Apocalypto (1 Viewer)

Our hero Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), whose main job in the movie is to gaze at everything in disbelief, saves his wife and son by placing them at the bottom of a well, where they are subsequently trapped...

...Unfortunately, it has begun to rain -- about 12 inches per minute, apparently -- because the well begins to fill up. And although our heroine could merely float up to the top (like Russell Crowe trapped in the swimming pool in the recent A Good Year), she instead chooses to start drowning.
:lmao:

Went to the mat with wifey today. We both thought it was great. Riveting with plenty of action. We also agreed that while it is graphic it was not a gore fest by any stretch. I'm sure the new Rocky movie will be bloodier.

I now know where the phrase, "heads are gonna roll" came from.

Just saw this movie tonight with a couple of friends, we all agreed that it kick some serious ###. I'd definitely recommend it..

gf changed her mind to 'Deja Vu' when she realized Denzel Washington was in it.

not half bad. not a great movie but interesting and action-packed.

Deja Vu or Apocalypto?

I liked it all except the 'ocean' scene towards the end.

It just felt like that part was out of place.

Just got back from watching it...best move of the year IMHO.

Original story.
Gave me visuals I haven't seen before.
Captivating.
No Slow parts.Gibson may be a racist, but he's one heck of a director.

My top three this year are as follows:

1) Apocalypto

2) Prestige

3) Departed

A lot of people have complained about the violence, but I believe Gibson wanted to emphasize the brutatlity and unsophistication of the culture so that in the end when the Europeans are coming on the boat with the Christian cross brandished, the scene would be viewed as a symbol that a new era of civility was about to begin.

Of course I think that's a crock of ####, historically speaking...just saying that was probably the method to Gibson's madness.

Had it not been for Gibson's anti-semetic remarks this would be nominated for best picture. Wouldn't be surprised if it still got love from the Hollywood Foreign Press.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IN MY OPINION....I felt the Europeans had more to deal with the little girls prophecy. The little sick girl was saying that their civilization would end with the coming of the black jaguar. Or something along those lines she claimed. I believe Jaguar Paw was that black jaguar the girl was talking about. By them chasing and attempting to kill Jaguar Paw the chain of actions were put into place for the collapse of their civilization. The Europeans sailing in was the final nail in the coffin for the Mayan civilization. With the Europeans over some 90% of the Mayans would die from disease...But yeah I really really liked the movie a lot. But I did feel it was kinda out of place when you saw them sailing in...

Excellent point, but I was addressing Gibson's use of violence/gore.I agree that the European scene was basically the last of a significant chain of events. The more I think about this movie, the more I really like it.Looking forward to getting the DVD and hearing Gibson's audio commentary.Gibson is the most underrated talent in Hollywood.

Is anyone else surprised that Mel's name is tagged onto the Title in the promos? With all of the backlash after his anti-Semetic rant, I'd think his PR people would tell him to back his name off of the whole thing....or maybe they are trying to cash in on it with other anti-semetics?
Not really. Only the extreme left-wingers are  about him. I'm going to watch the movie tomorrow, if for no other reason, to piss off Democrats.

I loved the movie and I'm an agnostic Democrat. :shrug:I think directors like Gibson are vital to provide the Christian perspective in today's Hollywood that is predominantly ran by non-christians.

You watching a movie is going to piss off Democrats? I'm not sure what's worse - you being so motivated to be politically divisive that you go out of your way to do something for not other purpose than to serve that desire or your delusion that somehow you seeing this movie would matter to a Democrat.

Well now that the cat is out of the bag about the Crusaders.....

The movie was highly entertaining and the 2.5 hours flew by.

I am not saying that the Crusader scene was unbelievable, but it was the only part of the movie that I felt was missing 'something'. I think it could have been done differently. It just seemed to be a discontinuity in the movie. I am not sure if it was the adaptation or the directing, but that was really the only part of the movie that rubbed me wrong.

Definitely worth the price of admission.

I can add a third choice. Going to see a film that Gibson has publically claimed is meant to be an allegory of the "failed Iraq War" in order to piss off Democrats.

Crusaders? I think you must mean Conquistadors.

You might want to read that a little more slowly. He wasn't supporting your case.

Very entertaining. I'd give it a B+. Could have been an A- with a few changes.

spoilers***********************

The wife having the baby in the well was just plain silly. It wasn't necessary. Her having labor pains would have been enough to build the tension even more. She was pregnant and had to hold her other child that is the reason she couldn't just float. The reviewer who brought that up above is a tool.

The way they dealt with the main antagonist was pretty weak. It wasn't enough of a showdown type moment. It was over too quick and not satisfying enough. The showdown is a bit cliche but let's be honest this was just an action movie. A great one at that.

Was the beach scene part of the girl's prophecy? I hope it was. Then it would make sense why he ran off to the beach leaving his family behind. If not I'm confused.

Gibson showing the Conquistadors as being a new era of civility? I don't think that was his intention. The main character did not trust them and he took his family and fled.

It was a gory movie but what is wrong with that? Sure the U.S. may be hypocritical with it's rating system when it comes to nudity but what does that have to do with whether gore is low-brow? I like nudity and gore as well when properly depicted.

This film delivered.

I just got back from watching this movie and I thought it was great. Certainly some things could have been done a little differently, but overall the story was great. Say what you will about Gibson's actions over the summer, he's becoming one of my favorite filmakers. Very creative and intense throughout. I'd recommend this movie as well.

:banned:And out loud.

if it actually gives some insight into mayan culture then i'm willing to see it. if it's just a glorified snuff film then i'm not.
Saw this with a group of friends and one of them majored in Anthropology (yeah i know...). Anyhow i got an earful of what was NOT deemed accurate.1. The Mayans depicted in the movie looked more Mexican when they should have had more Asian features (save for a couple of the actors).2. They wore alot more clothes due to mosquitos.3. Something about the buildings/temples and being built too close together. So, uhm... yeah, whatever... just an FYI. Also if anyone was curious, the slaves who were covered in white were making plaster that they then superheat to make brick/stone. And like everyone else has posted, the ending was kinda off. Said anthropologist let out a huge, "LAME!", after that scene.

SPOILERS......I actually liked the movie so much I saw it again with another group of friends, I made sure to pay close detail to the little girls prophecy. Basically everything she says ends up happening. She predicted the eclipse and said that the time was near where a warrior would arise from the mud and who could run with the jaguar (the mud part refers to Jaguar Paw walking in the mud pit towards the end of the chase and then realizing he was no longer afraid). She also goes on to say that by following and chasing this man the mayans would put in place the steps for their civilization's collapse. (this of course leads to the mayans encountering the europeans and their deadly diseases)So yeah, the first time I saw the movie I thought the Europeans at the end just didn't feel right. But I now think it was pretty cool having them in there and fitting it with the girl's prophecy...

Tell me you're kidding. This movie was most definitely a gorefest.

Just got back from watching it...best move of the year IMHO.

Original story.
Really? I thought the story was pretty trite. Peaceful village/town/tribe gets attacked by ruthless gang/posse/tribe and one peaceful villager decides to fight back. I thought the plot was exceedingly formulaic, though in an interesting and fresh setting. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy that formula, so I enjoyed the movie, but I wouldn't call the story original. In fact, once they got back in the woods, the plot felt like a rehash of Surviving the Game starring Ice T.
Gave me visuals I haven't seen before.
Agreed. Though I thought the gore/torture/mutilation was a tad excessive.
Captivating.
Definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat.
No Slow parts.
Agree again. Though I would have appreciated just a bit of character exploration or historical perspective that didn't invlove running, chasing or torture every once in a while during the last two hours of the film.

I'm not kidding. Gorefest? Hardly. Some blood? You betcha.

i saw it and thought it was awesome for what its worth. An extremely entertaining movie that was different than the cookie cutter crap hollywood keeps churning out time and time again

Saw it today. A little bit of a let down relative to the reviews here. Good action, you never do rest for a moment, but that is about it. B

Late to the party, but finally saw it tonight. Absolutely awesome movie. I kept wanting to hit rewind, to review bits of the prophecy - but the movie theater frowns upon rewinding films mid-showing.

this movie wasn't very good. can't believe some of the glowing reviews in here.
What didn't you like about it? I thought it was great.
it was alright. just wasn't anything great. not even close to being the best movie of the year (The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine are way better).
Yeah both those movies are very good, but this movie is very different and it's not very fair to compare them to it. But yeah if you think those movies are better I can't fault that view. I just enjoyed the edge of your seat type of suspense that i got from this movie.

I agree. I didn't particularly care for Little Miss Sunshine - but I know a lot of people that loved it.Apocalypto was by no means "the best movie I have ever seen"; but it was well worth the price of admission and I found many parts of it riveting. Been awhile since I have been in a movie theater actually physically reacting to an action sequence (trying to dodge spears, etc.). I am looking forward to when it comes out on DVD so I can further analyze it to see exactly what Gibson is trying to say.
