AD officially reaches the second round (1 Viewer)

Minnesota Vikings rookie RB Adrian Peterson proved that he is a legitimate star player at this level.
After watching Brian Griese's many stellar career preseason performances, I can only conclude that his name will one day be mentioned among the likes of Marino, Favre, Elway, and Montana. Also, Quentin Griffin's performances against Indy and KC have signaled his arrival as the second coming of Barry Sanders.Long story short, Peterson might have looked nice, but he hasn't PROVEN anything yet.
While I agree that rookies have to prove themselves...I think comparing an exceptional talent like Peterson to players like Griese and Griffin is a poor comparison. Peterson is a real talent and I think most consider him a future stud. Griese and Griffin were never highly regarded, and even after a great game or two, I don't think people considered them to be studs in the making. I personally didn't need last night to tell me Peterson will be a star in this league someday. He is one of those once in 10 year RB talents in my opinion. It's a matter of when, not if.

Benson is injury prone as well and seems to be missing something otherwise.
This is an ironic comment.
I am considering Benson and AP separately, one being injury prone has no impact on the other being.
You're justifying picking AP over Benson, due to injury proneness, are you not???
You didn't bold the entire portion of the statement that was relevant. He said "Benson is injury prone as well." So the way I read his statement is that the injury bug is not a factor in his decision-making.

Are people really drafting Peterson in the 2nd? Why would you draft him in the 2nd when you can get him in the 4th?
He may have went in the 4th last month, but I can guarantee he doesn't make it past the mid 3rd at the latest now.
Interesting...I was looking at him for 4.04 but now maybe I'll have to get off the fence one way or the other. Is he going ahead of guys like T. Jones, Cadillac, and Jacobs?

Why am I so worried about injury with this guy? I usually don't do that. Could be that dive into the endzone or whatever, I don't know, but it causes concern. Am I nuts?

I sure hope he is.

all I know is, i LOVE early dynasty drafts. Took Bush 1.3, AP 2.9, and Calvin 3.3. This trio is gonna bring me lots of good fortune over the next several years.

I just looked at antsports.com. The highest he has gone in any single draft is 4.03. Are you speculating that after last night he'll go in the 3rd or earlier in all drafts?

The player he most looks like is Clinton Portis 2002. Portis came in as an injured RB with an established 1000 yard rusher ahead of him. Didn't start until game 4, but by then it was evident that Portis was so much more talented than Anderson that he had to get the majority of carries. Then I looked at the year Portis had. If AP is 75% of 2002 Portis he's value in the 2nd. Big IF though. I don't think he justifies the risk in the 2nd round (not injury risk, the total lack of respect the Vikings passing game gets so much tougher defense). Schedule is pretty nice with only Chicago and San Diego excellent run defenses from 2006.

I am still surprised that he's lasting until the 4th in leagues. IMO he'd be the perfect upside pick to pair with LT at the 3.1 pick, but evidently that's just me. In most leagues aren't you getting to RBs 15-20 drafted by the end of the 2nd round? I'd easily take him over the other RBs in that range.

The more I read, the more I'm starting to agree with this. Taylor still worries me though as he will definitely get some of the touches. The one comparison that I haven't seen yet is between AP and Lynch. Prior to reading this thread my plan would be to pick Lynch if both are there as I think he will not have as much competition for carries. Does the talent of AP outweigh the risk of less carries in this case?

He's the 25th RB off the board on antsports. I like him a lot and I'd love to have him but it will have to be with the 4.04 pick for me if I do it.

I am shying away from AP this year and taking backs like Benson and McGahee because

A) Tavarius Jackson + Bobby Wade = 8 or 9 in the box

B) Are the Vikings going to have leads to protect?

C) There are no other guys in those situations that are going to take hardly any carries. Even if AP gets a 75/25 split it still means 50-60 less carries than the aforementioned.

Dynasty you have to consider him #1, but in a redraft, I like Benson and McGahee's situations better. Definitely not saying they are better RB's, just the situations dictate to me having to take them ahead of AP this year.

My 12 team league is a 3 player keeper, so my 1st overall pick will be the 37th player taken.

17 of the 36 keepers are RBs, and with my three keepers of Larry Johnson, Donovan McNabb and Marvin Harrison, absoLUTEly I am gonna nab this guy as my #2 RB and 18th RB overall.
Funny, I am facing a similiar situation in my 12 Team 3 Keeper league. I also have the 1.01 pick.I asked the FBG Assistant Coach Community for help in justifying Min RB A Peterson over the proven talent of NYJ RB T Jones, Arz WR L Fitz, Cin WR TJ Housh, NE QB T Brady or Cin QB C Palmer!

Asst Coach Post

The more I see him play, the easier it gets to take him 1.01

Bush went 1.01 last year and is a keeper this season.

A Peterson will be my keeper for the next 4 years (as long as the rules allow)!

He looks like a good value at this slot. Glad I did not trade away the pick!

No problem. That's what I'm here for.

I think that's exactly what people are doing.

I would take him in the 4th as my RB #3, but no higher. The ONLY way I take him as a RB #2 is to handcuff with Taylor and he is going to early for my liking. Right now I would rather take Benson with a beast of an OL, and an all world Def., playing in the NFC North. I also think Benson has a cheap handcuff that could still put up RB#2 #'s in that offense.

Yeah but, the run JUST happened last night. Next week his ADP will probably average 4th round and he will be going in the 3rd in many drafts.

So where do you see Chester Taylor after last night? Relegated to 3rd down? Spelling AD? Goalline?
I think anyone who expected Chester to outproduce Peterson was sorely misguided. My guess is that he'll be the change-of-pace back, getting some third down work and some carries when Peterson is gassed.

Wow, so it sounds like people would draft AP over guys like MJD and Benson. I understand the talent, however Benson and MJD have shown that they can produce in the NFL, AP has shown he can play for parts of a season in college. I would love to be convinced to go with AP's talent and swing for the fences, put a young, NFL tested back appeals to me more.

meh. take away the big run and his ypc is 3.85. big deal. late 5th round is the earliest i would consider him.
so, you're saying, just take it away?? kinda like it didnt occur? hmmm...i think you should start a thread about "RB'S WHO RIP-OFF HUGE RUNS AND WHETHER OR NOT THEY SHOULD BE A FACTOR"

nevermind, you're right. big deal.

I suppose if you took away all of Barry Sander's big runs he wouldn't have made a pro bowl much less the HOF.HTHHe may never be Barry, but he's certainly not Ki Jana Carter either.

I think Peterson is right there with those three in that RB 18-22'ish area. I have him at #20 so I can't see him lasting until the 40th pick (4.04) I think he'll be going closer to the mid 3rd this coming week. Add to that someone in your league over-valuing a little and he could very easily go early 3rd.

The only thing limiting his upside is this notion that the Vikings will be a RBBC 50%
Yeah that pesky notion. I'm sure that they are going to just fling Chester Taylor to the bench. Having 2 backs like this in the NFL is a GREAT thing for teams. The prefer not to run a guy into the ground. I'm sure Chested loves the fact that he won't be getting 34 carries a game again. Sucks for their fantasy perspectives.cliff notes: Chester Taylor is NOT getting benched without an injury.

And owning both MJD and Taylor or Bush and McCallister would've sucked last year.

No, but for the most part we like to avoid RBBC's. Taking a guy in an RBBC in the 2nd is silly.
Every year there are guys that are way overhyped, and AP is one of them this yr. While his talent level isn't questioned, the fact that he will be in an RBBC for a team that will struggle to move the ball and probably wont win 5 games is a very bad sign. He'll be going WAY too early for me to even think about him in my redraft.

I love hype trains...more value slides to me as a result of these threads.
Hucks - where do you have him ranked? And when is your running back article coming, since I always think your articles are among the most thought provoking threads on this board.

 Benson? He's shown nothing yet beyond an ability to get under teammates' skins, an overinflated sense of his own value, a penchant for sticking his foot in his mouth, the inability to beat out a veteran RB, a proclivity for leg injuries, and the ability to rush for 600 yards.

Of course Peterson hasn't shown he can produce in the NFL. He is, by definition, a rookie. In this field, it's customary for us to guess at a rookie's production based on their talent, skill set, college production, team environment, and expected role.

In my opinion, there are a couple of things to look for in the next Viking preseason games. First, we need to see how Jackson looks throwing the ball deep. Jackson didn't take any shots deep in his limited opportunity last night, and that will be a big indication of whether he can keep Peterson from facing 8 man fronts. Bollinger tried a few deep balls, and failed miserably. If Jackson looks better in this area, big plus for Peterson.
Reports out of camp say Jackson is struggling with the deep ball.

I also subtracted all of those flukey big plays from Jerry Rice's career too. Conclusion: he actually wasn't very good.Edited to add: 5th is probably pushing it, but I don't get all of the talk of Peterson in the 2nd round. That's not where you have to take him (at least not yet). If people are going to jump the gun on AP, I'll take whomever that bumps down to me.

I have been doing some writing for FBG and I've been slammed at work, including some extensive travel...it's been a rough couple of months...as a matter of fact I'm working on something at this moment that was due to Dodds last week. :thumbup:I have two big auction drafts this Sunday that I'm preparing for, after those I'll probably have time to get the RB portion out of the way.In summary I haven't had time to put these together and I am targeting this week to put them out. They'll definitely be out within the next two weeks. I make it an objective to write these as I analyze them at the end of each year for the purpose of trying to find flaws in my methodology.

I don't know about that I just watched the Chicago/Houston on NFL channel again and they were using Benson ALOT! He even caught 2-3 passes and out of the backfield on designed plays and seemed to run pretty hard. I'm not saying that he is more talented than Peterson, but his situation is better. We all know that ff success is a combination of talent and situation. Benson has a dang good situation.
