Anthony Bourdain dead at 61 (1 Viewer)

We worry about those we see struggling. This should show us you never know and to be kind to everybody.
This is what I was always talking about when I pleaded with people to step back and see the big picture in Rok's thread. More than one person asked me exactly what I thought the big picture was or what I meant when I mentioned "the impact on this board." This was it.

New Jersey was on last night. I've been everywhere he went.  Related to everything he said.

Almost made New Jersey sound romantic.

Happened to walk by Las Halles, his old restaurant a couple times this week.  It closed in 2016.  There’s a shrine there with letter from fans, flowers, booze and trinkets people left. Made me really sad.  Such a paradox with this guy.  Lived at such an electric level, so much to live for, so much living in his perceptions and ability to connect with people.  Something that can’t be answered, but makes me wonder what this guy possibly could have been experiencing when he took that action.
Had no idea Les Halles was his. Went by it a couple times this week too...almost ran over a couple of people walking backwards into the street taking photos of the memorial...lots of flowers and notes.

Exactly. Yet I found out I was in the final 4 of idiots on another board for engaging with rok and trying to help him last year. Nice, huh. People who bash others have serious issues.

cockroach, I don't know you at all.  But....You didn't like him because he called out snob dbags?  Hmmm.....
Through my lense Bourdain is the dbag (my nickname for him for years has been Douchy Bourdain).  In this instance it's not about the beer but the hypocrisy inhim not wanting to be told how to live/enjoy life, then telling others how they should in the next line.

I find it hilarious that he "hates hipsters" too.... As all true hipster types do.

He was exhausted. Between traveling constantly for work, shuttling back and forth to/from Italy/Europe to be with Argento,  making sure he spent time in NYC to be with his daughter, his jujitsu training, writing more books, writing/editing each episode, running his publishing imprint, promoting his various works, and planning future episodes, I imagine his mind was simply always on. He's stated that he did his best to avoid the version of himself that lies in bed all day, smokes pot, and watched tv, but I'm wondering if he shouldn't have taken one day every month to do exactly that.
I wasn't a fan of Bourdain. I didn't hold contempt like cr above, but I dismissed him in the early aughts when in his own words he relentlessly mocked Emeril and then moved on to a few other Food Network Stars.  To me he was petty and jealous and tried too hard to be cool. I hate that quality (trying to be cool) in a chef, movie, musician, etc. It isn't genuine. So I never read or watched his stuff.

I've been reading about him through stories written while he was alive. Seems there's more to learn for me there than in the eulogizing. I went back to the feud with Emeril. A few years passed and Bourdain is co-hosting a roast of Batali with Emeril. He explained his beef face to face. He didn't get Emeril. How could Emeril keep performing for the barking seals in studio audiences after he had so much success? If he was so successful, he'd never wear socks again. You'd never see him. He'd be enjoying the life of leisure in a tropical paradise. He would never be a dancing monkey for a greedy network if he had Emeril's empire -- the restaurants, the publishing, the product lines, the tv presence. Why keep whoring yourself out at such great pace?

He gained respect for Emeril with the answer, and they became friendly with each other. Emeril said without any real forsight, he'd become a huge ship. The passengers were in the restaurants, at the publishing house, in the recording studio and in the product line factories. If he went down it would not only hurt too many people he cared for but so many he didn't even know. There was an unspoken contract to keep the ship sailing in the most profitable direction. That's why you keep doing it.

Bourdain respected the answer but he his response was telling. He said, "So you're f###ed." Emeril agreed. If you made it this far, read what I quoted. Bourdain became a ship.

Thanks for this.

I haven't seen every episode. Nonetheless, we don't always know what's really going on in someone's head. Families are often shocked. And even if someone seems well now, you never know.

An example I gave awhile back in the suicide thread was of my bros good friend. Everyone gets busy with their own lives. Bro hadn't spoken to him in over a month. One evening he called my bro saying he's doing well and has never been happier. A couple weeks later after a neighbor reported mail piling up when he knew he was home, they found his body. Dod was estimated to be the day after he called my bro. The guilt of not actually going to see him haunts bro to this day 5 years out.

Whether you know, suspect or have no clue, be kind. Everyone has their struggles from the rich to poor. You can't compare struggles for what seems mild may not be to that person.

That's my take away.

Pretty sure it was bought and is being renovated.

that ending of tonights parts unknown has me choked up... very haunting stuff post mardi gras

I can only help had had a bad medical diagnosis that we aren't privy to, which I mean, I don't know, I don't know if that justifies suicide but it would certainly rationalize it

I started watching one of my DVR'd episodes a day or 2 after he died, made about 5 minutes.  Still haven't gone back to them yet.

Report todat that he was worth $1.2m, $400k or so of which was liquid.  Million dollar mortgage on top of that.

Not exactly bankrupt, but for a guy whose headlined TV shows for at least a decade and be had multiple best sellers, I’d have thought it hard to be worth less than 10x that.  Hell, put your name on a grill or a line of kitchen knives.

Guessing he spent a lot of what should have been a nice nest egg.  But maybe he didn’t want that or care.
Yup, that's not much money when you consider his fame.

Maybe. But he piloted his ship in some new and interesting ways. He transcended the food world. He wasn't out shlocking spice rub.

I have a friend now deceased that met him years ago. She was a pretty accomplished chef in my area and felt he was kind of an arrogant ######## and was dismissiive of women. Kind of have to blend an opinion I trust with the connection I felt through his shows. It's complicated but I felt what he was doing breaking down barriers between cutures was incredible work.

What's that line? "Do I contradict myself. Very Well. I am large. I contain multitudes." Or something to that affect.

I'm thinking this may have played a role in state of mind.  Maybe he was just blowing it all and was like better have something to leave kid.

Something seems very off here.  It's hard to spend money when you work all the time.  He never stopped.  And his travel costs I'm sure were absorbed by the production companies. His books alone...just perplexed.

The majority of his assets had been placed in a trust for his daughter.
OK, that makes sense.  The articles I read mentioned the 1.2 million going into a trust but it makes perfect sense he would have already set up another trust and kept a little separate to live on.

I didn't dig, but saw the same brief headline about it... I figured the 1.2 was liquid(ish) and bequeathed to his daughter, while the bulk of his estate was locked up in a separate trust(s).

I don't think CNN is neccessarily paying huge money for a weekly show, even as succesful and high rated as it is.  Couldn't be more than 2 million a year I'd bet.

None of these chefs give up their restaurants, which I think the promotion of appearing on tv really drives them, most have mulitple and I don't think Bourdain had any.

Argento really skated in all of this.

Skated how?

Not much was made of her making out with another dude two days before Bourdain killed himself.  Bourdain is responsible for himself of course, but I would term this coincidence at a minimum newsworthy
If someone kills themselves because their girlfriend made out with another guy, they still have a serious mental illness.

Not much was made of it because there wasn’t much to make of it. As far as we all know she had nothing to do with him killing himself.

Look around man. Plenty of stories about how terrible she was to Tony. Doesn't make her responsible but it does make her an #####.

You have absolutely no idea what their relationship was like. Maybe she told him it was over and he couldn’t accept it?  Maybe she cheated on him? Either way there is nothing for her to skate on in regards to him killing himself. That’s an absolutely absurd viewpoint.

Bourdain went out with a scorching last interview

Interview

In the interview, conducted in February and published Sunday, Bourdain slammed Bill Clinton's handling of his sexual misconduct allegations

He also condemned Clinton's wife Hillary for her role in 'destroying' the women

Bourdain, one of the most outspoken male supporters of the #MeToo movement, said he would have liked to see the producer 'beaten to death in his cell'

He also touched on politics in the Trump-era saying he would compromise his principles for some  'f**king competency'

Bourdain also bizarrely said Jared Kushner's eyebrows appeared 'manscaped' and said he 'was a born snitch'

:lmao: “born a snitch”

Wow. He had to be high or drunk during that interview. He said some whack stuff.

Just got back from a couple weeks in Europe that culminated with three days in Dublin. I hit several locations that Bourdain recommended on his episode of “the layover” in Dublin:

Roma II: take away chipper. Was solid but unspectacular

The Long Hall Pub: Excelent authentic Victorian era pub. Had several pints and a glass of RedBreast 15 here.

The real hook was visiting John Kavanaugh The Gravediggers pub on our final evening in town. This was a incredible out-of-the-way place that is Ireland’s oldest family owned pub.

The owner Ciaran Kavanagh (who was featured in the show) Happened to sit at my table earlier in the afternoon (we chatted about his guiness handling/process), but then later waved me and my girlfriend over to his table where he sat with two elderly (60’s and 80’s) Irish gentlemen…

We all bull####ted for a couple hours about everything from Irish history, Guinness, Memphis barbecue, etc... but we spent a good bit of time talking about Anthony Bourdain.

I mentioned he looked a bit depressed and that final season of the layover, and he agreed but he seemed a bit troubled, but opened up a bit after a few pints.  He definitely said he felt like a person who is battling depression and demons. Led to a great talk about mental illness and such. Amazing evening and the highlight of my Dublin trip for certain. Was nice to chat with someone who knew Tony.

Cool anecdote. No sarcasm.

Saw Roadrunner last night and really enjoyed it. It kept the focus on Anthony Bourdain, the man, when it could have easily lost itself and devolved into a clip show. David Chau and Josh Homme were amazing interviews. I was pretty intoxicated, but that made it easier to sob through the final 20 minutes without caring what the other people in the theater thought of me.

I miss him.

I gotta go see this.  I assume you mean David Chang?

Doesn't seem to be aging well.  Though I'm skeptical of the narrative turning here a little too fast.
