The Missoula Urban Transportation District on Tuesday unveiled plans to operate the Mountain Line bus system “zero fare” starting Jan. 5.

Missoula becomes one of only about 40 cities and metropolitan areas to offer free public transportation, a fact not lost on Mayor John Engen.

socialism at it's finest.

The mountain is high, the valley is low
And you're confused 'bout which way to go
So I flew here to give you a hand
And lead you into the promised land

Socialism? It doesnt appear that it is being funded by the tax payers. Nothing to see here IMO.
You missed this part...

The announcement, which has been in the works for months, came at a crowded noon news conference at the downtown bus transfer station. Thirteen public and private partners led by the University of Montana and the city of Missoula have signed on to fund a three-year demonstration project to see if it’ll fly.

The goal is to increase ridership by 45 percent – 400,000 annual riderships, said Eric Hines, who chairs the MUTD board. That works out to nearly 1,100 more rides a day, all of them free.

It’s free only to passengers, of course. Hines said the partners will pony up $460,000 a year in order to eliminate the fares. UM and the city have the lion’s share of the financial commitments – roughly $205,000 and $100,000, respectively.

What does this accomplish? Serious question.
free transportation.
I realize that. But doesn't that mean less money would come in? What's the upside for them to offer free transportation?
ok, serious answer.

knowing that you have a ride to wherever you need to got takes a lot of pressure off of a lot of people.

1. you dont have to pay for gas.

2. kids can get to school if they miss the school bus.

3. you dont have to have a drivers license, pay insurance, register your car, fix mechanical problems.

4. bikers have an 'out' in the winter.

5. homeless dummies can still feel like they are supported and part of the community.

6. less traffiic.

7. less dependence on big oil.

8. freedom.

9. less pollution.

10. there may be more ...

I'm not crazy about the public transportation clientele...They come to our office building strictly to use our public bathroom and funk it up something horrible......They seem to have very bad diets.

As conservative as I am, and man....I'm conservative - I do like this idea on the surface. It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years. If the buses start getting overrun with the homeless just looking for something to do or a place to be, and other simply loiter - could people that use public transportation today stop using it thus elimination most of the things on this list?

Vienna has free transportation and it's basically the cleanest greatest city around. It's technically not free, it's an honor system, but it can be free if you choose it to be. I doubt there is a cleaner city that is anywhere near it's size or charm.
