AMBER alert: Vernon Gholston (1 Viewer)

I'm having search issues with the new format but, I saw one quote from Andy talking about what a Beast this guy would be in a 3-4 defense.....It happens... It's easy for everyone to jump in now and the jokes are a riot - But, THIS is exactly why I love the Mocks Andy does and all the discussion BEFORE the fact.... People say why even bother mocking and trying to predict the draft - WHY? to get the opinions in writing now so when we look back we can see how outrageous a pick was or how ridiculous a team was....
Just remember that I either repackage what I read from other people or completely make stuff up.

:bag:Fine and good..... Just don't pick on the Jets for this. I sent Tannenbaum your quote at the time.Frankly when people like to laugh at draft picks I'd like to see their comments PRE-DRAFT - Or IMO, beat it.And to be honest, I can go back and dig up posts where I was down on and highly skeptical of VG yet, I STILL won't kill the Jets given the concensus....I did give the Jets the benefit of doubt AFTER the draft because their whole Process at the time was about finding FOOTBALL PLAYERS and I assumed VG blew them away in interviews and the stuff "we" didn't see...

I can't remember the specifics, but I do remember that in the draft where Gholston was taken, there were "7 sure things" and according to the talent evaluators, there was a drop off after that. The Pats happened to like Mayo, but there were rumors, they wanted Gholston. Not sure whether that was smoke and mirrors, but as it happened, the "better" players were all selected before Gholston. Looking at career AV, you have to go into the 2nd round to find someone worse than Gholston at this point. I don't like the pick and while I know many said he should not fall beyond the 1st round, guys like Mangini and Tanny were paid to make better decisions.

So is Mike Mayock..... The hardest thing in this whole thing is looking into a man's soul. There was no doubting anything else about VG - His College coach even came out and vouched for him. After his Jr year he was looked at as one of the best defensive players in the game. IMO, this pick was all about the interview and VG must have really did a good sales job. But, To me, this pick is NOTHING like the pick of Dewayne Robertson - and here is why:The Dewayne Robertson draft was loaded with 6 or 7 DEFENSIVE TACKLES, let alone talent.... The Jets could have sat back and just grabbed the last one left (Ty Warren - thanks). But, talk about Combine Warrior. Dewayne Robertson was not given the praise Gholston was for 2 seasons prior to the draft. Dewayne Robertson is the guy who came out of no where and was the Combine Stud....That alone is killer But, the jets also Traded up and used TWO 1st round picks on this guy.....TWO!!!!!!! People can talk about VG as an all time Bust all they want... to me Dewayne Robertson is in a class by himself when you look at it from a Team standpoint or just a bad decision.I think if we analyze it, the 2003 Robertson draft was a much better draft. When VG was picked it was pretty much no man's land at the time..... When Robertson was picked there were a lot of guys highly praised AND the Jets could have had tweo of em... That draft is loaded with name talent. That 2003 Draft looks awesome.... and the Jets spent 2 picks on Robertson. UGGGH!!!!

PFT had an interesting blurb:

The news this week that the Jets will cut defensive end Vernon Gholston has given us a couple of opportunities to examine just what a monumental draft bust Gholston was.

In fact, Gholston, taken sixth overall in 2008, may have been the biggest bust of any defensive end ever selected in the NFL draft.

According to Michael Salfino of the Wall Street Journal, Gholston is the only defensive end drafted in the top 10 to fail to record a single sack since the NFL started counting sacks in 1982.

Prior to Gholston, the least productive Top 10 defensive end the NFL had seen was Reggie Rogers, who was taken seventh overall by the Lions in 1987. Rogers recorded two sacks in two seasons before the Lions cut him after he killed three people while driving drunk.

I heard on the Doug Gottleib show that Gholston missed out on a $9 million elevator clause in his contract because he failed to record either one sack or one fumble recovery lawt season. Doug suggested at that point, don't you offer the guy next to you a couple mil to set you up for a sack or something?

I'm curious to see how his career unfolds. It wouldn't surprise me to see him succeed elsewhere. He lacks great burst, but he's incredibly athletic. He's got one of the best bodies on the whole team - he's still in ridiculous shape -- and he's become a pretty tough player against the run. He's not big enough to be an elite 3-4 DE or fast enough to be an elite 3-4 OLB. He may end up becoming a very good LDE player against the run for some 4-3 team.

People naturally want to focus on his lack of big plays, and they should. But Gholston in '10 contributed significantly more than Gholston in '08 and '09. He was probably an average defensive end in '10, whereas he was a nonfactor his first couple of years. He needs to develop more, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him recover and play well for another team. He's strong, fast for his size, tough and seems committed to getting better. I think he just had a much steeper learning curve than people expected. And it wouldn't shock me if he landed back with the Jets.
