Rotoworld:

"According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, Mike Singletary met with his coaching staff Monday and decided Alex Smith would start over Troy Smith in Week 14.

A big shocker, as Troy led the team to a 3-2 record after Alex started the season 1-6. Troy will assume backup duties, and should be dropped in all formats. Alex hasn't shown anything in the past to warrant fantasy ownership, and there are plenty of safer options in two quarterback leagues. As for the fallout, neither quarterback found the key to unlocking Michael Crabtree's potential. Vernon Davis is fresh off a big performance in Week 13 and he's historically played better with Alex under center. Safely play him as an elite tight end down the stretch."

LOL. This is probably the right call but man. Singletary is a fool.

Vernon Davis gets a bump!

He just wont die. BTW I think Crabtree is a MUST start this week
I also think this helps Crabtree. Maybe not a lot but at least a little. Alex Smith stinks but I think he's a more talented passing QB than Troy Smith.
Disagree. At least T. Smith has (very limited) upside. This is a terrible move.
I didn't see much upside with him lately. I thought he was absolutely horrible against Arizona outside of a couple of throws. Same against the Packers although he can get cut some slack there because Green Bay has a good pass defense. I think he makes one good throw out of every 10. Alex Smith can make two good throws out of every 10.Progress. :banned:

Not really. Alex Smith sucks and can't/won't go downfield. Crabtree scored more with Troy, in less games, than he did with Alex. The only players I see this benefiting are Vernon Davis, who runs the one long route Alex can throw with any confidence, and Westbrook, who should benefit from one thousand check downs. Crabtree will be about the same.

True, but he caught more passes per game with Alex:W/Alex Smith: 4 receptions per gameW/Troy Smith: 2.6 receptions per gameHe also averaged more receiving yards per game although not by a huge amount:W/Alex Smith: 47.4 yards per gameW/Troy Smith: 44.4 yards per game

Singletary is an idiot. In a pivotal game that could decide playoff hopes he changes the formula that has been working. So what if we got smoked by GB or TB, those were guaranteed loses. But we can beat SEA with the formula that has been working. What a ####### tool.

I don't see what the big deal about playing one lousy QB instead of another lousy QB is. Troy Smith has stunk up his last 3 games in a row.

Personally, I am a fan of the Niners and I do not want to watch Alex Smith play another game, ever again. Troy Smith is not a good QB, but then, Troy Smith has not almost single-handedly lost games for us with horrific decision making - and I intentionally say "almost single-handedly" because somehow Alex Smith cleverly disguises his team-killing maneuvers behind irritating excuse after excuse - like in the Atlanta game, where the blame was placed on the Niner defense for letting Matt Ryan make the final drive and losing a fumble on an INT return ... as though the Niner D weren't the ONLY thing keeping SF in the lead despite Smith's horrific turnover-laden play. All off season I have heard the talking heads excuse Smith's crappiness because of OC and system changes. Then, the excuses became confidence issues - so we had to avoid any semblance of QB competition to protect his fragile self esteem. Then we had to listen to excuses about SF's OL and DEF .. as though any other DEF could withstand Smith's team killing plays. Then when Smith went down and Troy Smith came in and won 3x as many games as Alex - with the same OL that was sooooooooo bad when Alex played and the same WR that were soooooo bad when Alex played and the same pass DEF that was soooo bad when Alex played .. so certainly there could not be ANY excuses for Alex, right? - but no, we had to listen to excuses about schedule - that surely Alex Smith would have won those games, too. I am so sick of excuses for this guy. I really don't care what the results are for the rest of the year, I just do not want to watch him play again. It is frustrating to me that the Broncos cut McD after 1-1/2 seasons and yet we are stuck with Singletary's idiocy until the end of 2010. Why can't we be so lucky to have an owner with balls?

Anyway, that is the big deal. Alex Smith is five long years of SUCK. Someone do the math.. could his first year, with a 1/11 TD/INT record be WORSE than Max Hall and Jimmy Clausen? Two guys who probably wont' get another chance .. and yet Alex Smith did, again and again and again. Think about that: 1 TD and ELEVEN INTs. And he remained the starter. HE SUCKS.

ETA: To be fair, there was one play where I enjoyed watching Alex Smith. That was during a preseason game a year ago where, in the midst of competition for his job, Alex Smith threw an INT. During the run back, Alex Smith made what is possibly the greatest return-TD saving tackle ever made by a QB. It was pure awesome. That's it. My one Alex Smith highlight.

Alex Smith can run the Fire Drill desperation offense. Smith fans will qualify his stats and effectiveness based on the desperation of said offense. The reason why Troy Smith is benched for Alex is that Alex can run the Fire Drill desperation offense better than Troy Smith can. Mike Johnson sucks as an OC. The 49er offense has been a mish mash of a passing offense whose QB's have poor read and recognition. It's either an all go or a dumpoff completion. This is so not 49er football. The problem is that if a York, who don't know anything about football, sees a meager improvement, they qualify it as a success. The 49ers have set historical lows on offense under the Yorks. Mike Singletary is a worse Head Coach than Mike Nolan. A big giant BWAH to think that Singletary would be swiped up before Gruden and Shanahan would. Head Coaches who were available had Denise and John waited before they threw out their Son to cover their screwups, claiming that Sing would reach the playoffs the next season. Now Jed is tweeting that they still have a shot at winning the Division. The 27 year old Team President tweeting winning the Division with 4 wins going into week 13. Good thing the SF Giants won the World Series. Congrats Jed. Peter Guber will win a Championship before you will.

No one is in a rush to, as they all have a history of jerking him off based on some great Senior Bowl soundbites.

I'll trade 8 points of completion percentage (or whatever the difference is) for T. Smith's willingness to look downfield and actually utilize some of the receiving talent this team has. There's no upside to going back to A. Smith - he's also inaccurate, and he's afraid to throw anything other than a screen pass to his RB, except for the rare occasion when he sees Davis running unimpeded down the middle of the field. T. Smith might get more accurate as he gets comfortable with the offense; Alex has repeatedly proven he can't be taught the things he needs to be an average or better QB in this league.

We look at the wins stats......you look at the fantasy stats.Well for all you fantasy oriented 49er followers, get ready for a heavy dose of Dixon after we lose this game.

I'm still a little confused, could Alex Smith be a sneaky play this week with Seattle on the road or is Seattle defense a sneaky play because of Alex Smith?

Seattle seems like a sneaky play since the 49ers are a bad team that are desperate enough to go with Alex Smith. I would not rank Seattle in the top 5 defenses this week or anything though.

 I do not ever want to see Alex Smith throw another pass wearing a Niners uniform. Troy Smith is miles better than Alex. At least he knows how to actually throw the ball deep.

Somebody stab Singletary. I just keep hoping the Gruden to SF rumor has some truth to it.

Singletary needs to be fired, stat. Not only does he make truly awful decisions that stink of desperation, the team plays sloppy and makes way to many mental errors and costly penalties.

I can appreciate that. Again, I think Alex Smith is pretty bad. I just think Troy Smith is even worse. I don't see this as a downgrade for the Niners. Troy Smith has looked pretty awful the last two games in my opinion.

You should watch Alex Smith with regularity. He's worse than Troy. Alex Smith once in a very great while puts together a good game. It seems he's okay when he just runs out there and plays without thinking. But it's incredibly rare he does that. He's really awful. He never looks downfield and tries to dump off the ball every single time. Troy Smith has a higher qb rating than Smith (82 vs. 75). Alex Smith has had years to get better and has always sucked. Troy Smith jumps out there and in the span of a month looks better. He *clearly* has more upside/potential AND he's actually playing better. Yet Singletary switches back? Inexcusably awful decision. The biggest reason I'm a Troy Smith fan (at least compared to Alex)? If Alex is the qb and the team falls behind 10+ points I assume the game is going to be a loss. If Troy is back there I actually think there's a chance they can score some points and still win. Troy has been soooo much better than Alex. The one area he's struggled in is he needs to learn to check down and not take a sack trying to make something happen. But in his five games as starter he's been better than Alex Smith...despite Alex having YEARS to show improvement.I think most Niner fans will agree we'll all be happy if Alex Smith never throws another pass in that uniform. The fact Singletary is putting him back in shows one of the many reasons he needs to be fired.

I have watched Alex but I defer to you being much closer to the situation obviously. :lmao: Again, I'm not trying to say that Alex Smith is any good because I think he sucks. I just think he sucks a little less than Troy Smith. I really thought Troy Smith looked pretty poor the last two games.Oh, and I agree the Niners need a new head coach.

Sitting on a stool in the corner is  David 'Pick me' Carr.

Singletary should beat the rush hour and leave now. He can take all the QB's with him.

I can't imagine why you'd think there's a chance Troy could come back from a 10-point deficit. He's never done it, and the games against Tampa and Green Bay were pretty awful. In fact he hasn't even scored a TD when the team has been down by 10; with the Niners were down by 10+, Niner opponents have outscored the Niners under Smith 20-3. Not that I think Alex Smith is an answer for anything.

That's true. The one thing Alex Smith is good at (other than INT-return-TD-saving tackles) is losing with pluck. When the Niners are down by 10 after one or two Alex Smith trademarked blunders, you can count on Alex Smith showing his trademarked signs of promise, driving downfield and pulling the team alllllmost within reach ... only to fall juuuuust short because of another Alex Smith trademarked blunder.(*)(*) Sometimes, usually when the total in-game blunders amount to 3+, another Niner player is involved in a blunder, too -- so Alex Smith excuse makers can cleverly pin the blame on the poor-quality team around Alex: "Alex Smith is a good QB on an average team!!! Alex Smith would have gone 5-0 if he'd played the same schedule Troy Smith did!!!"

It isn't just that Alex Smith isn't good. Alex Smith SUCKS. He is completely unwatchable in every game with the exception of a handful of plays -- usually when the game is out of reach -- when he shows promise. Alex Smith makes plays that CRUSH the Niners' chances to win the game. After several games of watching him show promise in the same game he destroys the team, it just gets frustrating and you want him off the field.Troy Smith, although not good, doesn't do that. The Tampa Bay loss and Green Bay loss were just complete Niner team failures in every way. You would be hard pressed to pin those games on Troy Smith. I'm telling you, if Alex Smith was playing in the Rams, Broncos, and maybe even the Cardinals game, Alex Smith would have found a way to do something completely horrific and game changing.

But again, I'm not exactly excited to see Troy Smith. I'm just excited to not have to watch Alex Smith.

As long as these 3 things exist in S.F. you can forget about winning 49ers football.

1. The YORKS

2. Mike Singletary

3. Alex Smith

I'm turning over in my grave.

You keep talking about the last 2 games, but Alex Smith has had twice as many YEARS as you say Troy has had bad games. That's the biggest key of course. Look, as a Seahawks fan I am beyond happy that Singletary has decided beyond all odds to actually start Alex instead of Troy, because i think it gives my favorite team a better chance to win. But looking at things from an unbiased view, I can't see how anyone, including Singletary, would think that playing Alex is better than playing Troy. Perhaps the biggest key to QB performance is playing time. Check out a player that everyone thinks will be an absolute STUD in the future, in Sam Bradford. Look at his numbers from his first 4 games, now compare those numbers to Troy Smith's first few games. Bradford had more INTs than TDs if my memory serves, his QB rating was't all that great, etc etc etc. Basically, Troy Smith will improve by leaps and bounds if he continues to get PT. For a guy basically in the first few games of his career he has looked very good actually. Alex Smith on the other hand has been a failure for YEARS and YEARS and YEARS, basically, there is no hope. With Troy, just from the eye test and taking into consideration his experience level, there is a lot of potential there. Given a year or two in a system with playing time and learning the offense, I think he can be a decent if not above average NFL QB. Alex on the other hand is quite atrocious with no chance of every becoming even a backup QB.

Troy Smith has had three bad games in a row; it just happens that the Niners won one of them handily, with Smith going 11/23 with 1 TD and 1 INT, and almost another fumble that would have put Arizona back in the game (overturned on review, but clearly a bad play by Troy).

But looking at things from an unbiased view, I can't see how anyone, including Singletary, would think that playing Alex is better than playing Troy.
Troy Smith has had three bad games in a row; it just happens that the Niners won one of them handily, with Smith going 11/23 with 1 TD and 1 INT, and almost another fumble that would have put Arizona back in the game (overturned on review, but clearly a bad play by Troy).
What's your point? Troy Smith is a bad quarterback. Alex Smith is worse. At least Troy has the excuse of only starting 5 games...and in those 5 games, no matter how bad he's been, he's STILL been better than Alex Smith. And Alex Smith has been starting for several years.

I think it's blindness to say that Troy Smith is better than Alex Smith. I mean, Troy is completing 52.4% of his passes and threw just 4 TDs in 5 games. He might have more potential, although that seems dubious. Really, the only thing Troy Smith has going for him is that the fans haven't seen him long enough to get disgusted at him.

The biggest reason I'm a Troy Smith fan (at least compared to Alex)? If Alex is the qb and the team falls behind 10+ points I assume the game is going to be a loss. If Troy is back there I actually think there's a chance they can score some points and still win.
Alright. So how has Troy performed when the Niners are down by 7?Don't worry, I'll answer for you: Niners have outscored their opponents 37-36 under Troy Smith when the Niners were down by 7+, and had a 2-2 W/L record.

Whereas, when your golden boy of "equal value," Alex Smith, was behind the helm, Niners were outscored by a staggering 54-32 and had a 0-4 W/L record - even with Alex Smith's garbage time TDs he still performed far worse than Troy.

So um.. yeah, I think I'd rather have Troy.

As for your next comment (emphasis added):

I think it's more than a little disingenuous for you to claim that forward pass - even if it had been a fumble, which it was not - "would have put Arizona back in the game." I'm not sure what your agenda is, but IMHO cherry-picking stats to make it seem that Troy performed worse than Alex Smith when Troy had 3x the wins and 1/3 the losses of Alex Smith and performed better in almost every meaningful QB stat except YPG and completion % AND brought the Niners back from deficits that Alex Smith would have simply lost with Alex Smith's trademark pluck is not the best way to demonstrate that agenda.ETA: Oh yeah, there was another QB category where Alex Smith performed better: garbage time production. That Tampa Bay game would have been a 7-21 loss with Alex Smith under center. Yay. Go Niner football. So glad to have Alex back!!!!

Side note: We've now watched two "lesser" QBs perform better than Alex Smith with the same freaking conditions Alex Smith had and people are STILL SAYING ALEX SMITH GIVES THE NINERS A BETTER CHANCE TO WIN. WTF is going on?? Why are people so entranced with Alex Smith?!!! Let me repeat - his first year as a starter he had ONE TD and ELEVEN INT. What QB gets another year as a starter after that? And he got FIVE. Each one with more excuses for why he SUCKED again. ARGH. Why won't he go away. I can't get over the seething hatred I have for Alex .. it began during the Atlanta game and just kept building.

Barrows posted this morning that he thinks this move is an indication that Mike Johnson convinced Singletary to go to a full-time spread offense with Gore hurt. We'll see.
