Anyone have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3? (1 Viewer)

I guess the one problem will be all my pictures in iPhoto -- I'll have to make sure I sync my iPhone before I return it to Verizon, and then figure out how to get all those photos from iPhoto to some safe place.
I just started using Google for all of this. I am not quite sure where they are all going, but I know they are associated with my google account somewhere. Before it was Picassa, then when Google+ came Google Photos, and I think it may be backed up in Docs? It's kind of confusing... I still backup on an external, and just use the Google Photos to automatically upload when on wifi. I wouldn't want to risk losing some priceless pics if something happens to my phone.
Google Plus does the autobackup (uses the same iGuts as PicasaWeb). I LOVE the autobackup. For a one time dump off, you can dump the photos into Google Drive (formerly called Google Docs) and have access to them via the Google Plus "Photos" app (if you chose to enable that option).

Ok, so they are all ultimately going to to Drive? That's what I thought, but wasn't 100% sure.

Kind of,,.

They go to Google Plus, which is Picasaweb (but they do count against Drive storage). Drive has separate photo/video storage capabilities and does not get any of the neat Auto-Awesome treatments.

For iPhone we were paying however much for the iCloud service which just automatically sends all my photos from my phone to the cloud somewhere. Is there a similar feature available on Droid? I don't care what it costs, I'd just like a reliable way to store and host pictures that doesn't require a lot of work from me (e.g., I don't want to have to plug into a computer and sync photos onto that computer or some other such nonsense).

The Google+ app has an Auto Backup option that I have, apparently, failed at describing in my last two posts in this thread :bag:

: lmao:

I kind of hate the social network aspect of Google Plus, but if it will archive my photos in a safe place, that's good for me. Thx.

I'm intrigued. May need to check it out. I do everything on google (mail, calendar, Picassa) but I have an iPhone since iPhone 1. I don't need to change but am intrigued after reading this thread. I am eligible for an upgrade. Was going to wait to see what iPhone 6 looked like.

In terms of the size, why not just get a case for your belt. At this point, I don't care how it looks, I just want to protect my phone and be able to get it easily. But I know most think it adds to the tool factor.

Note 3 and the OS are heaven. I had an iPhone up to the 4 and made the switch 2 years ago. I'd never go back.

I love the extreme customization. You'll be amazed the first time you get your phone about some of the things you can do, that you never could do on the iPhone.

Enjoy it.

You should look in to IFTTT. I think it works on Android. They have one recipe that will take all your photos and upload to Dropbox automatically I think. It's pretty handy.

I just went to best buy to look at the phone. I don't know, didnt blow me away. Maybe I'm just past the new tech stuff in my life. My iPhone 4 with ios6 still works for me.

Do not upgrade to iOS 7 on the 4. Slow and terrible.

This phone has my curiosity peaked though.
I'll be very interested to see what the battery life is in real life tests. You can't beat Nokia cameras as far as phone cameras go.

I had been waiting for a price break on a LG G2 but the Lumia 1520 is certainly in the running.

Google almost forces you into it. But you can set it up to be pretty private and only share photos you want to on the social network part of it.Google+ also has a cool location feature. It was previously called latitude but now they incorporated it into plus, though I think you can only see location sharing on an android device, and not a desktop browser open to Google +. This comes in handy if you go on vacation with groups of people. Just turn on location sharing and people can see where you are. Worked great when I went skiing. Location history is also pretty cool to see where you go. We all know the NSA is collecting data on us all the time, so might as well take advantage of it. You can select specific people from your circles to see your location. So I always share mine with my wife, and if I want other people to see where I an I will temporarily share, like when I was in Vail last year with other FAM members.

Also forgot to mention I switched over to Chrome finally for all my devices. Fantastic browser, fast, and I love that no matter which of my work computer, two home computers, or phones I use, it's all synced and all my bookmarks are ready to rock. Just another reason that I can transition into a new device with ease.

I should have expedited the shipping. I'm nerding out about this and don't want to have to wait another day.....

Interesting that you just found that in Chrome as I am having the same experience with Safari. I have used Chrome for a very long time, but I have never taken the time to learn how to put the bookmarks bar on the left side of the pane as in old school Netscape or IE. When Mavericks came out I started using Safari because it is supposed to help with the battery life (doesn't auto-load Flash) and the bookmarks are just like I remember and like them. And when i have Safari open on my iPhone it shows all the tabs open on my Air as well. Pretty cool.

The only difference being that Chrome is device agnostic. I assume you couldn't switch to an android device and download Safari.

Fair point.

I have iPhone4 which doesn't have Siri. Anyway, chrome browser does a bang up job with voice recognition on the iPhone 4 and makes it easier to search for Chubby Latina Mature videos than typing that in.

the google settings app is where you can set up photo backup & location settings. Like backing up photos over wifi only, and determining who can see your location, and to use location for Google Now.

I also recommend searching "google" in the play store and downloading a bunch of the google apps. Here are some good ones,

google+

chrome

google search (gives you google now)

calendar

earth

drive

play music

keep

streetview

google keyboard

text to speech

goggles

currents

voice

chrome to phone

gesture search

hangouts

I use the amazon cloud with my S3, and previously with my HTC for music, photos, etc. I have no problems with it, and it'll import from iTunes. I'm not interested in the google+ stuff either.

Doesn't teh Google search app give you goggles and some others?

I have an iPhone now, but am considering switching next time.

Here's a question, if I have a book on the kindle app on my ipad, will I be able to pickup and read it on an android phone via its Kindle app as well?

I'm pretty sure the kindle app will allow you to do this, but if it's native format is in itunes it could be a problem. I am sure there is an easy conversion, but apple doesn't usually play nice.

And I'm not 100% sure about the google search / goggles question. I just downloaded them individually.

Does the amazon cloud have an autobackup? I think this would be more comparable to a dropbox.

Google+ is inevitable. If you are on an android they almost force you into it now. Sure you can avoid it, but might as well just set it up, make everything private, and don't put anyone in your circles. That's probably the best way to "avoid" it if you are against it in my opinion.

I am curious about how people print photos. I have a CVS & Walgreens app, and I see you can select photos from your phone through these apps. I would like to have an option that I could sync with google photos, since they make the "auto fix" the pictures so easy. I think you may be able to do this with Picassa desktop, but I ideally would like something to do all on my Note.

Huge fan of Amazon, so if they have an option that works, I'd be all over this. Is it all automated, or do I regularly have to do syncing and crap like that?

A guy I was working with was just showing me some things on his. Love that you can watch a movie and surf the internet at the same time.

I bought he Note 3 about a month ago. I love it. The android learning curve takes a while if you've been an Apple guy forever (like me). The size is absolutely no issue to me In fact, it was one of the main factors in me choosing this phone. The screen is brilliant. When I see my daughter's iPhine now, it's hard to believe I ever used something so small.

I used this feature on an airplane once, but other than that don't really have much of a use for it. The OP said he rides a train to work, so I could see it being a very handy feature for people who ride trains / airplanes often.

The new one you can actually draw a window with the Spen, and the new window will pop up.

Auto backup works fine. Soon as I'm on wi fi photos upload. Also, all of the cd's I bought since like 1992 or something were auto ripped to my account. Stuff I didn't even remember having. I had no problem retrieving songs from iTunes or windows media player. I put the amazon app on my wife's iphone, and she can download all of my songs to her phone for free, or stream them. I think I pay $20-30 a year for photos, songs, videos, even documents if I wanted. All runs through my amazon account.

Totally doing this.

For what it is worth, Google Music has a cloud service too, there is a way to sync it with iTunes.

Spotify FTW
I must of been living under a rock, but can you briefly explain this to me? I have used Pandora, but never quite experimented with the other music services.
It's the best thing I ever found in terms of music. I pay 10 bucks a month and get unlimited streaming of basically any album I want any time on any of my devices. I never have to rip or download another song, never need to store and transfer music collections from hard drives. I just have it all. You can even download music onto a mobile device, as much as you want, for use as long as you use the service. (So, e.g., when I'm on a subway, or somewhere else without access, I have everything I want). It also has Pandora-like music finder services etc. that have turned me onto some cool stuff.

Makes life so easy. Great service. So when I get home and get my Galaxy, I don't need to do anything. All my music will be right there.

Holy crap. It's gonna take some time to get used to this. It's big, the screen is stunning, the customization goes on for days, and it's gonna take this Apple guy a while to figure out Android. I will say that I picked up my iPhone after using this for a few hours and it's hard to imagine using something so tiny.

I'm actually pretty well setup with the basics right now but there's plenty more to explore. Full review after some more time with it.

Gripes as I figure this out:

-how do I get to the top of a page in Chrome? I think in the iPhone version I could just tap the top of the screen and it would auto scroll all the way to the top. No way I enable that here?

-messaging is screwy. I'm not getting a bunch of texts from my wife. I get them on my work iPhone still because apparently they are imessage and I had my two iPhone linked together (I would get the same messages on both iPhone previously). So my wife can't text me. This is where the apple brand shows its strengths - - everything usually just works. I'm sure we'll figure it out, strange thing is she gets my texts, I just don't get hers.

- as with any new device the typing will take getting used to. I got the highest rated keyboard app which supposedly is best and it's at least an improvement on the stock one. This will just take some time.

- it Is big. And you feel the difference in your hand when manipulating things especially holding it one handed. My hand muscles were plain tired by bedtime. Again I think that will just take time. I don't mind the size in terms of carrying it, and the screen is oh so worth it.

More to come.

Last preliminary gripe: the battery is going fast. At 84% at the end of my commute. I been using it a lot today, but I think I may have the screen brightness jacked up too high.

If you hold down the home screen button, then press "task manager" you can kill of apps that stay running,or just press "RAM" and "clear memory".

If you have been going in and out of a lot of things they will stay running.
