lmao. this is comical. how is this guy still a owner is beyond me.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6027281

"As former Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable was attempting to lead his team to the playoffs this season, owner Al Davis began deducting $20,000 from each of his head coach's paychecks until he had withheld $120,000 in fines, according to team sources. "

Al Davis is not in a position to fine his head coach and not disclose what the issue is. Just makes it harder for him to find a new head coach.

Unfortunately, there will always be someone willing to take the job. It would be great though, if everyone "black-balled" the organization and refused to interview. Last time around it seemed as though this may happen, but again, there is always someone willing to take it, and now Cable has HC experience on his resume.

With that said, who would take a job when it is pretty clear that you will not get paid for doing it?

Is there a process to remove an owner from owning a team? I understand what owner means, but hey, rules always change depending on who they are enforced on.

Al ought to have a Fan contest: fans write in an explain why they want to be HC. Al picks ten, interviews them, and hires the most knowledgeable for a low ball offer.

Why not? Great marketing ploy and he won't be able to hire a professional with a great resume anyway.

Hue Jackson, current OC, will be their next HC. There's little doubt in my mind.

There are only 32 of these jobs on the planet. Guys like Hue looking to break into the ranks of NFL HC for the first time will always be there, and it's a good move for them no matter how awful the job gets because of Crazy Al's meddling. It's worth it to have the experience as a stepping stone for the next landing spot.

I hope for Al's sake he's never left alone with Cable.

Cable looks like he could snap the old dude in half with 9 fingers tied behind his back.

Seems like it'd be more up Jerry Jone's alley, but make it a reality show like the Apprentice. If done well, it could actually be a really entertaining show. Seems like people go there to have HC experience. Having a bad record while at the Raiders probably doesn't hurt much since Davis's meddling is probably taken into account.

Why wouldn't you want to be the Raiders HC if you've never been an HC?

If you do poorly and fired, blame is easy to put on Al Davis and co.

If you do great and are fired, well...you succeeded as a Raiders coach to a point...aka Mission Impossible.

Either way your going to be fired in .5-3 years and have HC experience and maybe even something to point at and say.."hey...yeah I did that...with the Raiders and Al Davis."

But you have to sue to get paid.

Who in their right mind would want this job?
I recall when Whisenhunt was interviewed by Al (and still an asst with the Steelers) that afterwards he was trying to be very nice about the process (this was minutes after in the parking lot) but you could tell he did not like what he had been exposed to. I wont say that he was "shaken" but he was certainly upset about the process and the situation. It was then that Whiz was also stating that he already didnt think it would be a good fit. Was very very odd for a man looking to be a head coach.

As a long time Raider fan, it is more difficult each year to remain a true fan. At this point in my life, I cannot simply switch fans. I do not watch or follow the Raiders like I used to. I watch my fantasy players and watch good matchups each week during the season. It is not just that the Raiders lose. I have been through many of those seasons. Instead, it is the stupidity of Davis's moves with coaching staffs and players. It is the lack of a future. I have no hope or reason to think that the Raiders will finish above 8-8 in 2011 or make the playoffs. It will be another wasted season. I do not live near Oakland. I feel sorry for the rabid fans that spend tons of hard-earned money on Raider tickets and gear.

I am not surprised that Davis did not keep Cable. Cable is an average HC. But, how can Davis think for a second that he is going to find someone better when he does not want to pay for a strong HC or let that HC actually be the HC. One of Davis's biggest problems is that he wants to coach the team but not be the coach. That will never work. Ever.

Not to mention the team isn't entirely devoid of talent.

Does Oakland have a post-Davis plan? Who is the heir apparent? At least Raiders fans know Al probably won't last another 5/10 years. The Bengals have Mike Brown and his daughter for the long-term foreseeable future. :barf:

David, Joe - it sure would be great if the winner of the FBG/FFPC would automatically be selected as the next Raider head coach. What a contest!Could you guys get to work on that?

Nice! The weekly "let's make fun of the old demented guy" thread. Everyone feel better about themselves now?
You're actually a supporter of Al? :scared:
You Raider fans sure are a defensive bunch at times.
Touchy subject, and I'm just over it. We get it, the guy is old and he's made some HIGHLY questionable moves. He's an easy target. Why not also make fun of the kid in a wheelchair at the supermarket? Not much difference. And this is coming from someone who has said mean-spirited things about Al in the past. The last several years haven't been easy, but the man has delivered three Super Bowl titles in my lifetime. I will go to my grave being thankful to him for that. Ask Eagles fans or Vikings fans or Chargers/Browns/Lions/Cardinals fans how badly they'd like one Super Bowl ring.Pat Kirwan of Sirius NFL radio and NFL dot com has known Al for years. He still goes to Raiders training camp every August, and he swears "Mr. Davis" is as mentally sharp as he's ever been. Why, then, have we seen so many peculiar player & coaching moves? Well, maybe he's simply like ANY older person in ANY walk of life. Obstinant and set in his ways. He's not going to be around forever, so I deal with whatever comes.

And for the record, I'm completely fine with Jackson's promotion to HC.

That's quite an endorsement.Anyway, I don't think the wheelchair kid has run an NFL franchise into the ground, and continually tried to rip people off on their contracts.

:lmao: glad you like him. When Hugh Culverhouse died, I high-fived my dad.

The Raiders last Super Bowl win was 27 years ago. And worse than anything, they've been Lions-level bad the past 8 years. But, enjoy.

You asked; I answered. What can I tell ya?

I actually don't have any problem with him running HIS organization into the ground. If the fans continue to support the organization based on the goodwill generated by a 27 year old SB trophy, so be it.But screwing coaches out their signed contracts is a different matter altogether. It's not like this has happened to one guy, it's like EVERY guy over the past decade or so is getting ripped off. That's not right and makes the organization and league look bad no matter HOW many championships the team won back in the day and how old and senile the guy is. Being old doesn't give you the right to do the things Al is doing. You want to run a guy out of town because he doesn't believe Russell is a "great player"? Fine, that's your business Al. But don't engage in a public slander campaign about the guy and steal money from him on his way out the door. That's BS at any age.He either knows what he is doing (in the most literal sense) or he doesn't. If he does, he's a ##### at any age. If he doesn't, somebody get a power of attorney or something and deal with him. But I lean toward the former, and so I don't have any sympathy for folks bashing him.

Are you completely fine with an NFL owner fining his head coach $20,000 every single paycheck, for unspecified reasons?Follow up question: do you think that such tactics improve the team's chances of winning?

Enough said. Let's hear what the arbitrator thinks first.

In this particular case, the new HC was already on the staff of an improving team. So no, I'm hopeful this incident will not be detrimental.

I get that Al Davis is the punchline of a lot of jokes. He's older. He's made at least one questionable draft pick (DHB is the one that comes to mind). That said, I'm willing to give Al Davis a pass and a nod of respect. He's had a unique career in the NFL and earned the right to make some mistakes. I respect that the buck stops on his desk and he takes personal responsibility for the success and failure of his team. Before you judge him, you should examine his career resume. IMO he's earned that.

How can any of us know all the facts of this case? Without the facts, how can you be so quick to judge?

Where did I judge? It was a theoretical question. You can answer it without knowing all the facts regarding Davis and Cable.

Why do you feel you have the right to know these specific reasons? Are you arguing that all contracts for NFL coaches should be public documents so that you can better understand the nature of these fines?
