Appalachian Trail 2021 (1 Viewer)

Yep - the idea of a through hike sounds great but I’m not sure after doing segments that I’ll ever do it.  I’d never do it solo and finding the time plus someone who is willing and able to do it with you is a challenge.  Plus not killing them.
My son and myself just finished our 4th section together.  He just graduated college and is starting work next week for the gov't doing something he can't tell me about and they haven't even told him the exact work location yet.  Anyway it's been amazing to see how things have changed over the last five years.  First trip we were about the same pace but when we hit camp I was doing most everything.  This year he's waiting for me at the top of every climb, he handled all the water chores, and sets up the tent on his own faster than I could.  Pretty humbling going from being the guy who is teaching your son skills to being the boat anchor.  The good news is that his new work vicinity will put him close to some new sections of the AT to do together.

Wouldn't surprise me that with a lot of us being (have been) ff junkies, that the planning and logistics of tackling the entire trail would be more fun than the hiking part.

That’s awesome that you’ve gotten to do that with your son.  Hoping to one day with mine but they aren’t super adventurous.

And it’s very weird you put that above - I almost posted something identical to that in my post because I feel the same way.  I’ve spent more time planning, reading maps, reading others stories, buying gear, reading about gear, watching videos about gear, reading the AT guide, etc. than I have spent time out hiking it.

isn't hiking it in our head good enough?

A thru hike isn’t in the cards, but I’d be interested in doing a section or two.

NOBO or SOBO?
I would vote NOBO:

- Negative is it be more crowded but that’s not a huge deal, IMO

- SOBO is harder for inexperienced hikers
- just a guess but think we have a lot more FBGs in the southern states - more participation

- likelihood of folks having to quit - may never get to NC, TN, GA where segment guys could meet up

pretty much unrelated, but i had a chance to test out both my new sleeping pad and groundquilt this weekend, and would easily recommend the Uberlite and Burrow for anyone looking to upgrade. (Unless you are in a hurry, then you may want to avoid Hammock Gear)

So, looks like I will be getting back out to do a segment before the end of the year.  40 miles across 4 days - starting in North Georgia not far from the line and in to North Carolina.  Can't wait!
