Very Cool. For someone that may be interested in going once or twice a year, would you recommend putting on my big boy pants and going solo? Or is tandem "just as fun" for the 1-2 times a year I would go?

I've only gone twice (tandem) but, as I understand it, in order to go solo you've got spend a couple thousand in order to get the many hours of training so that a certified company will actually let you go solo.

Yes, Accelerated freefall or AFF is the quickest route of training. IIRC, there are eight levels of AFF, and if you pass all eight levels, you can go solo. It is also the most expensive.
