My air contioning unit has been acting up, just had it looked at

Need a replacement coil

Dude told me it was gonna be 3800 bucks

It's one unit for a two story 3100 sq ft home.  It's  7 years old and I have had a problem with it before.  Guy told me any replacement parts for this particular model are going to be pricey since it's a higher end unit.

I'm thinking about just buying 2 new separate units.  It's just a couple Grand more than replacing the damn coil.

Thoughts?

I'm a service manager for an AC company here in KC.

First question is: Is it the coil for your outdoor unit or your A-coil?

2. Where are you located?

3. What brand of equipment do you have?

$3800 for an indoor coil on a 7 year old unit is stupid. Call another company.

PM me the model and serial number of your coil. I can check if it's under warranty. It may have a 10 year warranty. Oh, and by the way, York systems usually are pretty easy to get parts.

Tell that company to pound sand. PM me their name as well. I'll do some research on them.

I just got my AC repaired (3rd year in a row!). There was a refrigerant leak that they had to repair and then fill the system up again.

Not looking forward to replacing this 5 ton, R22 system when it finally goes kaput.

I replaced the blower motor controller myself after after the repair company couldn't get the controller alone. Thankfully they installed a 3/4 hp motor to run continuously while I ordered the part online. I like these guys because they don't try to upsell me and let me look over their shoulder and ask questions while they work.

The coil is actually 3400 btw.  The other 400 is the other stuff.  But yeah it's high

Ok.

An indoor coil not under warranty should be $1700 or so. Max.

Your tech is kind of shooting himself in the foot. If you have higher end York equipment, most of those coils have a ten year warranty. You would have to pay labor, but that repair is about 4 hours.

In your area, the labor rate should be between 140 and 200 an hour for a reputable company. So worst case scenario you have 800 in labor. Plus maybe a little more for freon costs if necessary. So a warranty coil should be around  thousand bucks.

That company is part of the One Hour corporation. They are a franchise, which means they are paying a percentage to the home company. Which means their prices will be higher.

I would call someone else. And definitely send me the model and serial number of that coil. I will be happy to look that up for you. And if you have a copy of the service ticket, I can give you my email addy and you can send it to me.

I just sent it to you

Give me you email and I will forward

At first glance that coil is in an air handler, which can change things. In some cases the coil cannot be replaced independently - you may need to replace that whole air handler. If that's the case, $3800 wouldn't be terribly out of line, though it still is pretty high.

I haven't had time yet this morning to check on the warranty, but at first glance I would bet that unit had a 5 year warranty.

Havent been there in awhile. The casinos popping up all over in the NY/PA area have killed AC. I feel they are missing the boat on so much revenue.

They should legalize hookers there for the revenue boost

@ChiefD While we have you on the line...  What do you know about cleaning the indoor equipment of a split system?  We have 4 units and they are stupid filthy.  I'm having a hard time finding a company that does this work but I see you can by a bag and sprayer set up on amazon.

Will hang up and listen!

Thanks.

No idea on this coil itself, but I had to replace an AC unit outside and the difference in two companies quotes was gigantic. One was a company that I got referred to from a friend and the other was the company that is always on TV with ads. I’ll let you guess which one I used and which was was more. Hint they aren’t the same. For AC stuff, it’s good to get a couple quotes. It was well worth the sweating for the extra day or two.

I know it can be a pain in the you know what. If you are referring to the indoor coil you can spray a cleaning chemical on them and clean them off.  So the product you see on Amazon should work fine as long as you can easily access the coil.

I just looked at your ticket.

Is your house all electric?
i have gas for the stove and fireplace

just got done talking to the other guys.  he agrees that the coil needs to be replaced and can do it about a grand cheaper.  but he pretty much talked me into a new unit.  i can get 1200 cash back if i put in on a credit card and a new 10 year warranty.  if i just fix the coil, i will be looking at the same prob in a few years and a 10+ old system.  prob end up costing me like 6 grand but i will have a fresh system

he also didnt charge me for coming over

thanks for all your help btw
