A new car!!! (1 Viewer)

Hyundai Sonata with the cool parking itself feature FWIW

I have ridden in the 2019 and it was a really, really nice car.
Not ashamed to admit that it was that stupid "smaht pahk" commercial that caught my attention. I was leasing a Hyundai at the time and the lease was expiring, so I test drove and started leasing a '20 Sonata about 2 months ago.  I got the base model, so it doesn't have smart park or the blind spot sensor, but it does have the backup camera and collision warning sensor, and so far I'm getting between 27-29 MPG doing mostly non-highway driving. When I have driven on the highway, I've been pleased with its smooth ride and giddyup when needed. I know I'm talking to FBGs here, but I think it's a good bang for the buck.

I personally think it will get better.  Dealers have a lot of inventory but at least they aren't getting more supply from manufacturers since they are mostly closed.  Once the manufacturers start up again in a couple of weeks they are going to need to move inventory and imagine manufacturers give a ton of dealer support.

This is of course just an educated guess.
Before I bought my slightly used car I looked at all the incentives that manufacturers were offering in terms of cash back, cheap financing, and lease deals. Broadly speaking, the American and Japanese manufacturers were being appropriately aggressive, while the European ones were not.

Anyone buying? I am tempted to trade in my car, which is an awesome car, because of the 0% financing getting tossed around. Ask? Wait? Deal?
I just negotiated a deal for my in-laws, everything over email, took about a week to reach a deal(no pay for 90 days and 63 months at 0%).  They picked it up yesterday and commented how great the experience was, 5 min at the dealer signing papers and walked out with a new Subaru Ascent.  Salesman couldn't show them all the features of the new car which isn't a big deal for most but they're late 60's so the tech can be a little confusing.

I wouldn’t expect deals to get too much better, hard to beat 0% over 5-7  years.  Maybe some additional incentives since the Big 3 (Not sure status on other OEM) will be coming back soon so dealers may want to start getting rid of inventory before they start taking too much new on

I’ve been debating getting a new car but not too keen on taking on a new payment since I’m on at least 3 months of salary reduced by 20% and if things down pick up i think that could get extended

These are the types of stories I was expecting to see......

Subaru Leases Airport To Park 30,000 Unsold Cars

https://www.torquenews.com/1084/subaru-leases-airport-park-30000-unsold-cars

"Subaru just signed a lease agreement with the St. Marys Airport in Camden County, Georgia, paying them $95,000 a month to use the 280-acre site to park 30,000 Subaru vehicles at the vacant airstrip on the east coast. The new vehicles arriving from Japan are being offloaded at the Port of Brunswick and will be trucked to the location and the vehicles will be stored until dealers have room to take them.

The report says Subaru will provide fencing, security lighting, and a temporary construction trailer on the property and provide security to make sure the cars are safe until they can be moved. There are around 190 usable acres and the city will provide mowing and other maintenance-related tasks on the site before the cars arrive. Subaru has agreed to lease the property for three months expecting sales to increase soon."

I am guessing if they are leasing a 280-acre site and investing in fencing and security lighting they don't see a quick end to the drop in demand. I can only assume this extends to most if not all auto makers but in the article they also mention this....

"Subaru isn’t the only automaker trying to figure out where to park unsold cars. The Japan Times reports a Nissan cargo ship carrying around 2,000 Nissan Armada SUVs, Rogue crossovers and Infiniti sedans were sitting in the port for almost a week before it could offload the cars.

A senior vice president for the U.S. unit of Norwegian shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen said, “This is different from anything we’ve seen before. Everyone is full to the brim.

... there will likely be a buying opportunity at some point but I don't know when this will be. It's a bit like timing the market.

Took the plunge on a new VW atlas for my wife.  Process was painless, took a few weeks of negotiating via email.  Finally arrived at my goal price.  Went to pick it up yesterday and the monthly payment was $15/month lower than what we had negotiated too.  Over 72 months no interest financing (and a free 4 months of no loan payments) works out to $1152 extra savings for absolutely no reason.  I signed the paperwork and got the heck out of there.  Never even saw the sales guy I had worked with.

One dealership or multiple?

In the past I have sent emails to multiple  nearby dealerships nearby with the specs I was looking for "I am looking for bids on XX car with ABC options and will go with the best offer. What is the best you can do?"

Because of this thread, I wrote to a couple dealers about a 2020 Ionic Hybrid. I think I'm talking about the same car to each dealer because, as @lumpy19, said above, I think stock is going to be low on these. At least in my area.

I love my current car (05 convertible M3), but itching for something newer.... need to wait a little bit as I am taking a temporary hit in salary.

I think I'm in the market for a new used car.  After getting laid off a while back I just accepted an offer for a sales job for an industrial equipment company and will be starting soon.  It's a small company under new ownership and they prefer paying mileage or having me rent a car for long trips at the beginning.  Car lease or allotment may be an option in the future though.  My current car is a 2005 Toyota Highlander that I didn't pick out and basically got as a handoff when my wife picked up a minivan years ago.

All of my cars to this point have been from Manheim auto auctions and usually 2-3 years old coming off of a lease.  My dad had a dealer license for his business but has since retired so that avenue is now closed to me.  I'd again be interested in buying a used car rather than new to save on the cost of driving it off the lot, aka first fart fee.  My initial thought is to check dealers that offer their own certified preowned coming off lease cars or hit up a Carsense type company.  Also wondering when is the best time to make a deal with everything going on right now.

What I'm looking for in a car is primarily good gas mileage (to make the most of getting paid for mileage) and a good comfortable ride for days when I'm spending alot of time in the seat.  Thinking probably a sedan which would be my first after a lot of SUVs.  Would also like some bells and whistles in the entertainment system for easy hands free calling, decent stereo, etc.  But I'm coming from a 2005 so anything will probably seem futuristic.  Need to start looking around to get an idea of what I might like.

Seems like there hasn't been any activity in this thread for a while so looking for advice and also any updates you guys have seen or had experience with lately.  Thanks in advance!

If they pay for mileage then I’d look at something reliable but maybe 4-5 years old. If you know how much you will drive that mileage expense might pay for the car. I don’t know your finances but since you were just laid off it might be a nice way to get a free car and then upgrade once you are more settled and secure. I’ve only bought new 1 time after 2003 and that was like your dad. I went through a friend who partially owns a leasing company with other family so I got Toyota pricing via his largest commercial client. I went to the same dealer to test drive and got a quote for the same car and trade in. He saved me $8k total since I also sold my car. Gained about $4k on both ends since I didn’t pay destination charges and got discounts on every option as well.

Also, don’t ignore Carmax. My last purchase was an RX 350 F-Sport. The CPO deals were way higher and with Carmax you get great detailed shots so I found the one with the fewest scratches and best seats. The prices didn’t vary much so if you have time you can find the right one and get it shipped. Selling your car yourself shouldn’t be too bad either. I’ve made out better than trade in every time. In a couple cases almost doubled the price. The one I mentioned above I sold for $8k and dealer offered $4k.

Looking at a 2 year old used car w/under 20k miles, clean carfax, etc. for a pretty good deal.  So where can you find the best used car rates?  In my past experience, the dealerships generally offer you 2% above the going rate unless you bring in your own, then they usually cave in and beat my best rate.  I live in Indiana, I had found a place called Consumers Credit Union. I called them and inquired about opening an account and they said "sorry you have be a resident of Michigan."  Their advertised rate was 3.5% but you could get it down to 2.5% w/automatic deduction, opening an account there, yadda, yadda.

Anyone have anything?

I have also traveled out of state to purchase a car

Thank you @proninja
One of the cars I have always wanted was the Subaru WRX STI Hatchback which wasn't around very long and they didn't make a ton of them. '09-'12 somewhere about there and then stopped making them. Thru Autotrader you can search the entire country, if it's a car you want badly enough you'll figure a way to get it.

I have found success by using our credit union, USAA, and working directly with multiple dealers.
So, I wanted to say I'm so glad I posted up on here.  I did a google search for my local credit unions (I used to belong to one 20 years ago) and I found 1.99% for 3-4 or 2.24% for 5+ years so I went with one of the credit unions local to Indy here.

With that in mind, I had found two Honda Pilots, both 2018's. One was an EX-L w/19k for $32k (asking price) and the other was a 2019 Pilot Touring w/16k for $36k asking.  The EX-L was unusually beat up (deep scratches on the rear bumper cover and tailgate, deep punctures/gouges in the dash board, long dog hair (not fur, it was LONG!) everywhere but the Touring was pretty much perfect so I got the 2018 CPO Touring for $33k which I thought was an "okay" deal but extremely happy about financing it through the credit union.

Thanks again for the suggestion Drunken Knight!

We were with a credit union 20 years ago, who offered a free auto brokerage service.  Got an excelent price and great financing.  Did this twice with them and got an even better deal on the second car.  Moved out of state for 10 years, then back to the area and started banking with them again.  Mrs was looking for a new used car in 18, and unfortunately their program was very different and we ended up using USAA.  It was another happy ending.... 2017 X3 for $23k out the door.

Question so I don't have to fire up a new thread, thanks.

-Own a '17 Subaru Forrester 2.0XT Touring, TruCar says $18k-$19k but Autotrader, 500 Mile radius only 13 of them even list from '16-'17 and most are well North of $20k and I only have 36,000 miles on mine, most of these are at 60,000 and higher. But I'll go with Tru Car and let's say I could sell it for $18k, I owe nothing.

The car is only going to depreciate and I thought about flipping it for another Subaru, bought this one a little over $30k, let's say I sell for $18k, my net to drive it for almost 4 years is about $12k which I think is pretty cheap for what you are getting here.

They stopped putting 2.0 Turbos in these models and so I am not eager to flip it for another Forrester.

-It's nice to not have a big car payment right now, however every year this vehicle will depreciate and I think I could still get top dollar in this market, good used car are hard to come by.

I've thought about selling the car and using the equity for investments or down payment on an investment property. I have another car, Mrs and I are working a lot out of the house and could even share a vehicle if we had to for quite a while. Any thoughts any of you have, would be interested in reading. Maybe some of you do something similar every 2-3 years.

Multiple dealers, biggest issue was lack of stock and no idea when more cars were coming.
Same experience in my area. There is a lack of stock at most dealerships. Lots of free money given to people and it seems cars are the current flavor to spend it on. And boats and pools.

MOP.  I won’t address the last paragraph as that more of a personal choice. As far as the car itself and depreciation, Sub’s hold there value very well and you’ve already taken the big depreciation hit.  Depending on how many miles you plan to put on it (and it doesn’t seem like much based on what you have and your situation) it will move very slowly down from where it is now over the next few years.

Accord.  Drive it forever, holds value, etc.  New ones look pretty slick IMO.
Hey car guys, was looking at cars and think I narrowed it down to a 2018 Honda Accord Touring but hoping to get some feedback on what you guys think of them and these in particular. The first one's also a hybrid which I'm leaning towards but feel like I need to do a little more research on how well they hold up:

2018 Accord Touring HYBRID 2.0T  - $27,000 - Mileage: 20,152

https://www.jonesjunction.com/used/Honda/2018-Honda-Accord+Hybrid-d659fcee0a0e0adf76b9551f52a54091.htm

2018 Accord Touring 1.5T  - $26,477 - Mileage: 12,683

https://www.conicelliautoplex.com/certified/Honda/2018-Honda-Accord-09a35e7f0a0e0ae8210cc93605ef924f.htm

2018 Accord Touring 1.5T  - $25,595 - Mileage: 19,155

https://express.viphonda.com/express/used/1HGCV1F94JA119127?deal_type=cash

What do you think of these?  How do they look on quality / options / price vs other options?  Any other suggestions?

I really need to dump this 2005 Highlander we originally got for my wife but I've been driving for 10 years.

1.5 Turbos have had issues with oil dilution. I would prefer a naturally aspirated engine for long term reliability. I wouldn’t touch a hybrid either so I’d take the other two before the hybrid. If you don’t plan on keeping them for 200,000 miles i would say just get whichever  drives best for you.

Still got my 2006 honda Accord for work.  But it's mostly parked as I've been teleworking.  Still, it has 250k miles and besides the paint peeling and leather cracking it's still running strong.

On the other hand, our 2011 durango with 170k is showing some reliability issues.  My wife typically drives it and she likes the feel of it, but with our three kids space is becoming an issue on road trips.  Added a cargo carrier and hitch trailer, but kids are starting to complain about leg room.

She doesn't want to drive a suburban/etc, but afraid that may be the only choice in 1-2 years.

Planned on checking out the three cars above on Saturday.  The hybrid was the furthest from me, a couple hours away in MD so hit that one first because I wanted to test drive one before making any decisions and they've been real hard to find around here.  I ended up really liking the car during he test drive.  No discernable drawbacks (driving-wise) to it being a hybrid and I thought it drove a little better than the 1.5L.  Everything kind of fell into place after that.  They met my asking price for my trade in, discounted the price of the car to my asking price (after a few "going back to get manager approvals"), came up with a reasonable financing rate, and let me put down the initial money with my credit card so I could get points on it.

It took about 4-5 hours but wasn't nearly as painful as I expected.  Took about 2-3 hours to drive home so I got to play around with the car for a while and I'm very happy with it especially considering all the improvements from my previous 2005 that I've been driving since around 2007.  The hybrid is kind of an expensive experiment for me but I heard predominantly positive reviews in my research.  Also being an engineer, the way the batteries and motors work together and are visually represented on the dash screen is pretty cool.  Less important, the wife and kids like it too.  Wife may want a new car now but that's a problem for a different day.

Congrats GB!  I have a 2019 Accord Hybrid

Also a Ford guy. Also bought a Fusion (Hybrid) in 2013. It has been flawless despite a few call backs. I gave it to my kid to take to college, and bought a 2017 Raptor, that I love, but it is impractical. I want a minivan. I looked at the 2020 Fusion Hybrid for a long time yesterday. I don't care that they are discontinuing it. It is so nice for the price (27k and they will come down). But I suggest you get the most car for the money, which is a modern mini-van. I mentioned it in another car thread and was surprised how many FBGs agreed with me. I'm down to a Pacifica HYbrid or the Sienna AWD. Just haven't been able to pull the trigger for several months.
Did you ever purchase?

Not a minivan. I got another Fusion, but updates here

edit - I still want a minivan, but an electric one. Mercedes has one available in Europe, pff. The ones coming to market here have awful range. Considering the spaciousness of a van, they should be packing them with big batteries and having the best range - some day, I s'pose.

I got the Pacifica hybrid and love it so far. I can go 35 miles every day before I use any gas and gets 30 mpg the rest of the time. I love it so far, except the shifter is a big dial located just below the volime knob. I know I'm going to twist it into Park someday when trying to turn down a commercial. I hope it has some kind of safeguard where I don't destroy the transmission or die.

it's a great choice and i'm a little jealous. Awhile back Russell Westbrook's dealership had screaming deals (37,9) on two Pacifica Hybrid Red Ss. The ridiculous red interiors attracted me (but I'm weird and they probably caused the discounts). I was too cheap and got the Fusion. I almost turned it into a Mach E recently, but again couldn't pull the trigger. I am truly all in on all electric going fwd, which looks like it will keep me vanless.

As long as you dont go more than 35 miles between charges, it is all electric. And if you're on a long road trip, do you really want to stop and charge every 200-300 miles for a couple hours  before the next leg?

Yup yup. My Fusion is a plug-in, goes up to 40 miles on e-only around town. I've bought gas for four trips this year. Six fill-ups in 6 months, and it's 3/4s full atm. That's why I am 100% ev going fwd. Ranges getting better. Charging time getting shorter. 20-30 minutes does the job. What's the hurry? Gas is gross.

Also thanks for bumping this. It got me looking. Seems there's shortage of used Raptors on the market. Mine has very low mileage. Prices for similar on AutoTrader are more than what I paid. My ad starts Thursday. I'll be happy to say good riddance at 60k. That puts me in or close to some very nice EVs. 400 mile+ Lucid Air Pure getting a hands on look soon. Fed and CA tax incentives nearly make it a break even. It also comes with 3 yrs of complimentary charging.
