I see this same crap every year since the replay has been reinstated and I just do not get it. How many times (especially in prime time games) do you see a head coach miss throwing a flag on a critical play because he does not see the replay on the jumbo screen early? Obviously it happened tonight with Saban. He had so much time to throw the flag but I am guessing he did not see it earlier on the screen

So, why doesn't every team just hire a freaking coach that sits in a booth and only looks at the replays that NBC etc show. And the head coach throws a flag as soon as he sees something and communicates it to him.

I know some asst coaches do this I believe, but why not have a dedicated coach just for this, so that head coaches do not have to wait for the correct stadium replay especially on the road?

When every replay can be huge in a game where every game matters and in a game where millions of $$s are at stake, this is simply inexcusable.

Thoughts?

My thoughts exactly. I also think more things should be challenged (example: pass interference calls).

If I am not mistaken, Saban threw the challenge flag at least 10 seconds before the next snap. I saw a vivid replay of the flag sitting there on the ground right next to an official who refused to acknowledge its presence. I am not convinced it would have changed the outcome of the game, but that one play was a huge blow to Miami's energy..

So the catch is, do they have another flag to throw so the can review the challenge flag? Guess not..

10 seconds? Did you watch the game? They had a split screen showing the flag and showing the extra point. About 2 seconds, max, elapsed between the flag being thrown and ball being hiked. Plus, the coach threw it behind the ref. The ref wasn't refusing to acknowledge it, he was watching the play.H0mer.

I agree with the poster above, you didn't watch the game.He hesitated about 40 times, then threw it 2-3 seconds before the snap. 40 feet BEHIND the ref. When most coaches throw the flag, they're either talking to an official, or they are franticly running down he sidelines trying to get someones attention. Saban clearly blew it.

I'm pretty sure most teams do have someone in the booth that advises on challenges. I've heard reference made towards them more than once.

No, you can't review when the flag was thrown, either. And yes, it was only 2 seconds, max, between when he threw the flag and the snap.

But I am surprised they don't have someone watching the TV broadcast. So much stuff the announcers give away strategy wise or point out that if the other team knew about, it could give a slight edge. Like "I spoke to the head coach last night and he wants to limit the QBs time in the pocket" could tell the other team to protect the short routes more. Or "Player so-and-so isn't coming back this half" or, like above, those replays.

Although Madded screws up the rules so many times, he's probably useless on challenges. He repeats "The ground can't cause the fumble" so many times in the wrong context--when it can cause a fumble--that any coach listening to him would be wise to turn down the sound and read the rulebook instead.
