Anyone ever bought or owned a Venus Flytrap? (1 Viewer)

My son was learning about these at school and became pretty interested in it. I saw they actually sell these at Amazon and you can find them locally and at a pretty reasonable price (~$10-15).

I think it would be kinda cool to get one and let him take care of it and feed it, etc., but I'm wondering if it's something that will actually last or is worth it. So, any of you ever had one or brought one and can share your experience?

Venus Fly Trap

Same with lower reviews

Had one in grade school. Neat. It's not a SNAP shut but a pretty smooth closing. You can't just open and close them all willy nilly though as they open slowly over the course of day(s). Mine lasted for a while I guess.

Had a few of them as a kid. They don't last very long, maybe a month or two, but it is fun to feed them dead bugs. The trap that eats the bug eventually turns brown and dies, but then lots of little new ones grow. Wholesome fun for a kid.

So the whole plant only lasts a month or two? Or just the ones that eat the bugs?

Had one as a kid. Didn't last long. Make sure your son doesn't teach it tricks (beg, roll over). I find that children become too attached to a pet once they begin teaching them tricks.

The actual traps/leaves turn brown and die within a week of eating a bug, but the plant itself survives and keeps producing new leaves. In my experience the whole plant died within a couple of months. But I was a kid and probably neglected it after the novelty wore off.

Try to buy a good specimen locally if you can. Home Depots and garden centers carry them sometimes.

I think I had a couple and they didn't last long at all. I grew up in New England, so it wasn't an ideal location for them. I didn't have them outside, but they had to be near the windows for light (IIRC) and with the cold snaps, I think it could still get a little too cold for them near the window. That or I did a bad job taking care of them.

I got some for my kids and we had this same experience. They loved them.

The theater we did little shop in last fall got a bunch to decorate tables with. We brought some home. They were cool.

So did you ever get one? I saw them at Home Depot the other day and thought of this thread. Almost bought one myself.

I did. Ordered it from Amazon and it's been pretty neat. Still alive, the seller was excellent with very detailed instructions, and we've even done a few feedings that have been fun with my son.
