Andrew Luck future years (1 Viewer)

It is my understanding he would have had to clear waivers if he came back this year and we all know that he wouldn't, but I believe the Colts would still own his rights after this year.  Is that correct?

That's what I understand.  The Colts did not request repayment of his bonus money, which means they retain his rights.  I think the Colts would actually have to release him and then he would go through waivers.

I think there is a good chance he comes back next season.  I don't think the Colts would be so generous and give away 25 million if they thought there was zero chance he comes back.  25 million was their insurance policy to make sure he comes back for them if he does return.   That's an expensive insurance policy if you think the odds of a return are very low.

Furthermore, if he thought he needed at least a year off, his only real option was to retire.  He couldn't simply say that he just needed another year off and go on IR and still avoid the pressure and stress he was putting on himself to get back out their for teammates and fans.  In this scenario and hearing his thought process, retiring with returning at some point when fully healthy as a real possibility does not seem unlikely.

It's not even out of the question that behind closed doors he and the Colts agreed to this.  Retire for now, and be welcomed back if he decides to return when mental and physical health restored.  That would be the best possible move from a PR standpoint and would allow Luck to avoid the pressure to get healthy.

He's most likely done.  When someone retires unexpectedly fans have a hard time understanding, from Calvin Johnson to Barry Sanders to Gronk as the ones that come to mind,  I'm sure there are others.  But seems they almost always stay retired as media and fans continue to speculate and think they're going to return.

He made $109M on his NFL contracts alone, not including any endorsements or other ancillary income like merchandising, books, media gigs, etc.

He dealt with some serious injuries in his career. He is no doubt aware of CTE and the concussion risk associated with football.

By all accounts, he is a smart guy. I really don't see the motivation for him to come back. He will never have to work another day in his life if he doesn't want to. I expect when he retired, he retired for good.

Especially as that same media offers him money to do network stuff. Much easier money than risking your future health.

I don’t think Luck is media material.  Have you seen him?  Or heard him talk?  He’s no Peyton Manning personality wise.

He may not turn out to be, but he is a lot smarter than many talking heads today. They could use some more smarts.
Oh, I don’t doubt how smart he is, but he’s hard to look at and doesn’t seem to have much of a personality.  He should shave his beard, or at least trim it off his neck.  He also smiles too much when he talks.  His teeth are too big.

Radio would work well for him.

Andrew's first child was born a week ago.  Maybe wanting to be home for that process had something to do with retiring.  Maybe in a few months it'll give him motivation to unretire to get out of the house.

have you seen his girlfriend?  :porked:
She isn't a supermodel but she is an 8 out of 10.  It cracks me up when a guy criticizes a clearly hot babe as being ugly.  And she is a former gymnast.  She has muscles in places you didn't even know muscles existed.
