While not young and a relative stop gap measure. 33 isn't normally silly old for interior OLmen.benson_will_lead_the_way said:Report: Jets release Pro Bowl G Alan Faneca The Jets have reportedly released LG Alan Faneca. The headline here reads "Jets release Pro Bowl G Alan Faneca." A Pro Bowler Faneca was in 2009, but he sure didn't play like it. Second-round pick Vlad Ducasse now looks to be locked in at left guard. Faneca, 33, will draw some interest, but won't approach the $7.5 million he was due from the Jets. Apr. 23 - 11:59 pm et

noFaneca is one of the worst pass blocking guards in the NFL right now and grossly overrated but still surprised at the suddeness of his release. He was also still a valuable leader and adequate run blocker. Could the Jets be hoping a team signs him to free up space to add another FA. Did the final 8 rule impact the release?
Faneca has been a turnstile at Guard for the last few seasons in pass blocking. Made last couple Pro Bowls on name recognition only.My first thought is that I would buy his plane ticket to Oakland, but you have to wonder. Is he an 'old' 33?You have to wonder why the Jets were willing to get rid of him. This is a team that is making their move now, picking up vets at an alarming rate, and they release a Pro Bowl G, to replace him with a kid from UMASS? To save money? Nah, I ain't buying that.

Jets released LG Alan Faneca.
Faneca, whose impending release was first reported by NFL Network's Mike Lombardi and later confirmed by the Newark Star-Ledger, now becomes an unrestricted free agent. In terms of possible fits, the Cardinals make sense with old pals Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt on the coaching staff, as well as Taitusi Lutui expressing displeasure with not having a long-term deal.
Ryan says Jets won't release Faneca, Ellis, Thomas

Rex Ryan, responding to an Internet report that the Jets were set to release guard Alan Faneca, linebacker Bryan Thomas and defensive end Shaun Ellis after this week's NFL Draft, reacted with sarcasm and said it had "no validity.''
“I’m just shocked that David Harris, Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard and Damien Woody weren’t on that list as well,'' Ryan said. "I guess if you can throw enough names out there maybe you hit one.’’
Ryan added, “Bryan Thomas, I’ll just say right now, is not going to be released. I’m not going to talk about the whole roster.’’
Asked specifically about Faneca and Ellis, Ryan said, “Whatever. Just put any name you want in there. I’m not going to speculate on someone throwing out a story with no validity to it. You take that for whatever it’s worth.’’
****
Ryan talked for the first time about newest Jet Jason Taylor, who'll sign his two-year contract tomorrow.
“We expect Jason to play a bunch and be a major contributor to our defense,’’ Ryan said. “Clearly, we have an outstanding group already, but you can expect Jason to be out there a bunch. We actually want to take some snaps away from Calvin (Pace) and ‘BT’ (Bryan Thomas) because it’s a long season and you’ve got to stay fresh.
“You’ve got to be able to rush passer in the fourth quarter. Those are things we really wanted to get better at. We lsot a lot of close games late in the fourth quarter when you’ve got to get people off the field in critical situations. Adding Jason Taylor is really going to be something for us.''
When Ryan was asked about Taylor going from one rival to another, he said, "I look at it like this: What was the impact Roger Clemens had on the Yankees? He was a Red Sox and he went to the Yankees and helped out. I look at Johnny Damon as the same deal.
"If Jason can have same impact on the Jets as those players had on Yankees and help the Jets win a championship I think we’ll all be happy.
"The great thing about Jason is he’s coming in here to be a part of something special. I told him, ‘Jason, if you come here, we think we’re going to have the No. 1 ranked defense in football. If you don’t come here, we think we’re going to have the No. 1 ranked defense in football.’ ’’
Asked whether Taylor will participate in the offseason program, Ryan said, "Absolutely he’s going to be here. We’ve discussed it. There are some things on the schedule that he’s already had (planned). He has quite a few foundations in Miami.
"This is a voluntary workout, but I have a funny feeling Jason is going to volunteer to be here.’’
Especially with no cap this year, I don't think this has anything to do with money. Several Jets' fans have posted that Faneca's performance declined at the end of last year.I think this move deserves more attention than it's gotten here.I think the Jets have had maybe the best offseason of any team in the NFL, but I hate this move for them.I don't have the cap numbers in front of me, but if the Jets could have kept Faneca by not signing Tomlinson, I think that would have made far more sense.
I totally forgot that there was no cap this year. Did Faneca struggle with run blocking as well, or was it mainly in pass protection?Especially with no cap this year, I don't think this has anything to do with money. This is a real head scratcher to me. I like Ducasse, but that is putting a ton of faith into a rookie, especially one who didn't even play D 1. It would not be unprecedented however. Adam Timmerman started as a 7th round rookie for the Packers.Detractors are going to point to his weak pass blocking, but if he was a premier pass blocker, he would be a tackle. He is still an elite run blocker. I don't think he will come cheap this year either. A team isn't just going to scoop him up for the veteran's minimum. Any team that needs a great run blocking guard should be running to the phone.Very interesting move by the Jets. They know Faneca better than anyone, and I do have faith in their decision making. But what was the ultimate plan here? Did they love Ducasse, who while physically gifted appears to need a year or two to develop? Were they trying like crazy to move up to take Iupati or Pouncey but couldn't do it? Is there a FA G they love? Will they take another G in this draft? Are they considering switching Woody to LG and now will sign a RT? For all of Faneca's faults in the passing game, he was a really good run blocker, even at 33. I'm not happy with the move, especially if it was purely a cost-cutting one, but I don't write the checks. Too early to understand what the plan was, IMO. They could end up signing Flozell Adams, playing him at RT and moving Woody to LG before the off-season is over, so who knows what all this means.
Did you watch him in any Jets games? He was a huge force in the running game. And I could be wrong Steelers fans, but wasn't pass blocking always a struggle for Faneca? I could be wrong, but I remember them saying that was his weakness. The Jets are going to miss him, and I think the running game is going to suffer a little bit.Maurile Tremblay said:http://profootballfocus.com/cstats.php?tab...e=a&stats=o(Note that Woody started all 16 games at RT last year; but that's not the point of my link.)bicycle_seat_sniffer said:AJ smith call the man, right now

The fact that there is no cap this season makes it worse. He was still a very effective run blocker. When he and Brick pulled to the right the Jets run game was highly effective. He has slowed down in pass protection but he still had something left. I hate this move.Adebisi said:I think this move deserves more attention than it's gotten here.

No Faneca was solid at worst in pass blocking during his prime years. His last year or two with the Steelers is when he really started to decline in his pass protection.Did you watch him in any Jets games? He was a huge force in the running game. Steeler fans warned us.. BUT, at the time, the Jets had a young LT and a young C who needed a stabilizing force in between them....He was a great fit for what the Jets needed but, yeah, at times when you saw the Pass proctection break down and you would see Faneca shaking his head trailing his guy and looking down at Sanchez you would just say "JEEZ, old Man"...I thought 1 more year of Faneca would be a nice transition but, I have a ton of faith in Callahan running an OL.As for PSL's - don't they still owe Faneca 5 million? So people think a million or 2 really effects a PSL situation? I don't think there's any tie at all.Faneca can still help some teams, including the Jets for about 6 million dollars less than he was due to gat paid this year. His pass blocking last year wasn't anything near pro bowl caliber. That part of his game was in decline when he left the Steelers, and it's getting worse. He is still a reliable run blocker. I much would have preferred the Jets keep him, but over 7 mil for an average OLG is just too much money. Add the fact that the Jets are still struggling to sell PSL's, and there you go.
I had forgotten they still had to pay him over 5 mil anyway, so I agree, the PSL's have nothing to do with it. Still, I'd rather have held him, especially for 2 mil. Faneca was the right move when the Jets got him, both Mangold and D'Brick needed a vet between them. probably not any longer though, it's their turn to bring along a rookie now.Steeler fans warned us.. Arizona signing an ex-Steeler? I am SHOCKED!!!!just reported on NFLN that he's agreed to 1 year deal with the Cardinals.
They're up to three ex-Jets this off-season, too (Faneca, Rhodes, Feely).Arizona signing an ex-Steeler? I am SHOCKED!!!!just reported on NFLN that he's agreed to 1 year deal with the Cardinals.
