I am a Lions fan and last year was their best year by far since I became a fan in 1970.
Prior to that, the Lions won ONE playoff game in my entire life and I'm 63 years old. Think about that.
During that time we didn't have many good teams. The 1970 team had a great defense but could not score enough points to win. We lost 5-0 in the playoffs to Dallas.
The 1970 season was when Tom Dempsey kicked an NFL record 63 yard field. Of course Justin Tucker broke that record with a 67 yarder against, of course, the Lions.
In 1971, Chuck Hughes became the only NFL player to die after collapsing the field (he suffered a heart attack).
Shortly before the start of the 1974 season, head coach Don McCafferty suffered a heart attack and died.
The Lions also had very good teams in the early 90s. But offensive lineman Erik Andolsek was killed when struck by a semi-truck and Mike Utley was paralyzed by an injury during a game.
So even when there were good teams, there were tragedies.
I don't think any team can have anything worse happen to them than the things that happened to the Lions.
Lions fans are resilient. Yes, some jumped off the bandwagon and others came close. But those of us that stuck around survived.
