Anyone up for a Songs about Food Draft? (1 Viewer)

Round 15: Wild card #3

This was truly a tough call.  With so many choices still available, I could have gone with one that hearkens back to my college days, or another nod to my beloved Smithereens; instead I go with one that reminds me of what I'm most proud of in my life--my family.  From among yet another bevy of choices, I picked The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - Veggie Tales.

Round 15 - Wild Card - Lunch With Gina, Steely Dan

For what it's worth, there was a period of my life when i spent a lot of time with young ladies who liked me more for my stash than my status, stacks, stability or statuesque figure. Getting them out in the midday sun of Reno's high-desert clime for a filling repast in order to let them profess their legitimate personal reasons for reaching out to me was always special fun. A guarantor of further trouble, sure, but most of life's simple pleasures come at a cost. C'est la vie....

This was more fun than i thought it would be. Thx to @cosjobs and all the participants

I was planning on taking another song (by someone else), but this one keeps coming back into my head. It was on the '76 album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. This song is the only cover on it. It was written by Steve Goodman, and I have always loved this rendition.

Round 15

Wildcard

Banana Republics - Jimmy Buffett  🍌

Yup. That'll do it. Nice drafting with everyone. Thanks for commishing, cos. Thanks for spreadsheet work by Binky and Mr. Ected and others. Just thanks in general. Interesting to see all your picks. A multi-layered cake of a draft. Peace.

Appetizer (Anin't Nobody Here but us Chicken) Schwarma - Louis Jordan & his Tympany Five

Soup - Minestrone /10ccs

Salad - (Burning Down the) House Salad / Talking Heads

Entree - Fish Tacos / Fishing With You / Carsi Blanton

Side Dish - Jambalya / K-Paz De La Sierra

Dessert - Cake (walk) / Taj Majal

Beverage - Beer (run) Todd Snider

Fruit - (Banana Milk)shake - Soul Shake / Delaney & Bonnie & Friends

Breakfast - Chicken Fried Steak, eggs over easy, gravy on the side - Texas Cookin' /George Strait

Plus three wild cards.  Hominy Grits - The Band

Talking Heads/ More Songs About Buildings and Food / For Artists Only

My only complaint on this draft is that I didn't get a single like on  Fishing With You / Carsi Blanton. It brought me close to tears when I first heard it. And every time since.

Alright, I’ve put entirely too much thought into this whole thing (thanks, covid!) but I think I’ve put together a days worth of meals that make some sense to eat together and at the same time have a playlist that spans a few different genres and eras and also comes together.

So, we start the day with

  • Breakfast – She Don’t Use Jelly - The Flaming LipsShe'll make ya breakfast / She'll make ya toast / But she don't use butter / And she don't use cheese / She don't use jelly / Or any of these / She uses Vaseline
Alongside our toast, we’ll have a nice orange

  • Fruit – O Valencia! – The Decemberists
That’s a pretty solid start to the day, easily enough to get us through until lunch time, where we’re going to have

  • Soup – Canned Tomatoes – Courtney Barnett
And a

  • Sandwich – Breadwinner – Everything Everything
So far so good but that’s not a huge lunch, so part way through the afternoon it’s time for a

  • Snack – Chocolate – The 1975
Note that this also works if you want to use what that song is truly about (weed) – more on that later.

We’ve made it through the day nicely and we’ve been pretty responsible so far – light breakfast and lunch with just a little chocolate snack in the mid-day. Now it’s dinner and it’s time to indulge.

We’re going to start with some light decadence in the form of

  • Amuse Bouche – Fior di Latte – Phoenix
But that on it’s own is a bit plain, isn’t it? Let’s dress up that amuse with some

  • Wildcard #1 - Green Onions – Booker T & the M.G.’s
Now that we’ve got our pallet ready, time to bring on some more meaty appetizers.

  • Appetizer – Little Bones – The Tragically Hip - baby, eat this chicken slow, It's full of all them little bones
We’re going to get to dinner here soon, we’re seated now and we’ll start things off with a

  • Salad – Start Choppin’ – Dinosaur Jr.
By now we’re getting there but don’t forget that “chocolate” snack, we’ve got quite an appetite worked up here and no regular meal can do it justice – no we need a

  • Main Course – Banquet – Bloc Party
This is a fancy, very high end banquet hall so we’ve brought in only the best accompaniments to this banquet

  • Side Dish – Down at McDonaldzz – Electric Six - Now everybody down at McDonnellzzz / They down with Ronnell McDonnell / And now they hitting the bottle / And everybody cool!
Everybody cool indeed so let’s grab some dessert, after the banquet and fries, it’s time to go from salty to sweet

  • Dessert – Salted Caramel Ice Cream – Metronony
And hey, as long as we’re going this far, we might as go all the way and chase it with

  • Beverage – Milkshake – Kelis
Honestly at this point, we’re pretty full, so come later in the evening, we’re probably want to feel a bit better about ourselves and go with something just light and healthy, a simple

  • Wildcard #2 - Passionfruit – Drake
But of course this is an NV party and the 1975 brough the weed and Electric Six had us hitting the bottle, Phoenix had us getting it on all afternoon, you know we’re making a late night run somewhere for food but what do we want? It’s munchies time so, Pizza? Nachos? Tacos? French Fries? If only some place had all those options to choose from

  • Wildcard #3 - Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell – Das Racist
And finally, I'm full (and finished)

I really wanted to do Duck a' LaGrange / ZZ Top, but seemed too much of a reach, even for me.

Nice!

Love this album and preceding EP.
Wow. I got on DM's radar! Next is an obscure seventies pick for wik and a aughts one for Tasker. Love drafting with you all. Can't say it enough. :hifive:

I was trying to get the last song from the preceding EP you mention about his baby daughter but can't remember the name of the song for the life of me...I searched a bunch, too. Lookout! had some great artists; formative ones.

Had to do a novelty song for my last pick, one from my favorite cheesy movies.

Round 15 (wildcard): “Theme from Meatballs” - Rick Dees
I can’t decide whether to do novelty or regular song.
My last selection has to honor my adopted hometown of Chicago.

I don't think I'm spotlighting at this point to say that I considered taking a novelty song from Chicago band The Hamburglars, they of such songs as "Robble Attack!", "Robble - A - Go - Go," "The Shamrock Shake," "Damnburglar," and this one:  Burgesa con Queso.

But instead I'm going with a Chicago legend.  If you were to head to Fitzgerald's or The Hideout on any given day, you'd probably find him there, performing on his own or with...anyone in Chicago.  He's worked with every person I know and all the ones I don't, including every Chicago musician that you can think of.  Yet somehow, despite all of that and a couple of Grammy nominations, he mostly remains a Chicago-only treasure.

I guess this qualifies as a novelty song, too.  I'm linking a live version because seeing him live is the best way to enjoy him.

Round 15 - wildcard - Robbie Fulks - Scrapple

How about a member of The Mod Squad?
Peggy Lipton is my best pal in D.C.'s aunt, which I found out years later when I jokingly said that with his newfound TV news celeb (he was a news reporter of business things) he should date Rashida Jones. His earnest response: "She's a second cousin." RIP Peggy, apparently quite the thing in young men's minds at the time. If her family is any indication, she was also likely brilliant like them.
