Advise on Car Purchase for Son ---- Mustang vs. Nissan 370 (1 Viewer)

370. If it were a current year Mustang I'd say that. I love the remodel. But my neighbor down the street has a 370. I stare at it in his driveway every time I walk my dog.

D1 in what sport that means a lot. Sounds like you are spoiling the f.uck out of your kids and that 12 year old is going to grow up entitled and think he "deserves" everything. Im probably the same age as your son (I'm 22 btw) and my parents bought me a #### 2000 eclipse when i was 16 for 3k while i put up 1k for it. And also I'm calling :bs: on he "earned" half to buy a MKX umpiring. Just looked up the prices and they are roughly 20k now so I'm assuming it was around 30k then. Ive umpired little leagues when i was 16-18 and didn't make anywhere close to 15k. #### this whole past summer i just spent 3 months as an accounting intern and i only made 4k but to me that is ALOT so unless he was and accounting intern for 2 years as a kid he received a lot of free money. just my :2cents:
you need to negociate a better deal. Just this past year of his senior year, he umped 2 nights a week during spring (at 45/game). then he did tournaments on weekends until high school playoffs started............7 games/day X 40.......so 500 per weekend. So yes over 3 years, his bank account grew to 18K. His 3 year old used car was purchased for 21K...........so even paying half, he had extra saved up.

and baseball is his sport.

If you really wanted to be a good dad you should have taken that 20k and matched his earnings into an IRA. At his age that kind of cash compounding for 30 years could set him up to retire at 50. Instead you're buying him a hunk of metal with an engine and some rubber. Great choice.

Yeah, I kinda do.

Hey RealReactions, are you cooler than Eminence?

What do you guys him to do? Renege on the agreement he made? It may not have been a great idea in hindsight but what would he be teaching his son If he backed out now?

If I were you I'd try talking him out of a sports car. I bought a 370z fresh off a divorce and at age 27 and almost killed myself a couple times.

That sometimes after further evaluation and when new evidence presents itself as it has in this thread, you need to renegotiate poor contracts.

Let the poor guy buy his son a car. Jesus.
:goodposting: Lot of judgement and jealousy in this thread.
If the original poster has a fully funded retirement, a 12-18 month emergency fund, has no outstanding debts including mortgage, and is comfortable with the idea of his child in a vehicle that is financially a poor choice, and isn't safe, then he should go ahead as intended.. no question about it.

Your son handing you down a car.

****ing priceless.

No wonder our society is going to hell in a hen basket. Are you serious? He can keep that car.

Get yourself a new set of wheels bread maker and get yer head out of your ###.
This is spot on. He didn't 'earn' the car. You are paying for college. He 'saved you money' so that's his 'earning' a newish sports car?

What happens if he loses the cap classic after the first year?? The "savings"'seems like it isn't realized until it is actually received

Eminence seems around my age at 22 and is into sports. If the dude is an athlete or was and likes the black the #### out when drinking he would fit right in with me and my boys. If he isn't anything like that then ima go with a hard yes on your question

I need to replace the 2007 Murano w/ 200K miles as it is on it's last legs.

Son drives a 2010 Lincoln MKX at college, so it would be a prefect hand me down to me
This is what I have a problem with - why is your son driving a newer car than you? I assume you are the one who paid for it.
My son drove a $1000 volvo wagon (perfect for packing all his stuff into) to college and for a year or 2 after college. He bought a newer used car after he moved into an apartment. My daughter drove a different $1000 volvo to college & now 3yrs after college she "upgraded" to a $3000 subaru.

I've been called smart, frugal, miserly, and mean for not giving my kids cars to drive. My brother gave his daughter a brand new Explorer on her 16th birthday... she totaled it within a month of getting her license.

People spend their money the way they see fit. I have no problem with that as long as they don't come back & ask the government for relief from their own decisions.

One of the best things you can do is match a Roth IRA at that kind of age.

You guys should definitely go out and get blacked out drunk together. Don't drop the soap.

You guys do realize he's not asking you to buy the car for his kid, right?
It's not him that I'm concerned with. It's his kid. That kind of money can do a lot of cool stuff to set a kid up. Depending on the part of the country, it could buy him a house he could then rent out rooms to his friends in. Could give him a heads tart on a retirement plan. There's lots you could do that would have a real, sustainable affect on his life, possibly for years to come. That stuff is a lot cooler than a car if you're a boring grown up.

If you can use something like this to set your kid up and teach him about smart money decisions young, I think that would be cool.

I mean, he may blow everything chasing tail anyway, but at least you gave it a shot.

A much better ROI than some dumb sports car.

What financial education does the kid have? How much money does the OP have in the bank? How has the kid done with money to this point in his life?Lots of assuming, projecting and judging going on in here. You don't want to buy your son a sports car? Don't. They guy wants to buy his kid one. What the #### do I care? It's his money, not mine.

First - There sure are a lot of people ######## about "entitled kids," etc. I don't think what the OP wants to do with his money really is of anyone's concern. If I can afford to buy my kid a car some day, and I think he's deserved it, I'll get him one. My definition of "deserved it" is up to me and me alone. Everybody is in a different situation, so making blanket statements is complete BS. Add to it that not everyone cares at all about what they drive...My in-laws probably pull in near 7 figures a year and at one point, she was driving a used PT Cruiser, and he had a Ford Five Hundred. They just didn't care about cars. My MIL gave her Grand Cherokee to my SIL when she got the used PT...similar "trading down" situation.

Second - to the OP - If it HAS to be one or the other, I'd go Mustang. The ONLY thing I'm basing that on is the second, younger kid, not the kid getting the car now. Your son in college is old enough to have driven for a few years. There are worse cars (albeit many better cars) for a college kid, but whatever...but...if you're going to hand one of these sports cars over to your now-12-year-old when he's old enough to drive, that's my concern. A 370Z is a FAST car. I had my old G35 (older version of the 370Z engine, a bit heavier) far north of 100 many times...and the 370Z is faster than that. I'm sure Mustangs are pretty fast too, but they're also bigger. I'd get the safer of the two, which, based on size alone, is the Mustang. Again, there are MANY other cars that are safer that I'd consider...but I'm not sure why you have these two as your options.

Third - In a bubble, not considering who's driving...if it was me, I'd get a 370Z all day. Fun car to drive. I had a buddy with a 350Z, and as mentioned, I had a G35. Awesome cars...the 370 only builds on those with more power, etc.
