How valuable can you be if your team didnt qualify?
in the case of Mike Trout, really, REALLY valuable. He was worth 10 wins by himself. No one even came close to that level of performance.
:shrug:I can finish out of the play-offs with, or without, you = definition of replaceable part
Oh my god.

I know it doesn't mean jack #### but the CBS sports poll today asked who should win the AL MVP, Trout or Cabrera. With 50,000+ votes in it's 85% to 15% for Cabrera. I was shocked by this.

15 percent is a bit high. Congrats to Trout on his rookie of the year award. Well deserved. Perhaps best rookie year ever.

Relievers get no love but Craig Kimbrel should be in the Cy Young discussion.

ROY to Bryce and Trout. I can't argue with either (although Miley did have a good case).

Yeah, I think he should be too. And Cueto is not far from the level of the three finalists either. It's one of those years where I don't think there is much separation between 1 through 5.

I disagree about Kimbrel. Would you consider a bench player/defensive replacement type for a Gold Glove?Other problem is that relief pitching is a LOT easier than starting. Consider what happens when almost any quality starter arm is thrown into relief duty during the playoffs. You guys are Nats/NL East fans ... remember when Jordan Zimmermann pitched a relief inning during Game 4 of the NLDS? Added 3 MPH to his fastball, struck out the side, they never had a prayer. And Zimmermann wasn't even among the best 10 or so NL starters in 2012.Relievers are almost all failed starters; they do what they do because they can't contribute to the team's cause in the more significant way by pitching 200+ innings. Yeah, some of them are great at it, but it's a lesser skill that they're excelling at.

Trout and Harper. I really hope it's a decade like Bird vs. Magic. Baseball could use more discussions like "Mantle, Mays or Snider?"

I think Kimbrel had one of those rare years for a closer deserving of consideration. I think there's an argument to be made that it's the best year any closer has ever had. His K/9, WHIP, and ERA are better than Gagne's 2003 season when he won the Cy Young. If I had a vote, I'd probably go for Kershaw, for some of the reasons you described. I just don't think there's a large gap between that group of five.

If y'all think Kimbrel should be in the CY Young discussion - what do you think about Rodney?

I don't think Rodney was as good as Kimbrel this year. Plus, part of the reason why I think Kimbrel is in the discussion is because nobody in the NL is really jumping out at me. Verlander and Price are better than any options in the NL.

There's good relievers and then there is Kimbrel. 0.65 WHIP, ERA at 1.00, 116K's in 63IP, 42-45 in saves. Those are elite, dominant numbers. I don't think one could complain if Kimbrel, Gio, Dickey, Cueto, or Kershaw wins it though.

I wouldn't necessarily complain, but I do think it's an awkward question. You can't really compare closers to starters any more than you can compare pinch-hitters/defensive replacements to starters. And I wonder if any of the top 20 or so starters would be able to replicate it if they changed roles. And as great as he is, the Braves would be far better off if Kimbrel could pitch 200 innings for them with less impressive numbers. Honesty, if I'm building a team for one season and I have a choice of Kimbrel's 2012 or Cole Hamels' 2012, I take Hamels.

Price well deserving but two LA writers had JV third, that's the outrage.
Really stupid, but one guy had Price third as well. Could've went to either guy. Can't say either of them would have been robbed.
Yeah the guy who voted Rodney first had Price third. The issue was the LA writers had Price first, Weaver second and JV third on their ballots which shows they are possibly the dumbest homers in all of baseball. Probably would have been best if it was a tie, but Price deserved it so I have no real issue. So those same two clowns probably voted Miggy third or something, watch.

I don't really care about the Cy Young, but JV was clearly better.
HOMER UP. Price had the most difficult "Quality of Opponents" of any MLB starter, according to SABR.They are both great pitchers who had great season. Can't really say one was "clearly better" which is why the vote was so close. But, whatever.

I know I owe a detailed response but I'm really lazy today so can I just say - WAR, K/9, BB/9, ERA+, K, and a large IP aren't made up for by a small difference in the OPS+ for the batters they faced?
