I've owned my own graphic design agency for a few years and while things are good, its been beating me up a bit lately with late hours and struggling to find new business. Plus I'm in competition with every 3rd world country on fivvr and 16 year old kids with a copy of photoshop. Now mix in AI.
I have a colleague who owns a Signarama franchise....they are a national sign and banner printing company. He loves it and is always busy. One is for sale in my general area and I've started talking to the company about possibly purchasing it and pivoting my career. I'm hitting 50 this year and graphic design is not always an old man's game.
This seems like a good opportunity for me b/c it is still in the visual field but with a more tangible/hard goods product that AI or someone offshore who can live on $10 logo designs can compete with. Plus I hear they have great corp support and do a ton of media advertising for us. For them, signs are everything from large outdoor illuminated ones, to office building door numbers, car/truck wraps, and everything in between. I don't have installation exp but many shops hire that out for most projects.
Has anyone gone through the franchise business model (any industry)? Any wisdom to impart?
