I'm having a problem understanding how peanut butter on door numbers makes it so you can't tell the difference between a door to a cell and the door to the outside. Or why you don't pay closer attention to what door you're opening when you see that the door number is covered with peanut butter.

I believe the number background, on a cell video camera, looks the same color as peanut butter.  They changed the number on the cell using peanut butter, then called to the control room "hey, open door 10" or whatever.  And then he looked, saw 10, and opened it.  But the cell was door 18, the door to outside was 10. So they ran.
