Advertising on Jerseys? (1 Viewer)

I wondered when this would happen.

Check out the Titans training camp jerseys. Big Baptist Hospital (big Titans sponsor) patch on front shoulder. Won't be game day of course, but it's start.

Hmm.

That's just wrong. I wouldn’t care if owners wallpapered every inch of every stadium in the league, but they really need to leave the field and the uniforms alone.

too much money available for the NFL for them to ignore it too much longer. i predict it will be in the next collective bargaining agreement.

Yeah, nothing says "NFL Europa" like NASCAR-like advertising on jerseys... :bowtie:

i have no problem with it
Part of me thinks advertising on the jersey itself is greedy, but then part of me says who cares. If it brings more money to the game (it is all about the bottom line), so be it, as long as it is not interfering with the game.

The reason advertisers are looking for this type of placement is due to Tivo and DVRs - nowadays, in order for your product to be actually viewed by the targeted audience is to place it where they have to see it in the course of watching the program. The whole ad model is shifting in television - I would not be surprised to see NASCAR style football jerseys in the near future. The Toyota Tennessee Titans vs. the Ford Detroit Lions, with Tundras and F-150's parked on raised pedestals behind the goal-posts...The Clairol Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, with all the gals blond one week, brunette the next...etc.

BTW, I'm not saying the above will be a good thing, but I do think it is on the horizon...

Look at soccer jerseys-one big walking billboard. The advertisement is bigger than the team logo!!!!!!!

Arsenal

Manchester United

Hopefully the NFL will not go this route. Extremely lame. The Nike and Reebok logos are bad enough.

I never understood why this upsets people so much. If I were an owner, I'd sell EVERYTHING -- including the name of the team. The Detroit Fords would be playing the Dallas Fighting Pepsis.

From a business standpoint it is brilliant.

From a fan stand point, it tarnishes the NFL's image in my opinion.

This is the thin end of the wedge. Before long, they'll be renaming the stadia after major corporations and letting the Superbowl be sponsored.

Advertising on the uniforms is nothing new...

Nike and Reebok both have their logo on the uniforms. I guess they are more accepted??

Not a surprise I guess. Owners are in the NFL to make money, and this is another way to do that. I figure sooner or later the NFL will allow sponsor patches on preseason games and eventually have it carry over to the regular season. Most soccer teams in the world have been doing it for a while - the NFL will follow suit. There's simply too much cash to be made to avoid it. I just hope the adverts are as obnoxious as the ones on soccer uniforms, though the numbers on the front of an NFL jersey seem to reduce the chances of that.

Japanese professional baseball teams are doing exactly that, but replacing the city name rather than the nickname (Ford Lions, Pepsi Cowboys, etc).

I say let them sell the uni advertising under one condition....all the proceeds go to the NFL's retirement fund.

I am referring to those retirees that have physical and mental problems and are given squat. I will take Jerry Kramer's and Mike Ditka's word on it.

I wouldnt mind if they wore ads on their jerseys if they agreed to also reduce the number of TV commercials.

...they made the uniforms
Having their logo on the uniform is advertisement, even if they made the uniform.
No kidding, I can dictionary.com the definition  I was saying that it is accepted because they made the uniforms. If Pepsi was a jersey-manufacturer it would be very different, though yes, it would still be advertising...

It would be interesting how your view would change if someone other than Nike/Reebok made the uniforms. What if the NFL sold out to the highest bidder and Nike wasn't one of them? I doubt that if Puma made the uniform, people would be as accepting as they are with Nike/Reebok. Nike/Reebok have become a part of our lives and we don't notice it as much as we would with unacceptable ad's like the Geico Illegal Forward Pass.

I don't think it would be an issue. Not too long ago Wilson made NFL uniforms, they had the little "W" on the jersey (I think it was near the shoulder). Nobody seemed to care then.

The jersey/glove/shoe maker having its own brand on the item is a far far far cry from another company putting a mark on them. Just ask Jim McMahon.

This is not apples to apples, IMO. Reebok paid $1Billion to have thier advertising on uniforms. FYI...the only Nike logo is on footwear.

I still can't believe it says WILSON all across the top of the football. Talk about advertising. It should just be all brown with no words on it, except for maybe NFL. :wall:I agree, I hope NFL jerseys do not turn into NASCAR.

This will happen... no doubt about it. There's too much money available for it not to happen.

I know it seems like it would be crass and distracting, but we thought the same thing about stadium names being sold, or about ads on the baseball fences and hockey boards. We'll get used to it, they're just trying to figure out how quickly it can happen.

How so? I see this as the same. If you buy a Polo shirt, you are essentially a walking advertisement for Polo. Advertising is advertising, no matter how subtle or in your face it is.

I am not saying the Wilson logo is a bad thing, it's just a brand that you are used to seeing.
