Adrian Peterson or Calvin Johnson (1 Viewer)

Let's assume that Peterson lands in Cleveland at #3 and Johnson in Tampa Bay at #4. Who would you rather have? I'm starting to think Johnson might be the guy in PPR leagues.

Team needs, team needs, team needs.Obviously you could make a case for Johnson in a PPR leagues, but AP will go #1 in almost all non-PPR leagues.

I agree that team needs are an important consideration, but I'm basically asking who people think will have the more productive fantasy career. Given the longer lifespan of WRs as opposed to RBs, Johnson is intriguing. I've got the #1 pick in one of my leagues and had considered Peterson to be my obvious choice ... but Johnson is a physical freak with (they say) solid character. We all covet the next mega RB, but Johnson looks pretty darn tempting right now.

I really can't answer which one, other than to take your team needs into consideration. I think Johnson is the safer pick, but I wouldn't advocate passing on Peterson if you are in dire straits at RB. One thing that scares me about Peterson is his running style (upright, see Chris Brown and injury concerns). However, Eric Dickerson also ran that way, and he wasn't too shabby. I'm not saying Chris Brown has the talent of AP, he doesn't, but it does give us something to guage injury concerns. Plus AP has been injured a couple times in college already.

I stick with the same philosophy as most, take the stud RB if you can. CJ could be the next great one, but it is much harder to get a great RB than a great WR.

I'm not convinced AP will be great, but I am convinced Johnson will be. I know I'm in the minority on this, and I'm not saying I would take Johnson over Peterson either. I don't have the 1.01 or 1.02 in any league, so that won't be a decision that I have to make. I can tell you that in a couple of my leagues I'm thin at RB and would take Peterson first.

It is definitely dependant on team needs, and if you are stacked at RB, then by all means take CJ. But I guess the way I tried to look at this question is that if you are solid at both positions, which would you take. In that case I take AD, because of the lack of RBs.

The answer depends heavily on your league's scoring and starting requirements. Both guys are excellent prospects. I think Peterson has a higher ceiling, but a lower floor and a shorter shelf-life. Johnson is the safe pick. Peterson is the boom or bust pick. He has tons of talent, but a weak supporting cast can really hinder a RB and he has legitimate long-term durability concerns.

One thing I haven't seen much talk about is Peterson's character. From all accounts, CJ's is impeccable across the board. Can anyone shed some light on AD in this regard?

He's supposed to be squeaky clean. Works hard and has a warrior's mentality. No issues here.

Are either of these worth making the trade up to get the 1.01 pick? I'm sure it'd cost a lot to trade into that pick, so are these guys either one worth the risk?

assuming ap goes to cleveland, i take him, historically rb's are going to get more touches than wr's so imo he has more upside, with the leagues current trend towards rbbc, doubt is increased as it appears calvie does not appear to carry the same ??? as most rookie wr's, the difference in fantasy points among stud wr's in the leagues i participate in is smaller than the difference in points among stud rb's, if i had the chance to get either one of these guys i would be in heaven but i consistently finish in the top 3 in most of my leagues (thanks to fbg's) and they are all dynasty so i never get the chance to even think about picking someone of their caliber. sure is fun to ponder tho.

Well, except for that Escalade he was driving around for a few months before the Bomar scandel surfaced.......

I don't know about that, a lot of times these sure fire RBs don't pan out, and guys that fall into your lap are the guys that really succeed. I mean 5 of Bloom's Top 9 Dynasty RBs were not 1st Round Picks, and were had relatively cheap. Portis may have been more expensive for some people, but Gore, Parker, R. Johnson, and Westbrook were not originally acquired for Top $. Even last year, Norwood and MJD could be had pretty cheap. Superstar WRs that are consistant like Smith, Fitz, TO, Harrison, Holt, 85 are very similar. I say if it's not PPR it most likely has to be AD.
