Any insights from tonights games, part 2 (1 Viewer)

After the Rain

I was watching the start of the Texans/Bears game and really thought Benson looked pedestrian. In addition, there are a lot more powerful backs that I see. He will probably do alright because the Bears will be playing on some short fields against a relatively easy schedule, but he is also a potential bust candidate IMO.

It would be great to hear any insights you gained tonight!

Fatdale looks unimpressive . . . ditto for the Titans receivers . . .

Benson looked Pedestrian? I thought I saw the total opposite, running hard, bowling a LB over and catching the ball out of the backfield, he looked great to me. I know it's the texans, but pedestrian is the wrong adjective for Benson tonight.

From the Packers-Steelers game:

Favre and the first-team offense looked terrible. Jackson was poor and there was zero timing between Favre and the receivers. Favre failed to get a first down during his brief stint. Jackson continues to fail to stake a strong claim to the starting RB job with Morency out. Rodgers has looked OK - better than in previous years without question but nothing great. The lone bright spot offensively has been the rookie WR James Jones. The defense has been solid but as I said in the game thread I worry about them being worn down during the season if they're on the field too much. The Steelers' first-team offense didn't play much. Parker sat out and if you blinked you probably missed Roethlisberger, who fumbled after being sacked on his first series.

1. Benson also had 3 recs in limited action. That's a plus. 2. Brandon Jacobs looked slow to the hole. It's no secret, he quickness is far from quick, but he didn't look impressive tonight3. DeShaun Foster looked like Terrell Davis running behind a similar athletic and quick offensive line. If Carolina can manage a running game to go along with Steve Smith - look out. It's still pre-season though4. James Jones had good stats - didn't see the game.5. Michael Bennett raised a few eyebrows given his opportunity, if there is one.

Pretty convenient that their are report suggesting LJ is close to re-signing with KC........

chiefs/browns game:

1. Croyle did not look good to me at all. He looks like he will be abused come season.

2. Jerome Harrison looked quick, but made some mental mistakes. One was Frye threw to him in the flat and it was a lateral but not catchable, Harrison gave up on the play and the Chief defensive players took it to the house.

3. Travis Wilson, who I was high on, had issues catching with his hands. He dropped all of those balls while catching only body catches.

4. Anderson looked ok, so did Frye, but the poor wr play made it difficult to judge much.

5. Young WR, Hannon, could surprise for the Chiefs in a year after a year of developing

6. Kolby Smith looked slow and plodding.

hope this helps

C.Henry runs with alot of power and speed. Hits the hole and makes people miss.

Also, god forbid anyone other than VY has to play any this season at QB.

Wow, I take it you don't like Rodgers much. I thought he looked excellent scambling, buying time, hitting open receivers, and just staying poised. He had a great preseason game here.

1) Kevan Barlow will not make the Steelers roster this season. Gary Russell and Carey Davis have looked solid.

2) Steeler 1st team D looked sharp. First 5 Packer drives were 3 and out.

3) Dan Sepulveda punted 5 times averaging 49.8 yards with 3 inside the 20

4) Santonio Holmes will be the Steelers #1 receiver this year

5) Charlie Batch is a great guy to have on the bench

Jones looked great (except for his wearing 89 which kept making me think it was Ferguson). His very first catch was a short slant right into the teeth of the defense and he snagged it perfectly and took it to them. He looks like the real deal and the best 3rd wideout the Packers have had since .....

I happen to be high on Holmes as well, but I don't think he did much in this game, did he?

I'm not as down on Rodgers as a lot of Packer fans are. I think saying he looked excellent or played great would be a stretch. I thought he did OK and as I said he did look better than the previous two seasons. So he's clearly an improved QB; but what remains to be seen is if he has the stuff to eventually be a quality starter. I didn't see anything dynamic about him. Hopefully he shows more in the remaining pre-season games.

He has made long receptions down the field in both pre-season games so far. He has the ability to stretch the field and I think Ben is going to look deep to him quite a bit this year.

:excited: I guess we'll just have to disagree then. I don't know what more he could have done. Bubba, Ferguson, and Martin all made bad plays on what would have been two more first downs and a touchdown. He evaded the rush nicely, and he got his throws to the receivers.

I said in the game thread that I could see the Steelers sending Holmes deep 5-6 times a game this season just to take advantage of his speed and big-play potential. I love him this year. I don't think he'll surpass Ward but I do think he's going to be a very nice fantasy option. And if you're league rewards longer TDs he should be even better.

He could be very similar to Bernard Berrian from last season.

I don't know if some of you are watching the games or what but I find some analysis really far from the truth. Just look at the first post. I really thought benson looked good.

If you are in a dynasty with a deep roster... Gary Russell RB Pittsburgh should have already been added to your team.
Might be a little early for that. Seems like every year the Steelers have a rb that impresses in camp and preseason and then end up disappearing. Not saying I wasn't impressed with Russell.

Lenwhale, Fatdale whatever you enjoy to call him at this point looks unimpressive imo.

Chris Henry looked strong, fast and determined to get playing time this season.

If Young can't beat the Madden curse this year, the Titans may need to go sign another QB to finish the season.

Ditto on Benson's play tonight ... I was at the game and was impressed with Benson in particular. There were a couple runs where he bounced off defenders and kept forward progress. And as others have mentioned, he had quite a few targets by Grossman.

WAITAMINUTE -- Craig Davis ISN'T the second coming of Bettis? But he was so good!/sarcasm

I think you mean Carey Davis. Sarcasm is much more effective if you get the names right.

Didn't get to see any of the games tonight because of work, but in looking through the box scores on nfl.com looks like JLewis had a pretty decent game tonight. I don't see the normal game thread around for KC vs. Cleveland. Was wondering if anyone can shed a little light on how he actually did look.

Thanks for all the thoughts guys. It sounds like my thoughts on Benson aren't shared by others. That is one of the great things here, I get to consider the fact that my perspective may not be an accurate one. Keep 'em coming.

I didn't see the Steeler game so I can't say how good Russell looked...but he was a beast in college, then had academic issues...if he looks anything like he used to, he really could be a find. I heard he looked out of shape prI agree with the poster who advises grabbing him in deeper dynasty leagues.

WAS/TEN:

- Campbell erratic - some good throws though

- Chris Henry looked good

- Fatty White looked like himself ie blech

I guess nobody watched any of the other games....

Anyone see OAK/AZ or NYG/CAR? Based only on what I read (stats and/or commentary) OAK QB Walters looked pretty good, Culpepper looked OK if you discount he can't hold onto the ball and hey bout that RB Echemandu (mostly kidding). wtf w/Jacobs, Droughns and Plex (NYG) and Jordan (OAK) barely visible if that? A series and out?

It's on NFLN at 4PM today(94 in HD). He had a couple of good catches.

He will be better than that. He had more receiving yards than Berrian last year.

I was very impressed with Jacoby Jones in the Texans game yesterday. He seems to have a natural cutting ability to just set guys up and make them miss bad. Very good vision to see the moves early I think. I was saying to myself, how can this guy not start for them...he looks better than Walters and was explosive IMO. He was targeted at least 6 times (a couple in the EZ) when I watched and seems to have nice hands, is fast and had very good one step cut and go moves. He returned a nice punt where he juked an initial tackler for an exta 10-15 yards. Then did the same thing on a later catch. Looks like he plays tall and lean and just has that look of being a staple in a couple years. Also, Walters was wide open in the EZ on a deep throw but Schaub missed him long.

I saw just the first half of the NYG/CAR game. But here are a few of my observations:-- Foster looked GREAT. Don't know if it was him, the Giants being bad or what. He ran all over the Giants D. (By the way, DeAngelo DNP). Goines looked good also. I'm excited about the new zone blocking scheme.-- Eli struggled, but neither Plax or Toomer played. Lorenzen actually looked better FWIW.-- Carr was both hot and cold 6 of 8 for 88yds and a TD, but a few bad plays from holding the ball too long.-- Droughns looked OK, Jacobs not so much, really liked what Ward did however. That's what I saw.

I haven't seen the OAK/ARZ game yet, but I'm pretty sure that Jordan sat out w/ a sore back. He's been missing a lot of practices this year as well.

I am reserving my opinion about Foster until I see more games. He seems to always give you reason for hope in the preseason but something seems to click in the regular season. He did run straight at the holes instead of shuffling his feet so that seemed good. Again it was jsut one game so I will play the wait and see what happens. I still think D Williams will be the starter sooner rather than later.

Also did anyone else notice how upright Foster runs and how many solid hits the defense was getting on him?

Watched Cards - Raiders game, at least the first half of it. From a fantasy perspective, the biggest things to note were:

- Leinart looked pretty bad. Balls sailing on him. Didn't step up in the pocket. Had one last ditch shovel pass when he was about to get hit that was close to being a lateral (and fumble). Not too concerned. Hoping its just rust. Played three series I believe.

- Shipp looks really good. Really really good. I think he's going to get significant playing time and also be the goal line back. They also had him returning punts, but I don't expect that to list.

- Bryant Johnson is probably the best 3rd WR in the league. Took a slant 60 yards to the house. He probably can't get enough PT to be much of a fantasy force, but should be nice for owners if Fitz/Boldin get hurt.

Also of note

- Fitz and Boldin looked like their usual studly selves. Although Fitz did have one ugly drop that hit him right in the hands. He also made a circus grab near the sidelines. Boldin ran over a DB after making a catch. Funniest moment of the night: Late in the game a scrubby WR (LeRon McCoy? Can't remember....) dropped an easy ball that should have gone for a TD. Cut to Boldin who if you can read his lips says "You gonna get cut!". Funny.

- You have to give Edge a grade of "incomplete". He didn't look great, but only got a couple of carries. He started the game, and the OL wasn't playing great at first. They settled down a bit later. So he didn't do much, but had no room to run anyway. Did have a nice reception on a screen.

- Steve Breaston looked good on special teams. Something to keep an eye on. If he plays well and wins the job, could help the Cards D - Fantasy wise.

- From a defensive perspective, the D looked pretty good across the board. Dockett is going to be a beast. Berry looked quick. I was griping about Rolle in another post, but thought the corner play was pretty solid.

Nice analysis prior on the Cards/Raiders. Saw the same.

Leinart looked bad. 1st preseason game so no reason yet to call

Bryant Johnson looked real nice on the long TD catch. (it wasn't blown coverage like most preseason long TD catches) His value is limited right now to a Boldin/Fitz injury. 2008 FA

Marcell Shipp looked really really good. I hope and pray Whis uses him more this year because I don't want to have to deal with another full season of Edgerrin

Fitzgerald/Boldin -- Studs again. What's new?

--------------

Tennessee/Redskins

Chris Brown looked terrible. Still runs upright and slow to the hole. Lendale not any better. Ref missed an obvious 15-yard facemask on a Lendale run that probably would of went for a few yards. Henry looked nice. I want to see some vision from him & something vs a 1st string D before annointing him a HOF'er.

This game was near unwatchable. I don't even know why Brunell played to be honest. Looked terrible with the 2nd/3rd stringers. You realize how good VY was last year to lead this team on the late season run they had. Nothing noteworthy and it was on NFLN so I'm guessing a # of people saw this game.

Agree 100%. I think some people have simply decided that Benson will be whatever they think he is at this point. He could have had 8 straight 20-yard runs and he would have said the same thing. My observations: Caddy looked good in limited play, Benson looked good, TB offensive line looked better

Having watched Henry his entire collegiate career...that's the best he has ever looked. I thought I was watching another player.

I thought Henry looked more than "nice" and did show good vision. I also don't think Brown looked as slow as White (not that that's saying much).

? Probably because he's the backup QB?
