Anybody been to The Homestead in VA recently (1 Viewer)

Seeing some of the recent reviews, this place has poor food, is run down, and poor service.

Please talk me into or out of taking the family in June.

thanks

I'm guessing there's about a dozen places with that name.  Are you talking about the place in Hot Springs, VA?  If so, I haven't stayed there, but I've thought about it/looked into it and passed on it for other places in the area.

We're driving down to Asheville in August and I looked at The Homestead but it did seem like kind of a "past it's prime" location. I decided to go with Keswick Hall near Charlottesville. We're only staying 2 nights to check out the area before moving on but if it was the sole location, I might have given Homestead a longer look because of all the options of things to see and do there.

I haven't been personally, but a buddy went recently for a conference and he enjoyed it.

Jamny - let me know if you need recommendations for either Charlottesville (where I have friends and family and visit often), or Asheville (where I'll be going in 10 days!).

Seeing the VA confirmation, a place that I'd recommend in driving distance is Nemacolin in PA.  Good resort with lots of activities there and in the area (it is pretty close to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater).

Closer to The Homestead, I like the Inn at Willow Grove, but it's more of a romantic getaway than a place for families.  But you could make it a central point for seeing sites in the Charlottesville area.

I'm not even sure if we'll head into Charlottesville itself or spend our extra day just doing some scenic driving in the mountains. I am really looking to check out Asheville after hearing so many good things. We're staying at The Inn at Biltmore Estate while there. Have fun on your trip!

If you really want some good scenery, depending if it's out of your way - hit up the Skyline Drive, which then becomes the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The family and I recently took it from rt 211 down to interstate 64 a few months back and loved it.

We're very excited about Asheville.  We'll be visited the Biltmore, but not saying there.  We're staying in town very close to quite a few breweries that we'll be hitting up.

i havent but hey as long as we are dishing out advice has anyone been to the super 8 off of the bypass in kenosha thanks in advance brohans take that to the bank

Yeah, Skyline Drive and BRP is the reason we made a stop where we did. Didn't want to rush through it.

We debated staying in town but since we'll be there for like 4 days we wanted a place with a pool to relax by. The hotel has a shuttle into town or we'll cab it in to enjoy the breweries and bars.

I'll let you know the breweries to hit up.  On our list is New Belgium, Sierra Nevada, Wicked Weed, Funkatorium, and Green Man.

Nemacolin was great this past weekend.  Thanks

When I was getting my pilot's license, I used to fly from Winchester, VA (near the North end of Skyline Drive) to Ingalls Field Airport.  Amazing airport basically on top of a mountain ridge.  That airport serviced Hot Springs - A few folks I talked to who were regulars at Hot Springs (and flew in regularly) said the place was nice, but a little dated and in need of a refresh.  This was ~9 years ago...if they haven't updated since then, it's probably even worse.

How was Asheville?

Doing some research and it looks like Charlottesville is a must stop for a meal or two. Looks like a great walking area for restaurants. The plan is to hit Monticello in the morning, drive up most of Skyline and get back to Charlottesville for dinner. Any recs for dinner there?

I haven't been there, but I've heard people rave about the food/views/beer (I've had some of their beer - very good) here: Blue Mountain Brewery

You may be looking for something fancier, though.

We usually look for casual spots to eat like that but there doesn't seem to be a location for them in Charlottesville.
Oh, you wanted something within walking distance. Sorry about that. This place is only about a 10 minute drive, though

Yeah, I'm looking for something along that stretch in the city. I'm sure it won't be a problem though. Looks like tons of options.

Asheville was amazing.  Hit up 18 breweries I believe - and some nice family stuff with hiking and whatnot.

Charlottesville is very nice, have had a lot of family go to school there, and some family who still live there.  Any place you go there I think you'll enjoy.
