Adam Vinatieri (1 Viewer)

Pat Patriot

Footballguy
In the latter stages of his career:

1. left a situation where he was treated like a God and paid very, very well

2. hoodwinked another team into giving them a long term contract above market value

3. gave that team 1 good year

4. after year 1, was stealing money the rest of the contract with declining performance

Vinatieri 2007

FG 16-20 with a long of 39 with 2 missed XP's to boot. Sounds like the party is about over for Vinatieri. I wonder if the Colts have Vanderjagt on speed dial.

Weren't we lectured every year by Pats fans about how Vinatieri's strength was making critical kicks in the playoffs? I think we're a tad early with this sort of comment, don't you?

Not by me. I have been consistent on Vinatieri. He is the most overrated kicker in the history of the NFL. He made 1 great kick, the Snow Bowl kick against Oakland. Both Super Bowl kicks were in Domes in a tie game at moderate distances. Not the big clutch kicks everyone credits him with. Not many remember that Vinatieri missed 2 kicks earlier in the Carolina Super Bowl.BTW. Never liked Damon in Boston either. I am very consistent in my stance on both guys.

Kickers are are a different breed. Vandy went from being the 1 all time to out of the league in one year.

I would like to see another kicker on the roster. There is no reason for all the close extra points i see every week. He seems to be below avg at this point. A kicker is a kicker. I dont like the one we got

That is why kickers should be on 1 year contracts. They lose it too quick. Thats why the Patriots were willing to Franchise Vinatieri every year (I know the rules dont allow this). They would pay him top dollar, highest paid kicker in the league, but only 1 year at a time. You have to be nuts to give a kicker a long term contract.

Great post Pat. I get in arguments frequently about how overrated he is and all I hear back is "He is soooooooo clutch." Well, what the hell about the Panthers game.

Vinatieri won a championship after he left Boston, Damon didn't.
exactly, and am i sure the colts feel vinatieri was worth every penny reguardless if he kicks another field goal for them again. winning the superbowl with peyton as qb was all that matterered , now if they win another it is just icing on the cake. dont think anyone cares how much money was spent on a player if it results in a superbowl championship, its when they dont win the superbowl then people feel it was a waste of money. example now, is jevon kearse of the eagles. everyone was happy when he signed , now in philly everyone is saying what a waste of money.

How exactly did signing Vinatieri win them the Super Bowl? Didnt Vinatieri miss a chippy in the SB as well?I love when people say that Brady only has 3 championships because of Vinatieri. Like just because the final margin was 3 points in each SB that Vinatieri was the difference.

I like to think that Football players win games not kickers. IMO your kicker can lose a game for you but can very rarely win a game for you.

read my quote, i never said he was the sole reason they won the superbowl , he was a player that helped the colts get over the hump. do you really think the colts fans will be devasted if they dont win it this year? they won it last year, the peyton "cant win the big game" is gone forever, just like when the redsox beat the yankees, and then won the world series. because the colts beat the patriots , patriots fans are still pissed, because they enjoyed peyton coming up short every year, its just burns people like you that he beat your beloved patriots in of all things the afc championship game, with the patriots choking in the second half of that game when it should have been over. its funny when vinatieri was on the patriots all patriots fans thought he was the best, now that he is on the colts , you are saying he was never really that good. and by the way, the colts thought a kicker could win a game, and they paid for a kicker that they thought was the best. too me it sure worked out fine for them.

Adam is absolutely the reason the Pats won by 3 in 03 & 04. If it weren't for him, they would have won by more. :lmao: (Exiting before this thread gets ugly .......)

I'd give Vinatieri a pass. Even with a bad game, he is light years better than the head case Vanderjerk had become.

Crappy weather conditions in the Charger game; granted that short one should have been automatic. Looks like he over corrected for the wide left earlier in the game.

Didn't Adam have an off-year for the Pats when later he disclosed he had an injury of some kind (back?)

As for the his value? Looked to me he has become shorter on kick-offs the past few years.

Most MIGHT be the appropriate word there but ALL certainly isnt. This Pats fan never overestimated the contribution of the kicker in the winning of the Patriots 3 championships.Manning had a historic game afc championship game and I gave him full credit for doing so. He was great. Vinatieri didnt contribute much to that victory. What does burn my ### is the #####ing and moaning by Vinatieri prior to and immediately after signing with Indy about how Indy made him feel wanted and how poorly he was treated by the Pats. The Pats paid him as a top 3 kicker for 3 years in a row and most (not I but most) Patriots fans absolutely worshiped the guy. It was very disengenuous.

i will agree vinatieri best years might be a thing of the past, but the colts won the superbowl with him and because of that, i dont think they regret signing him. and believe it or not he was a big factor in the colts beating the ravens in the playoffs last year. unfortuneatly for patriots fans, the colts erased the choker tag courtesy of the patriots.

fair enough, cant say much about that. i do believe the patriots losing to the colts, is driving the patriots to 19-0, brady breaking mannings td records and being the greatest team ever. not sure it will happen , but i believe they have a better shot than not. if the patriots pull it off , you can thank peyton, becuase if the patriots had beaten the colts last year, the fire and drive would not have been the same for the patriots to go undefeated like it is today.

I think the fire and drive has been a constant. Throw in players like Thomas, Moss, Welker, etc. Add in a little luck with injuries and... presto.

Well then there is a parallel with Damon. I was disgusted with Damon's statement he was guaranteed to win in NY (I hope they trade him) and he went somewhere he was "really needed". OK... Johnny.

I don't think the analogy with Johnny Damon is a good one. The first year with the Yanks was above expectations and yes (as you say) the 2nd year was below par. But after a horrible start and an expected OPS of .814 after the All Star break he finished a little below his career OPS of .786. He also stole 27 bases getting caught only 3 times. "Hoodwinked" and "stealing" are hyperbole. As for Venitieri, he did make some clutch kicks that win or possibly not and if he would have missed them titles could have been lost. Those are clutch kicks. However, kickers are streaky and after the Carolina misses he has not been good. I guess kickers need psychologists?

Obviously, losing last year's AFC Championship Game to the Colts is a big deal, but I don't think the Patriots or their fans dwell on it nearly as much as you seem to think they do. As far as we're concerned, in the Tom Brady/Peyton Manning era, it's still Patriots 3, Colts 1. Super Bowls are all that matter. The way every fan I know sees it, the Pats were one Reche Caldwell dropped pass away from probably winning another Super Bowl. That's not to make excuses; The Colts deserved to win that game. But that was last year, and this is this year. Brady doesn't have a bunch of 3rd rate receivers to deal with anymore; he has maybe the best set of receivers in the league. The offense is improved, the defense is improved, and the fire and focus is there every bit as much as it has been in the past.I'm sure not winning it last year is motivating the team to get back to the top of the mountain this year to some degree, but if there is one thing that is really motivating the team this year, it's the the crap they took for the camera.

The biggest concern I'd have if I was a Colts fan is his leg strength (or lack thereof). His kickoffs weren't very good in New England, and his leg wasn't going to get stronger with age. His kickoffs now are terrible. Marshall Faulk went so far as to say that Vinatieri was "killing" the Colts' special teams. It's hard to disgaree at this point.

Boston fans have easily overtaken all others as the worst, most annoying, most pompous, self centered fans in the universe.

Nice blanket statement. How so? I started this thread because I am not a big fan of guys who are treated like Kings in one place and then trash that place when they leave. So, I am not a fan of AV or Damon. Not because they took the money but because they would go to the point of saying they were disrespected by the Patriots and Red Sox. Willie McGinest took the money to go to Cleveland. Damien Woody took the money to go to Detroit. No problem with either of those 2 guys. I still root for them. How you leave is important.Boston fans are not going to apologize for talking about and talking up our teams when Pro Sports Teams from Boston are 24-0 since October 18th. Red Sox won their last 7 and the WS title. Patriots have won their first 9 and the Celtics have won their first 8. Good times in Boston.

The Colts would have won the game against the Ravens if Peyton Manning would have been kicking. I'm pretty sure that Manning or someone else on that team could have kicked the 23 yard and 35 yard FG. If you think Vinatieri was the star of that game maybe you should watch some more football and learn something.

Obviously, what we have here is a bitter Pats fan who still hasn't gotten over the fact that Vinitiari and the Colts GOT OVER on the Pats last year.

Vinitiari: 4 rings

Damon: 1 ring

who cares what he is, really..he's one of the best kickers of all time, I don't care if you call him Monty Python, he's a great kicker either way.

don't forget the 40+ yarder he made v. the Titans in the brutal cold where the ball was deader than a doornail

More great analysis here. Yes, lots of Pats fans are very bitter. Afterall, our team is currently undefeated and has won 3 of the last 6 championships. You're right on target though with this Pats fans are bitter schtick.

The CBS announcers, BEFORE his first miss today, said that Vinatieri has a sore plant leg which is causing his recent problems. I live in Indianapolis and this is the FIRST I've heard of this. If it's true, I wish the Colts radio guys would explain it, otherwise the crowd will boo Adam unfairly all day...

How convenient that you left out that Vinatieri also hit FGs from 51, 48, and 42 yards in that win over the Ravens. I am not saying he was the star of that game, but he was instrumental in that win. So to say that the Colts would have won that game had anyone else been kicking their FGs is asinine.

And yet you root for Randy Moss, who got out of Oakland by half-assing it on the field and basically stealing their money. But oh wait, he plays for Boston team now, so that is okay, right? Face it, there is not much loyalty left in sports. Most players will go where the money is, especially if they have already won a title. Once they get the title, they want the big payday. You cannot fault Damon or Vinatieri for leaving.

But it goes both ways. Nothing says we have to care about them anymore after they leave.

I agree, but crying about how terrible they are for leaving for another team and all but calling them turncoats is just silly. Players leave teams all of the time for more money. To get ticked when it happens with a player you liked on your favorite team is showing pure ignorance.

But it goes both ways. Nothing says we have to care about them anymore after they leave.

To me, you can leave for another team, for the money, whatever you want. I get irked when the departing athlete decides to "get in tight" with the new fans by trashing the city/team/fans that had supported him until he left.

I'm sure Patriot fans or more sensitive about comments than I am, but living in Indianapolis I've never heard Adam V say anthing but good things about the New England fans. As far as the organization the only comment I hear was that the Colts organization expressed more interest than the Patriots organization. Which apparently was true. As said above you don't have to care about them after they leave. I see the same thing from some Indy fans taking joy in the misfortune of Jason David or Vanderjacht.

His plant leg is hurting (lol, almost said pant leg) which is effecting the way he kicks. I think it's true because I've never seen him kick this inaccurate before in my life. A guy that good you should give the benefit of the doubt to.

Very convenient. Did they say when he incurred this mysterious injury?

 No kidding. As I have said, I have no problem with Willie McGinnest, Damian Woody, David Givens or other Patriots that have left for teams that would pay them more money. Its not about that. Players will leave for more money (at least most will). There are exceptions. There was a lot said by Vinatieri when he left that was not very complimentary to the Pats fans or organization. I happen to think he went out like a punk.

The Colts would have won the game against the Ravens if Peyton Manning would have been kicking. I'm pretty sure that Manning or someone else on that team could have kicked the 23 yard and 35 yard FG. If you think Vinatieri was the star of that game maybe you should watch some more football and learn something.

How convenient that you left out that Vinatieri also hit FGs from 51, 48, and 42 yards in that win over the Ravens. I am not saying he was the star of that game, but he was instrumental in that win. So to say that the Colts would have won that game had anyone else been kicking their FGs is asinine.

The Ravens scored 6 points in that game. The Colts D was the star of the game. The Colts win that game with any average kicker that day.[b]

And yet you root for Randy Moss, who got out of Oakland by half-assing it on the field and basically stealing their money. But oh wait, he plays for Boston team now, so that is okay, right? :goodposting:

Moss hasnt left the Pats. Why should I care how he left Oakland? And he didnt come to NE for the cash. He left Oakland to get away from an innept team that hired a Bed & Breakfast manager as their Offensive Coordinator.

I am very consistent in my stance on both guys.
don't forget the 40+ yarder he made v. the Titans in the brutal cold where the ball was deader than a doornail
That kick was insane. It looked like a block of ice.I have nothing bad to say about Adam Vinatieri, and I am only pleased when he fails because of the jersey on his back and the positive implications that are involved for the Patriots when the Colts lose.

No, they didn't - at least not when I was watching (my older daughter is 10 today and had her party at 2:00). I'm wondering about all of this myself, since the announcer didn't seem to be speculating. He sounded knowledgable and pointed out that Adam's pride would never allow him to use it as an excuse.
