Advice for getting up to speed with Twitter, Facebook and other social (1 Viewer)

OK, so I've been sorta anti-Facebook from the start. I signed up and outside of family I already got a bunch of requests from people way back in who I have zero freakin' interest in connecting with. My family is on it, and if I could somehow manage who I want and who I don't while not sharing my personal life with the world I could be back on board.

My mindset has changed with Twitter. I had an account, it got hacked and somehow a Viagra ad got sent to some chick from my account, she responded back with an FU and I deleted the account. Originally I just followed a few friends and airlines to check fares for a Cabo trip. Since then I've seen people use Twitter well, including a gal I sat next to who was communicating with airline customer service real-time about a lost bag mid flight. I'm seeing real business uses out of Twitter now.

I'm going to have some time over the next 5 weeks and want to invest it into getting involved with social media. Want to properly set up Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. I am pretty involved with LinkedIn from a business perspective already. What's the best way to educated? I've seen certification courses but wondering if those are more tailored to businesses getting set up vs. individuals. Are there books/courses out there you'd recommend?

Google your questions. The answers will likely be in results from forums that will lead you to other information.

Or you can ask here and probably get some good tips.

What specifically do you want to know?

Not sure. Don't know what I don't know. How to best set up accounts and decide who to friend, follow, etc to maximize effectiveness without wasting time. Privacy settings, etc.

For Twitter, I started following things to get information. @breakingnews, @baltimoresun, my local traffic guy, my local weather guy, the beat writer for the Orioles, a local news radio station etc. After a while, I started seeing people who my "follows" were retweeting and I started following them. I also follow some people for entertainment like @deadspin and @worldstarfunny. I follow a few athletes and celebrities, but not many.

There are also some things I follow that have to do with the industry I work in, and it keeps me up to date and new information. I find things out before a lot of other people through twitter, which is nice.

Start small and you'll grow.

Twitter-Once you're into it and know what you're doing, it can get addicting. I signed up to follow beat writers and local sports radio guys who use it religiously. From there you'll find other things you're interested in, follow your interests and if it's garbage, annoying, or clogs your feed with BS you simply unfollow.

I didn't bother following any friends or family because I can read their mindless junk on Facebook and don't need to see it twice. It's more enjoyable being able to say anything and everything without everybody you know reading it.
