Android apps (1 Viewer)

So after years of carrying just my blackberry (for work...I really hate phones), we got a deal on these Samsung S5 phones that I couldn't pass up. I am ditching the phone at home and replacing it with a smart phone. I've had an iPod for a couple years now, but this is my first smart phone. Anything the noob needs to know?
yes. it's not a blackberry. you will be charging this device EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

also... the screen will break if you arent very careful.

all things I learned the hard way leaving blackberry

oh.... and you're going to miss the physical keyboard

If the battery life bothers you pick up a spare battery with one of the separate chargers on Amazon. Much more convenient than a USB brick and keeps you from being tied to a plug all day if you forget to charge it the night before or use it heavily early in the day.

Get a case. As soulfly mentioned modern smartphones are FRAGILE.

Swiftkey3 app will help bigtime with making the transition to a virtual keyboard.

I've never had a smartphone screen that broke and I don't treat it very carefully.

coming from blackberry's 2" screen to something around 5" means having to take extra care/use protective cases.

my blackberry i never thought twice about breaking. ive seen too many newer phones w destoryed screens to not take more care/buy a case

I went from iPhones to a Droid Maxx and haven't had a case for either and haven't had any cracked screens. I don't throw it around, but I don't do anything special either.

Yeah....my wife learned this the hard way and I've already felt the pains of the "keyboard" with my iPod. I now, almost exclusively, use the microphone for any of that kind of thing. I have a friend of a friend who has all the cases etc and he gave me probably $400 worth of "stuff" from cases to screen protectors to ear pieces.

have a two year old....pretty sure short of wrapping it in bubble wrap I'm gonna have to pay a little closer attention. Charging's gonna be my issue. I'm guessing it will be charging every time I need to use it ;)

Chargers are dirt cheap on eBay...I've got one in just about every room in my house, ready to go. I even have an outlet directly behind my couch, so I have a charger plugged into it so whenever I'm on the couch watching TV or whatever, I plug my phone in and set it on top of the backrest of the couch. Whenever I leave the house I have a full charge or close to it.

Yeah...it's not the technology, it's me :D My brain needs to be trained...harder said than done. I'm used to going a week or more without having to worry about it.

I'm sure nobody cares, but I played around with folders a bit and activated the appbar...I'm gonna roll with this home screen and see how I like it. I've got 20 apps in the center folder labeled "Apps", and extra, less used apps are in the app bar I can open from the left. Its a much cleaner look. I also installed muzei wallpaper app but need to download something other than the art package that comes with it. Can't decide which clock/weather setup I wanna use.

Commish, if it's an S5 you have just get a spare battery. MUCH easier than having chargers littered everywhere and always being tethered to the wall.

@prosopis....settings motions and gestures.

Some of the stuff works good some doesbt. I can check my time etc without hitting a button.... the keep on I'm viewing setting seems ok.

Also at first I thought it was a gimmicks but sbeam is great. Wife and I share pics that way instead of texting
I found it in settings but I have yet to see where I can use it. Do you get a hand icon in the upper bar when you can use it? The info says that should happen but it has not happened for me yet. How do you check your time with out hitting a button?

Unless you have a hard case, which is a PITA to swap batteries with in a hurry..and Lol @ littered...one in kitchen on microwave, one in living room behind couch, one in each bedroom, one in each vehicle. It doesn't NEED to be charging all the time, but if Im home and on my couch, it might as well be plugged in while I'm sitting there.I do have a spare battery I take with me when I go fishing, to concerts, or anywhere I think I may need it.

under each selection has sub selections. Make sure they are on. If Air gesture is on There needs or be some light but with the phone off if I hold my hand above the sensor. (ONE of the small circles top front of phone) the time will appear with missed emails icon battery usage etc. The phone needs to be sitting on a table flat.I assume s5 and note 3 have same options for the most part. I know my wife's s4 has that option

No idea what case you're using, but I use this one which has protected my super fragile s3 from literally being punted across a parking lot (it fell out of my pocket while running, hit my foot, and flew 20 feet through the air before sliding across the asphalt) and takes all of 1 second to get on/off.

I have a body glove hard case with the built in screen cover/protector.Its a 3 piece case where the front and back snap together over the phone, and a rubber piece that goes over the back/sides. Its rock solid but its kind of a pain to take off. It came with my phone so I didn't have to shop for one or I probably would have bought an otter box.

Agree.

There are lots of decent Muzei sources. I toy'd with a few but like the stock art one the best.

The case I was given (otter box maybe?) isn't like this, though the one on my iPod and you're right, it's a pain. What I've been given slides in the case pretty easily then he gave me this gel like screen protector also. Get the phone today, we'll see how this goes.

Does anyone have the new Facebook app? I saw they redesigned the UI, but both my Moto X and Nexus 7 haven't been updated yet.

Anyone have a live wallpaper they like?

I am currently using: Liquid Cloud
Muzei
Tried it yesterday, zero interest in the blurred art.
It doesn't have to be art. It can be your gallery or other plug ins (I have 500px and NASA pic of the day installed as well). Pretty sure you can get everything from hot chicks to various cats on rotation.

If you double tap, it unblurs. You can also set the % blur in the options. You can set the update frequency as well.

ETA: Article w/ some popular Muzei extensions

There a ton. Just search 'Muzei' in the play store, or look around for a good top 10 list. A good half of the sites with lists like that are blocked at my office. Also, see the "ETA" in the post above your last post.

Ok now i love it. thanks !

ive always avoided live wallpapers as i thought they were a big battery drain. is that not the case?
Some are, it depends. If its something with a lot of moving parts, then yes. If its something that swaps out static images every so often, then not really.

Thanks for the Muzei rec. Big art fan, love the app.

Also, Textra and Transparent clock and weather.

Nice new face on my HTC One.

So I've got AOSB ROM installed and running...Android 4.4.2. Pretty slick. Had to side load a few apps because I didn't like the newer versions (Google Maps, Facebook, etc), but overall I'm pretty happy with it and will keep it for a while. So far I'm not missing TouchWiz at all, and my phone is running faster than it has in a looong time. Very snappy now that all the bloat is gone. Also, Clean Master hasn't popped up once yet, and before I flashed this ROM it would pop up every 4 hours or so. There's definitely a lot of freed up memory now.

I wish I could figure out how to take a screenshot though, the home/power button trick isn't working, and Ive even installed a few screenshot apps but none of them have worked.
Try home and volume down. That is becoming a more standard option lately.
Tried it and every other combo I could think of last night...no dice...I asked the developer at XDA, waiting for a reply.
Ha! Found it. In this ROM I can add options to the power button. So now when I hold it I can choose between shut down, reboot, screenshot, etc. Sweet.

I just miss the quick swipe to left for immediate bookmarks and to the right for add-ons like text size or desktop toggle. Also the jump to the top arrow.

Touchpal X is worthwhile. I don't like typing on the screen, but swiping usually allows for faster typing. This is the best swipe keyboard I've found so far.

Yeah I see that....they seem to be "system" kinds of apps though. That's like the iPods. I just tuck them away in a place I won't ever look. I created a junk folder and stuck them there.
