A. J. Jenkins (1 Viewer)

Another thing I need to remind myself is that we have been spoiled by instant success rookies the last few years at all positions. Just because a guy does not come in a produce year one doesn't mean he is a bust. This attitude is going to present some nice opportunities for those that can be more patient.I am not saying Jenkins is going to be successful, however I think it is too early to write him off. I also think he is in a good position (good system, good young qb) to succeed.

I understand your stance here, but there are some issues that need to be discussed about Jenkins. It's not about instant success, he produced nothing. Not a misprint. NOTHING. He was active in a total of three games and had one target. One. Teams do not draft 1st round WRs as "projects". It's not as if he's being shifted from a college QB to a wideout either. My guess is that it's difficulty with the playbook or he was a really bad selection.

They didn't draft him as a project, but when they found out he wasn't as ready as they thought he didn't get to play because they weren't desperate at WR. Reggie Wayne's rookie year (27/345/0) was a massive disappointment considering he was handed a starting job opposite a HOF WR with a HOF QB throwing the ball. The bottom line I guess is either you trust the 49er's judgement or you don't.

The team had pretty decent depth at the beginning of the season (Crabtree, manningham, moss, Kyle Williams) and doesn't use 3-4 WR sets very often. As was the case with James at RB, I don't think his early inactivity proves much one way or another about his knowledge of the playbook. I'm more concerned about the fact that they brought chad hall off the street to play in Jenkins' place down the stretch. With moss probably leaving and manningham and Williams still rehabbing, I would carefully watch what SF does in the offseason. If they mostly stand pat at the position, it's probably a good indicator that harbaugh thinks Jenkins is ready to step up. If they throw a bunch of resources at WR again, I'd take it as a sign that he is a project at best.

If it was as easy as trusting the franchise's judgement, it's a swing and miss because they brought in a street FA over any possibility to play Jenkins. If you're not a fan of labeling him a project, that's fine, but that's what he is because he has demonstrated no ability to get on the field.
