how indifferent he was to the question/answer...

Thanks again :lmao:

So because Portis eats McDonalds, you have buyers remorse? I just don't get that. I swear people are walking on eggshells with this guy this year and I just don't see it. Maybe I'll be wrong, but if I'm right you have a 1300-12+ td guy on the cheap.I can see myself sarcasticly saying "Boy how he breaks off 80 yard td's with tendinitis and big macs in his system is beyond me".

If he breaks off an 80 yard TD in the NFL this season, you can have permant possession of signature. Those days, that blocking scheme and that incarnation of Portis is LONG gone. Not to say he can't be serviceable, not to say he can't contribute to a fantasy title or an NFL teams success, but he is not the breakaway, rampaging force of his youth.

Really fascinating stuff ;)

I miss the information that convention brought me, but I don't miss the trek up to Pittsburgh :)

The most startling things I read in his comments were:

*** That Chad Pennington might lose his job???

*** That LaMont Jordan would be gone next year; I think he's looked BY FAR like the best offensive player on the Raiders so far

Great post!!!!

That's why I come here for stuff like this.

Even though John Clayton reminds me of Gollum he has great information. :homer:

This caught me off guard as well. Jordan has looked good in preseason action.

Is Portis really going at the end of the 4th rd? Unbelievable.

Short of an ACL tear, there is nothing I could read or hear between now and my draft that would convince me Portis is not great value in the 4th rd.

Best post with most valuable info I've seen in a long time. This is what the shark pool needs more of, inside info.

Thanks Digit

I don't know about the love for contact but when Sirius NFL Radio was at Niner's camp about two weeks ago they said that Gore was a workout warrier. He didn't stop running etc. from the time they got there until the time they left, something like 4 hours. He was pissed that Robinson, Hicks & Clayton were getting work with the first team in practice & pre-season games while he was sidelined. He took it as an insult (not sure why as he was in a cast and obviously couldn't play.) He's an incredibaly dedicated athelete. Now, will he break down due to the accumulation of injuries and/or because of his strenous workout regime? Verry possibly, but you can't play this game trying to predict injuries. As long as he's healthy I want him on my team. He's a Larry Johnson like workhorse & I'll ride him until the wheels fall of the wagon.
What's he like in a PPR league? will he catch alot out of the backfield?

1) While I'm a big fan of Clayton and penned a very lengthy article from this very event a few seasons ago, much of what Clayton says is opinion and a good deal of it will be wrong2) I think FBG has exploded by leaps and bounds in its access to "inside" information thanks to The Audible especially. If you're not listening to The Audible, you've missed a boatload of information from people in the locker rooms on a daily basis. Sigmund and Cec have interviewed at least one major beat writer from each team, not to mention countless other NFL luminaries including Adam Schefter, Adam Caplan and others.3) As to the Shark Pool...I can't think of a place that has a more well rounded coverage, can you? If there's a piece of NFL news, rumor or innuendo, it makes its way here in hypertime.

First, I'm not criticizing the content of the pool, not at all I wouldn't be here if I didn't consider it useful and informative. Second isn't everything we talk about before they play the game speculation, rumor or opinion? You just have to be able to take value from what you consider to be a good source and I for one consider JC a good enough source.Again I'm not at all criticizing the content at all this is my second year and I will continue to subscribe but sometimes the short sweet comments are more useful than the longer audibles. Two different but useful pieces of info.

Yeah, I fully agree on Jordan - - don't know where that's coming from. But on Pennington - - really, you're surprised by that? Maybe it's more how good Kellen Clemens has looked in the preseason than anything Chad has done to downgrade himself . . . but it's been pretty clear that Clemens is a serious talent. I'd rate Pennington's job as less secure than Grossman's.

This situation smells of Bledsoe/Romo to me. I really like Clemens as a guy that emerges in the second half, could be a very nice stash for the strecth run.

That statement is 100% correct. What Clayton does at this thing is just go off of what he has seen and what he thinks of the player. It is more his opinion, then what others are telling him. While I'm sure he's told endless amounts of info while on his camp tour, you can see when he's really passionate about a player, good or bad, it's because of his own observations. So I guess if he is a poor judge of talent, were doomed if we follow him. I take it as just one more peice of info, another opinion to consider when making my final assesment of a player.

I can't speak for others, but the fact that he eats McDonalds doesn't bother me by itself. It's the fact, if true, that he doesn't take care of himself that is troubling. Some players to everything possible to keep their body in shape year round, and others let it go in the offseason. Maybe he's not getting up to 300lbs or anything, but maybe his not so finely tuned body is slower to recover, easier to injury, not what it used to be??? It's possible.

I think Jordan looked very slow and unimpressive vs the Rams.

T. Jackson (MIN) - He will strugle and could lose his job. Does not handle preasure well.To who, Bollinger?
saw this in another thread...NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports that the Vikings have acquired Kelly Holcomb for a sixth-round pick in 2008.Brooks Bollinger's poor effort in Minnesota's third preseason game didn't help. While Bollinger may remain on the roster, Holcomb has more experience and knows Brad Childress' system. He's no threat to Tarvaris Jackson, but should be the backup eventually.

I too was in attendance. I was the big guy in the NOTRE LAME shirt.

Clayton is the MAN! No Doubt!

4-digit did leave out Clayton repeatedly stating that "CLEVELAND SUCKS!!!!!"

Oof:

JP Lossman (BUF) - is looking very good and is clicking well with Evans.L. Evans (BUF) - He could not say enough good things about Evans. Super star, top 5, you name it. He loves Evans this year.C. Williams (TB) - Expects a rebound. Presence of Garica will improve his receptions as Garica has history of throwing to RB's. Possible 45 - 50 rec's. With that said, he also said Pitman will get some 3rd down work.L. Jordan (OAK) - Saw Jordan this year and said he thought he looked like Art Shell with his big belly. Will be cut after this year.R. Moss (NE) - Skills are declining. Still fast but takes longer to get to full speed.MIAMI - Expects team to be better then most do. Thinks T. Green will be OK.S. Jackson (STL) - Says 2,500 yds is in reach.
