My son and myself just finished our 4th section together. He just graduated college and is starting work next week for the gov't doing something he can't tell me about and they haven't even told him the exact work location yet. Anyway it's been amazing to see how things have changed over the last five years. First trip we were about the same pace but when we hit camp I was doing most everything. This year he's waiting for me at the top of every climb, he handled all the water chores, and sets up the tent on his own faster than I could. Pretty humbling going from being the guy who is teaching your son skills to being the boat anchor. The good news is that his new work vicinity will put him close to some new sections of the AT to do together.Yep - the idea of a through hike sounds great but I’m not sure after doing segments that I’ll ever do it. I’d never do it solo and finding the time plus someone who is willing and able to do it with you is a challenge. Plus not killing them.
Wouldn't surprise me that with a lot of us being (have been) ff junkies, that the planning and logistics of tackling the entire trail would be more fun than the hiking part.
