Antwan Odom carted off the field this morning, later seen on crutches with a boot.

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Bengals couldn't get out of the first practice of the season Monday morning without suffering what appeared at first blush to be a major injury.

Right end Antwan Odom, the richest free-agent in Bengals' history, hobbled away from the complex on crutches with ice strapped to his left foot, which was in a boot.. No report was immediately issued and head coach Marvin Lewis said only he had gone for tests.

GEORGETOWN, KY. -- Toward the end of this morning's practice, high-priced defensive end Antwan Odom was taken off the field in a cart. He sustained a left ankle injury, and later left the locker room on crutches with his left ankle in a protective.

"I don't know," he said when asked about his condition. "I'm going to find out now."

Who is his most likely backup? Frostee Rucker?
Strictly going by the depth chart, yes. But between injuries and lack of special teams talent, he's hardly ever seen first team competition. If this is a major thing, you might see the team move Geathers to the right side and put Fanene at left end on running downs. Or they may give Eric Henderson and Rucker the first shot at the competition.

Current reports are of an ankle or foot sprain, but the severity isn't known. I'm sure something official should be out soon.

(Rotoworld) Bengals coach Marvin Lewis revealed Monday that RE Antwan Odom has been diagnosed with a foot sprain and has no timetable to return.

Analysis: While this is seemingly better news than a fracture or high ankle sprain, Odom could still be out awhile, especially if it's a Lisfranc sprain. Cincinnati opens the regular season on September 7 at Baltimore, giving Odom about five weeks to get ready. Frostee Rucker would probably start if Odom can't.

The team is now expecting Odom to be ready for the regular season. The list of major injuries under-reported by the Bengals as week-to-week issues that keep players out months is long. Rich Braham's bruised shin was actually a tibial fracture that ended his career. Ahmad Brooks' groin pull was a torn muscle that eventually landed him on IR. Chris Perry was theoretically month-to-month. He missed two years.

Be very wary here. Should the pattern hold, you'll be hearing about Odom's Lisfranc fracture in October when he finally goes on IR. :goodposting:

But now it appears they have dodged at least a season-ending injury. Right end Antwan Odom, the richest free-agent in Bengals history, has suffered what head coach Marvin Lewis called simply "a foot sprain." Lewis said Monday night that tests on Odom's foot came back negative and that he expects Odom to be ready for the regular season opener September 7 at Baltimore.

As the Bengals prepared for Monday night's practice, Odom rode to the locker room in a cart. Wearing a Reds cap, he still had the crutches and the boot.

"They're saying to take it day-to-day," said Odom, who also hasn't been given a timetable.

good stuff as usual, jene

:excited: I am though, willing to give Rucker a chance this year. He seems determined to make an impact, and though I was never really big on him coming out of college, I did like what I saw on some limmited snaps late last season.

Metatarsals are the main bones in the midfoot between the toes and the ankle/heel bones. Fifth metatarsal lives behind the pinky toe bones. If legit, this means a Lisfranc injury is off the table. This is a broken foot until proven otherwise. Though they may involve walking boots from time to time, sprains and strains don't involve bones. We won't know how severe this injury is since the Bengals will never release whether or not surgery was involved.Depending on healing time and how exciting the original injury was, it's a 4-8 week injury.

Any word from cincy regarding how they have shuffled the line?
Rotating Frostee Rucker with Jonathan Fanene. I'd guess Fanene is going to get a full series of early downs relatively often, with Rucker playing on all passing downs. Rucker probably gets 70% of the snaps.

I suppose the absolute worst case scenario is a specific 5th metatarsal fracture (a Jones fracture) that doesn't heal well initially, requiring surgery after a couple of weeks or more. I'd think that'd be extremely unlikely in the NFL setting, since most of these injuries end up with the most aggressive treatment possible (i.e. surgical screws and pins) if the decision is close. A delayed surgery would essentially reset the recovery timetable.Worst case scenario here probably is that he returns before he's fully healed and either re-injures or has a compensatory soft tissue injury. Either way, I wouldn't expect him to be at full strength (assuming the injury is a broken bone) until some time early in the regular season.
