Age Old Debate: Is A Hot Dog A Sandwich? - Enter The Cube Rule (1 Viewer)

Here in the Sandwich Islands, we call hot dogs sandwiches. But we make them out of Spam.

Of course the preferred ultraprocessed meat/starch combo is a Spam musubi, which kinda breaks the Cube Rule.

I’m still hung up on this sliced meatball discussion. Assuming that’s an Oklahoma Style Meatball Sub or something?

I make a mean meatball and marinara so naturally I make a lot of meatball sandwiches and I always slice them in half. Makes them fit into the roll better preventing gaps that would otherwise result in bites having no meatball. Makes the sandwich less messy too.

Hey Gemini, Are meatballs usually cut in half for sandwiches?

Yes, meatballs are often cut in half for sandwiches to make them more compact and easier to eat:

  • Size: Large meatballs are easier to eat than small ones, which can fall out of the sandwich.

  • Sandwich structure: Cutting the meatballs in half helps them fit together better in the sandwich.

  • Spoon: You can use the side of a spoon to cut the meatballs in half

A hot dog could be considered a sandwich if there were a hot dog loaf in the deli case. If a deli worker took that loaf and sliced it like ham or salami, you could then put those slices between two pieces of bread, similar to how you would with sliced turkey or roast beef, and add your choice of condiments. In that case, you might call it a "Hot Dog Sandwich." However, since we typically eat hot dogs in their link form, served in a hot dog bun, they are not sandwiches. They are simply "hot dogs". And good grief they’re not tacos.

So a chicken parm sandwich or a banh mi or meatball sandwich arent sandwiches? The meat specifically needs to be sliced?
Meatballs are usually sliced in some form. Chicken breasts are often pounded to create a flatter shape, making them ideal for sandwiches. In banh mis, pork belly is cut into slabs. Good day.
He’s talking about the bun not being sliced all the way through. JUST LIKE A HOT DOG. :lmao:

i have decided to ask the opinions of the locals here and i will report back on my findings re: hot dogs (würstel) and hamburgers. with there officially being 721 different types of rolls here, the answer may be a bit long.

meatballs are not cut in half, bread is scooped out of the inside to help fit the whole meatball is the only acceptable answer, stupid AI.

It may just be an NYC area thing. I don't recall many, if any, times I've had meatballs sliced on a meatball sub.

There's a difference between meatballs and "balls of meat or meat-like product"

Although I will say if I ever am forced to eat Subway, the meatball is my go to. It's the least awful of their options.

Touche :lmao:

What if you made 1 long hotdog shaped meatball (or meatdog) but still put it on a sub roll with some marinara and melted mozzarella

Is that still a sandwich?
I remember a couple times grilling burgers but just had hot dog buns. I just altered the shape of the burgers to fit the bun. Folded the cheese squares in half and laid them end to end.

Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly. An enchilada is sushi, but nigiri sushi is toast?

Makes sense.

my language teacher here, who is italian, says a hamburger is a sandwich based on the bun. he does not consider a hot dog a sandwich for the same reason. the bread does not support it being a sammich.
