What a voice she has. Her new song gives me chills and Im not ashamed to admit it. The best singer of this generation.
I am a big fan of hers but I honestly don't understand why people think the new song is so great. I think it is pretty average for her.

For me it's the vocal on the chorus. The use of a non-traditional vibrato. The flip into her upper register on the high notes. The sheer power on the extended notes. It's like a master class in vocal technique. Combine that with the level of emotion she conveys and it's quite remarkable.

You could have just said "It's good". :grad:

Clearly you're not a grown man.

It's hard to articulate. A traditional vibrato is a slight oscillation in pitch above and below the intended note. It creates a slight bit of movement in an otherwise held out note (and actually has the counterintuitive effect of releasing the tension of a held out note with no vibrato - which is why it is typically phased in at the end of the held out note). In addition to a standard vibrato (which is flawless), she also adopts a short, glottal upward pitch modulation on certain of the held out notes. It's actually a fairly simple technique (far less gymnastic than the "runs" you hear all the time in R&B music), but it's the tasteful placement and execution that make it remarkable.

If you want to hear what I'm describing, listen to the first chorus. The first held out note is "side" at the end of the first line. She uses a standard vibrato there (and it's a freaking really good vibrato). The second held out note is "times" at the end of the second line. There she sings the note straight without any vibrato (which intentionally creates a bit of tension), she then does the short glottal flip before dropping down to the lower note at the end of the phrase. On the second half of the chorus when she repeats those lines, she does the glottal flip on both "side" and "times," and adds a traditional vibrato to the drop down note at the end of the phrase. On subsequent choruses she mixes it up, even adding three glottal flips on one of the held out notes.

Broken down and explained, it doesn't seem like a big deal at all, but I submit that when people talk about the song being chill inducing, its the use of these vocal techniques (and the other ones I mention in the post above) on the chorus that are partly (and likely subconsciously) the cause.

Do grown men really listen to this?
Oh no, we're all to busy listening to ear splitting guitar riffs and screaming, intelligible vocals. Everything else in unmanly.
There's a whole lot in between that a grown man could find enjoyable.
What about her music then makes it seem odd that a grown man would enjoy?
Hard to say. Just strikes me as odd that grown men listen to this. I can understand "checking it out," but I'd never put it on in the car when I'm driving.

Crazy voice. Chill inducing. I watched the official video and then this live version back to back....could hardly tell any difference in voice quality.

Just effortless. Sam Smith is a male comparison. Those two in a different league.
Possibly Sia as well. http://youtu.be/8Hg_rIqOZHc
Never heard of her til last night when she was on SNL...she killed on both performances.
You may have heard her music before though. She sang Breathe Me, which was the finale song for Six Feet Under, and vocals on Titanium, which was a huge pop hit a few years ago.
As long as we're talking about songs grown men don't listen to, I'll add links to the two Sia tunes mentioned. Sia doesn't have the vocal and technical control that Adele does, but I still think she's an amazing singer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ds4pEBNGmc(she belts that note for ten full seconds - no small feat)

Sounds like you're struggling with some pretty rigid gender constructs.

You can't really like something unless you're open to liking it. And the more things you like/love, doesn't that further enrich your life? Make you happier? Why shut yourself off to anything?

not shutting anything out, I just don't like it. I'm not going to pretend to like it.

I actually find that hers is very natural where most singers force it. This genre is not my style, but I actually really like Adele's music. It's not pretentious, has real emotion, and her delivery is powerful.

Not liking it is perfectly understandable. Music is subjective. But why do you think you dislike it because of when you were born and the fact that you have a Y chromosome?

The way she spells her name is annoying to me....since day 1 of her becoming known whenever I see her name (uncluding this thread title) my mind reads.....(pronunciation) Add-a-lay

I'm willing to go down this road, but before we do, let me ask. Do you think there is any music that is more likely listened to by teenage girls, teenage boys, 20-something women, or grown men? Or do you think it is equally likely that all genders and ages listen to the same music?

I acknowledge that certain types of music are more likely to be popular among certain demographic groups, though I suspect that's due more to social conditioning than it is to innate musical taste. That said, and giving credence to social conditioning, I would think Adele's music, which focuses less on repetitive hooks and modern mixing techniques and more on traditional songwriting elements and quality musicianship, would appeal to an adult listener, regardless of gender. Overall, though, it seems fairly obvious that people in pretty much every demographic enjoy her music and this song in particular. It's part of the reason why her video was viewed 12 million times in the first 24 hours it was up. Adult males surely accounted for a lot of those views.

I listen to primarily old-school punk/hardcore, yet her music captivates me. Not ashamed to admit it at all.

I have found that as I age I prefer music with more complex lyrics and musical arrangements. I find that women usually enjoy simpler lyrics, such as those found in "Hello." I just find it really boring to listen to, and I do think it has something to do with my age and gender. It surprises me that other grown men would listen to her on a daily basis (in the car, etc.).

I agree she is hot and has a great voice. I suspect that is one of the reasons why men watch her video. If she looked like Roseanne Barr, I suspect her views, at least among men, would be much less.

Shes hot? She does kind of look like Roseanne

One pic completely touched up at a deceiving angle. She is very fat. I think she has a pretty face but she is most definitely not hot.
Well I've never seen her in real life. From what I've seen, I think she's pretty hot.

But then again, I've never heard of her until I saw this thread...

Try this song and see if you like it

I don't listen to her because she's "hot" or whatever label you want to throw on her.I think she has a tremendous voice who sings with passion but I get it may not be for some people and that's fine too.

So this new song is the only song of hers with which you are familiar?

Never heard of her? Classic rock only on your Spotify?

Yes. And only because I clicked the link in this thread.

All kinds of music. Jackie Greene and Ryan Bingham are on the current list. You should check them out.
