Alfonso Smith RB Ari (1 Viewer)

loose circuits

I like this guy a lot more than Larod Stephens-Howling. I had my eye on him last year, but he was buried on the depth chart. He has the physical tools- some people say his 40 was in the high 4.2's. There were positive reports last year about his play and work ethic during camp last year and now with Williams' injury he may get his shot. I waited to start a thread until after I got him in 2 of 3 dynasty leagues.

some info:

University of Kentucky RB Alfonso Smith didn’t have the college production that he wanted to. As a senior he rushed for just 245 yards and two touchdowns, but he got his chance to shine for NFL scouts at the Texas vs. the Nation Game.

Those same scouts then showed up at his Kentucky pro day and Smith wowed them with his workout and physical skills. He measured in at 6’1 ½”, 211 pound and ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.28 – 4.33 second range. He posted a 36” vertical jump and a 9’9” broad jump with 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Smith trained at Ignition in Cincinnati, Ohio to get ready for the pro day.

“I didn’t have the season I wanted so I had a lot to prove at the pro day. Right before the pro day started, I was nervous,” said Smith. “I knew I needed to have a good day to have a shot.”

With his size, speed, strength and ability to not only run outside and catch the football, but run between the tackles, Smith is one of the sleepers in this year’s NFL Draft. NFL teams are going to more of a two-back combination these days, so Smith hopes he can be a valuable asset to any NFL team.

NFL DRAFT SCOUT RISER: Alfonso Smith, RB, Kentucky: Smith ran for only 712 yards in his four years at Kentucky, but the 6-0, 211-pound senior put on a show for scouts at his pro day with 4.38 40, 36" vertical, 19 reps
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1116949a few articles from cards web-site that talk about his opportunity and some of his past:

Alfonso Smith is a candidate to replace Ryan Williams in a running back role after Williams' season-ending knee injury suffered Friday night.

In a quiet and nearly empty locker room late Friday night, Alfonso Smith returned from his own stint in the training room to get dressed for the long plane flight home from Green Bay, realizing his professional life had just changed.

Smith, who was back and forth on the Cards’ practice squad and roster last season, suddenly went from possibly cut to possibly playing a big role for the team in 2011 once rookie Ryan Williams was carted off with a knee injury during the game.

“I feel like I don’t have a choice,” Smith, a 6-foot-1, 208-pound speedster from Kentucky. “I have to be there for my teammates. I’ve got to step up and make plays. I will be ready whenever they call my number.”

Coach Ken Whisenhunt delivered the expected news Saturday afternoon, that Williams indeed had a ruptured right patellar tendon and that his season was over. Williams is expected to have surgery early this week, start rehabilitation as soon as possible, and Whisenhunt said the hope is to have him back by training camp next year.

Whisenhunt called Smith a “viable candidate” to move into the running back mix. Beanie Wells will be the starter, and Whisenhunt said Wells had more on his shoulders this season regardless of whether Williams would have remained healthy. LaRod Stephens-Howling will also get some time, but at his size, he can’t fill Williams’ role.

The Cardinals will have to add a back, he said, but to what degree that new player will be – whether it’s just a camp body to take some practice reps or a legitimate candidate to play – is yet to be determined.

Whisenhunt also said that could be an ongoing process, meaning the Cards could sign someone now and make another move later when teams make their roster cuts heading into the regular season.

“It has to be the right fit,” Whisenhunt said. “We have a pretty good chemistry with our team and that group.”

Whisenhunt referenced a moment in the 2010 preseason finale, when Smith had to decide to either go out for a screen or move downfield depending on a blitz that may come. Smith read it right, made the catch and a big gain, which helped cement the win.

Smith works hard in practice and has speed, Whisenhunt said, “but I have been most impressed with the work he has put in to understand our offense.”

Smith had 33 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries against the Packers. Smith also can play special teams.

“My feeling is just to take advantage of every opportunity I am given,” Smith said. “If it weren’t for the Man upstairs, I wouldn’t have the opportunity. I wouldn’t have done what I did out there (in Green Bay).

FLAGSTAFF – Minor, nagging injuries cut into Alfonso Smith’s career at Kentucky, enough so that he didn’t finish college the way he had wanted.

“It was a hard time going through my senior year,” said Smith, the Cardinals’ newest addition to the running back mix. “I didn’t get the carries, I didn’t get a lot of pub, and that stuck with me. I have a chip on my shoulder. I am out here to prove it.”

Smith should get the chance. With rookie Ryan Williams out for the season after rupturing his patella tendon, Smith is the early entry into the replacement sweepstakes. The Cards did add a running back to the roster Monday, but it was undrafted rookie William Powell, who was with the Cards early in camp before being cut.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said the Cardinals will continue to look at who comes available. Any potential Williams replacement may still be on another team’s roster, with significant roster cuts coming after the next two preseason games.

“I don’t see a sense of panic at this particular time,” Whisenhunt said.

The Cards do need someone to step into the void, however, and Smith wants to be that guy.

“It stinks that Ryan had to get hurt, because he is like a brother to me,” Smith said. “I know I have a big opportunity in front of me.”

Smith called himself a straight-line runner, but he wants to try and become more well-rounded, given the circumstances. Quarterback Kevin Kolb gave Smith an endorsement Monday, saying Smith has “always looked great to me.”

“We all have great confidence in him,” Kolb added.

I like him. From Cincy, so I managed to see a couple of his games at UK. At times, he looked special. IIRC, he just couldn't stay healthy.

I posted about him in the "Deep Sleepers" thread for rookies last year. His measurables stacked up against any RB in last year's class. Not sure how a team didn't take a chance on him in the 7th round?

In that same thread, Lammey expressed how much he loved him at the Texas vs The Nation game.

I like Smith as a deep sleeper - but NOT for dynasty leagues. Look his best road to playing time this year is Beanie Wells not taking advantage of his opportunity or getting injured again - if that happened Smith might be in a good situation (depending on who the Cardinals add). But that might get him decent playing time/production this year - NO way even if he was good the Cardinals wouldn't draft a running back very early - likely one with bigger upside and fewer health issues - so he might work for redraft this year but I doubt he is even an RB3 going into 2012

anyone you can pluck off waivers who can make an impact is a sleeper for dynasty. Only think stopping him is if they bring in someone from the outside that takes his spot. Kid has tons of untapped potential. If it gets to next years draft and he's proven he can play I doubt the cards will draft a RB. They'll still have Wells for 700k in 2012 and be hoping Ryan Williams can get back into form

guy looked good on the edges, but he needs to gain some strength to run between the tackles.

was tough to carry chester, LSH, and Alfonso so I dropped them before the games yesterday thinking Beanie would play, whoops. I wonder if LSH will take the 2nd string gig back. Obviously Chester looked as washed up as he did in Chicago.

Since this thread, it's funny how Alfonso has done a full circle. He sat out the next 2 preseason games because a hammy. However, it took a LSH and Wells injury and he gets his shot looking half way decent in his first game action. he's more of a RBBC member which is just the nature of the biz anyways

Any Kentucky homers or big college football fans know anything about him?

Rotoworld slams him, but they've been wrong before.

Alfonso Smith is expected to start in Week 8 if Beanie Wells (knee) can't go.

Smith is a 2010 undrafted free agent out of Kentucky and replacement-level talent at best. With Wells sidelined in Week 3, Smith rushed 17 times for 54 yards and added three catches for 21 yards. That's about the ceiling of what we'd expect against the Ravens this week, especially after coach Ken Whisenhunt said, "It will be a little bit of back-by-committee," when asked about replacing Wells. LaRod Stephens-Howling and Chester Taylor will also get work.

Of course week 8 against Baltimore is tough sledding, but the schedule lightens up after that. Smith could be a good multi-week play as the Cardinals are not really saying what is wrong with Beanie, and he's not known as the fastest healer. Whisenhunt also has a long history of guys not playing if they can't make it through practice.

He gets his number called again and maybe 2 starts are coming. Hopefully, a little seasoning will benefit this guy. I do think there is a tiny chance there is some Willie Parker type upside to this kid. Gonna have a difficult test with Ngata, Cody, and Lewis in the middle of Baltimore's D. Although it should be a good assessment for him. Maybe they will attack the edges of Baltimore's D cause that's likely where they would find success. If the Ravens play offense like they did last night, then it should be a grinder

Who's starting him week 8? I'm doing a wait and see approach versus Baltimore, but will start him week 9 against STL as long as he doesn't face plant this weekend. :football:
