Apple TV (1 Viewer)

Looking to cut out cable, and am wondering if anyone can help with some Apple TV info.

First off, I'm a techno moron. Type slowly, and assume I know nothing.

For the most part, all we watch consistently are The Daily Show, Survivor, Amazing Race and some sports. I am under the impression that Apple TV takes what I'm watching on my Ipad, and puts it on my TV. Is this true? If not, is there another way to watch those shows?

Would I be better served to buy a Smart TV, or is regular ok?

Any advice would be awesome. I am Canadian, so my content may be limited. Info from fellow Canadians would be awesome.

You can use AirPlay to project what you're watching on your iPad onto the TV that the Apple TV is connected to. There are also a ton of apps that will allow you to watch your shows without using your iPad. I believe there's a Comedy Central app and a maybe a CBS app. If there aren't those individual apps, there's definitely a Hulu app that you can use. If you cut cable, you would have to watch your shows via Hulu and would have to wait 24 hrs after they air.

One thing with some of the network-based apps, you need to enter information about your cable subscription. But there is nothing stating that you couldn't 'borrow' that info from your friend, neighbor, BIL, etc.

One network that is going outside this paradigm is HBO Now. You can get a subscription to that from HBO directly for like $15/month.

I think you're going to get the best responses in this thread: We've Cut The Cable

Lots of folks posting in there with deep levels of knowledge on this topic, between optimal HD Antenna and subscription services via something like an Apple TV, etc. and some posts on more advanced techniques such as 3rd party software like the Kodi environment. Everything and anything in between in that thread.
