A player you feel "sorry" for. . . (1 Viewer)

He was the starting QB on a team with a crap coach whose pass protection almost got him killed. A new coach came in and signed a retread veteran QB to take his starting spot, then traded a high draft pick to draft a rookie QB to push him further out of the team's future. And that coach refused to trade him, kept him on the team although he had no future there.

I guess someone has to say Greg Cook.

Great athlete, with limitless potential, coming off an amazing record setting rookie season with Cincy injures his shoulder and he's done. I've never heard of anyone that watched him play that didn't think he was on his way to being one of the greatest QBs ever.

I hope we aren't saying basically the same thing about Palmer in 10 years.
His injury gave birth to the "west" coast offense. Its a damn shame what happened to his career, but he has a place in NFL history.

Jerome Bettis would have been the obvious choice here had Harper returned that fumble for a TD. I think everyone outside of Indy breathed a big sigh of relief for The Bus when Vandy missed that FG. I know I did (I breathed one for the Broncos too--nothing against Pitt, but Peyton has had their number in the RCA Dome lately and Denver's unbeaten at home this season). For the short term I feel sorry for Carson Palmer. He had a great start to his first playoff game ever only to have his knee shredded. It sounds like he'll be set for next season, but that had to suck. I just hope he makes a full recovery because I was looking forward to watching him play for years to come.I feel sorry for Brett Favre because he made the mistake of playing this season and, in a lot of ways, he has tarnished whatever legacy he may have had. The end of the Cincy game, when he threw that under had pass after he was a good five yards past the line of scrimmage and then proceeded to crawl around in an overly dramatic was an all time low, I think. To be blunt, it was pathetic, and I felt sincere pity for him in that moment.

My choice as well. This guy deserves better than what Gibbs has given him.

Shuan Alexander: because until this year the guy never got any respect. Some still call him soft. All you ever hear is LT this and LT that.Last 5 years of production Alex. 98 total TDs. LT 80 total TDS. Alex.7504 rush yards. Lt 7361.Why would Seattle not give this guy everything he deserves.

Charlie Frye because he's being looked at as the savior of the Browns organization. I'm sure he feels it's a great opportunity, but we all know how it will end up.It's kind of like finding out you had a rich, long-lost uncle you never knew about who died and left you a huge plot of land in California. You get all excited and fly out there, only to find out that the land is an ancient Indian burial ground adjacent to a maximum security prison and a Port-A-John dumping station.

TOI feel sorry for him that his "social un-graces" keep him from getting what he wants. TO simply doesnt get it mentally. He sure gets it on the field and in my opinion, that is all it should be about.Philadelphia EaglesI feel sorry for my birds. We hired one of the best WRs in the game. He was argueably one of the best WRs we have ever had. In his first year he broke all time Eagle WR records. Due to the fact TO was working under a far from ideal contract, Phi and TO were unable to come to an agreement on money. Money (and TO's inability to leave business in the negotiating room) led to a huge blowup and them having to part ways. It is unfortunate that this wedding didnt last simply due to money.

Archie Manning who though I'm too young to have seen play must've been a great quarterback to be so highly regarded when he had nothing but awful Saints teams to play on.Ki-Jana Carter, a career backup after that knee injury. Never saw what he could do and became synonymous with bad draft choice.Dalton Hilliard - career cut way too short - he led me to the playoffs in my first fantasy season.Ickey Woods - an NFL legend :) and another whose career was cut way too short - later ended up selling meat door-to-door(!). Glad he's back in the Cincy community and doing good works with his foundation.Tim Krumrie - for an awful break at the worst possible time.Trey Junkin who should've had a great anonymous long-snapping career stay that way but for being brought in for one very unfortunate snap (though I can't stand the Giants, him I feel bad for)Sweetness for not getting the touchdown he deserved.Ryan Leaf, for just never ever getting it.Anybody QB whose roster spot was taken by Leaf.-QG

I thought that was illegal in most states

Kurt WarnerYes, maybe he got more than he deserved with his three years of fame. Maybe it was the system that made him. But Jesus, the guy worked some miracles in those years. People seem to hate him now, think he was a fraud, they dislike his wife.....but he always seemed like a good guy and had a great story. Maybe it's just my Iowa roots talking.

Agreed. Warner gets a bad rap for almost no reason at all. My choice would be Correll Buckhalter.

Deshaun FosterSince his legendary high school career, he has fought nagging injuries at UCLA and the pros. The guy just cant stay healthy, suffering a variety of freak injuries (has any other player lost as much time from broken bones?). This year everything seemed different. With Stephen Davis out for the year and Carolina advancing deep into the playoffs, this was his big chance. Yet he got injured once again and will now miss what was meant to be the most important game of his career - starting RB in the NFC Championship.Poor guy. Plus its a contract year. :(

TO

Fixed.

Who do I feel sorry for? Doug Flutie. Seriously, nobody has gotten a rawer deal. Everywhere he's gone, he's been a winner. He's done nothing but come in and provide a massive spark to a struggling franchise... and every time, he's been rewarded with a spot on the bench because he's "too short" or "not a prototypical passer". Who cares? Joey Harrington is a prototypical passer, and his team overlooks failure after failure because of it, while Flutie gets shown the door after success after success. I firmly believe that if some coach had said to Flutie in his first or second year "You know what? You aren't the prototypical passer... and that's fine with me. We're going to give you a shot. We're going to make you 'our guy' and stand by you and let you carry this franchise", I firmly believe that Flutie would have a very storied career, and would possibly even be getting serious hall-of-fame consideration now. Instead, he's going to forever be known for nothing more than the Boston College hail-mary and the dropkick to end his career.
I have had this same conversation with friends over the years. Flutie has been shafted and many times put into the game in "an impossible situation" only to pull off a win. Great QB that never got the credit or the chance in the NFL.
Ken Hamlin.........without a doubt.

The guy gets his head kicked in and beat up on with a traffic sign and now may never play football again.
Man, deja vu. That sounds just like the beginning of the movie Shaft.
Pat Tillman RIP!
True.My # 1 Pick has to be Flutie though. Aside from what was discussed above, his son has autism, and he had to play under Schottenheimer which definitely pushed him to the top of my list.

thats not going to fly here guy

Deuce McAllister. He came to New Orleans with a head of steam determined to turn around his hometown franchise. Several injuries and years of bad management later, he'll be lucky to see a winning season.

Kurt Warner - After all the excitement he generated for the NFL he seems to be passed around like a hot potato!

honorable mention: Mike Martz - no respect for the excitement he brought to NFL...now the league can go back to the No Fun League!

I feel sorry for two former player who clearly and with out doubt belong in the Hall of Fame but for some unknown reason can't get elected.the best G of the 80s Russ Grimm may have been the best Olineman of the 80s. and Art Monk who was NFL most prolific WR in NFL history at the time of his retirement. By the way None of the Redskin Hogs are in the Hall.the Stupidest thing is that last year Irvin got more vote toward election then he did and Irvin wasn't half the player he was this a player that shouldn't even be considered for the Hall of Fame. He wasn't a Hall of Fame Player nor does he have Hall of fame Stats. Only reason he is considered is because he played for the Cowboys.

My first thought was that offensive lineman from the Browns (I think, or maybe his name was Brown), that got hit in the eye with the penalty flag and ruined his career I think.

Or the player that Romo punched in the face and ended his career, with fairly cheap settlement if I remember.

But in all honesty, I can't really feel bad for any of these guys. They get paid more $$ than I'll ever see to play a game. Tough luck hits everybody. It's like asking which actor with a drug addiction I feel bad for.

Sorry for the serious response. Just the idea that I should feel sorry for Kurt Warner was a bit much.

Refresh my memory. Was he the Manning that had good stats but never won anything? Or am I thinking of a different one?

Orlando Brown, but he later returned in plays for the Ravens.

If the Steelers lose in Denver this weekend, I'm going to feel terrible for Jerome Bettis. He deserves to play in the Super Bowl.

Nick Goings for Carolina.

The kid was a big-time high school football player in Central Ohio, but he never got much of a shot at Ohio St. transferred to Pitt and was not a star there and was undrafted. He has done everything the Panthers have asked of him (special teams, FB, etc.) and even had 5 100 yard games last year. After all of that he came back as a fourth teamer in camp. I have never heard him complain or beg for the ball and a shot. He is the epitome of a role player, and it would be cool to see him have a huge game this weekend.
Perfectly said.
I'll be cheering him on but I don't feel sorry for him. He's got that underdog thing going.

Jim Kelly and the whole crew from those 90's Bills teams. I wish that they could have gotten at least 1 SB out of the deal. I loved those teams. It is too bad they were never able to pull it together.

Dewayne Carswell....Sitting at a redlight and WHAM! Now he's gonna miss out on playing in a Superbowl!
Yep, he's going to miss out on playing in a Super Bowl.Of course, so will Jake Plummer, Rod Smith, and the rest of the Broncos.

:D

Drum Roll .... :excited: I really think that the Den/Pit game will be a toss up. I am giving the slight edge to the Broncos b/c their Cheerleaders have those cute orange cowgirl outfits! :pics:

Going trivial - death / disability is too heavy for a Friday.Danny WhiteGood player, just a few plays away from having an incredible legacy (e.g. the Catch). Instead, is better known for competing with Gary Hogeboom.

Not in USDA Choice states.

Danny White

Good player, just a few plays away from having an incredible legacy (e.g. the Catch). Instead, is better known for competing with Gary Hogeboom.
I thought he was known for leaving a lot of games for injuries that didn't seem serious, making way for good old Gary. It was kind of before my time, but that's what my parents (big Cowboys fans at the time) always complained about.

If I remember right, towards the end of his career, he had some sort of injury that affected him so that he couldn't really feel when he was gripping the ball. So he might drop back to pass, #### his arm, the ball would come out and he wouldn't even know it. Or maybe this was Dave Krieg?Anyway, I echo what others here have said aboug David Carr. I honestly don't think we know a thing about how good a QB he is yet. Buckhalter (I'm a Husker by birth) is another guy who hasn't caught a lot of *good* breaks. . .

Oh for CRYING OUT LOUD. I wasn't ####### cursing!!!! Let's try to get this around the language filter. . ."So he might drop back to pass, MALE CHICKEN (USED IN FIGHTS ON WHICH PEOPLE WAGER) his arm, the ball would come out and he wouldn't even know it."

Geez louise. . .

Be excellent.

Wow, 2 pages & no one mentions Buerlien. Gets no love for the Raiders, fills in pretty darn good for Aikman, plays with crap teams in Arizona, gets put on the expansion draft list & gets picked by the Jaguars, then goes to Carolina & has to play behind Kerry Collins. Takes over for Collins when he QUITS, throws for 4400+ & 3700+ yards in 2 full seasons for the Panthers, who at the time had a MUCH WORSE O-line than David Carr has...Then Siefert fires him for Jeff Lewis :hot:

Brandon Lloyd
Why do you feel bad for him? Is it because he can't catch the ball unless its with one hand?
Because he's an excellent young talent at WR, who I don't think will ever get a chance to fully develope. The 49er's spent a #1 on Alex Smith and with that type of investment, they'll stick with far longer than they should. Smith will never become a legit NFL QB.Lloyd will just waste away in Frisco, as long as Smith is the QB.
