I know i'm really new to this, but I'm going to petition the clubs I shoot at to implement a 'one let down per target rule'. Holy moly some of these guys :deadbanana:

:lol: I hear ya on that.  Slow pacing is a killer with 3D around here.  At least here in IBO country, there's a 2 letdown rule max.

I will say - learning how to identify when to letdown is a massively underrated skill.

I hosted our 3D state championship last weekend.  Christ almighty this is a ton of work to pull off, but guys were raving about the course.  We have a couple of former world champs that came and even they said I threw them for a loop.   :thumbup:

Some pics to show you just how different it is here on the better coast.  ;)

some neat pics int here, Ned. I like that the shots are really realistic. Although, since I HATE snakes, i don't like the lack of trails carved out. :lol:

:lol:  they're semi-carved out.  I have the poison ivy and cut up legs to prove it.  I'm such an idiot going out there cutting trails with shorts on.   :help:

Negative, but following a few guys in the gram that are there. Planning on going next year... That enough notice for you? :excited:

@Men-in-Cleats, hide you family
Not worried, that tracking device I planted on you in Sactown should still have some battery life.  I'll be able to hide the family and my beer.

Have a 3D shoot this weekend and I start shooting for the local gun/archery shop. I get free range use and products at 10% above cost instead of full retail. Not a bad deal

Ended up with the second most points in BHFS  with 744(17.7 avg). Interesting twist this time, NONE of the 3D targets had vitals marked with paint/spot. So when you walk up on a 3D lion 54 yards away, there's no orange dot to set your pin on. You need to know where the vitals are on all the different animals.

Was a little tough at first, but I really enjoyed it and it absolutely will help with hunting. Everyone's scores were down this time because of that, but it was a blast again.

Best shots;

74 yard shot at a wildebeest, both arrows in the vitals, one in the heart.

46 yards on a impala, double heart.

USA Archery hosts these virtual tournaments where clubs around the country can host a shoot at their local club and then send in the results to USA archery to form the national "tournament".  It's not the same as doing 1 big national, but a cool way to keep competing.  Our club has been doing the past couple so me and my wife jumped in the last one a few months back.

Last night I got a certificate and an autographed pic from Brady Ellison for winning the last tournament.  I had no idea!   :towelwave:

A quick update from this newb, which will meander some. My boy and I took hunter's safety this spring, which was a big step for someone who has never hunted. I have my sights set on learning this year and bow hunting next year. We're members of a local bow club, so have been shooting pretty regularly (usually once per week). Still figuring things out. My son (10) is still all over the board (shooting a Diamond Infinite Edge bow at something like 18 or 20# draw weight) on accuracy. The two of us shot our club's 3D course yesterday (under heavy barrage of mosquitos) and he did pretty well overall. On the advice of other dads/bow hunters I'm not giving too much instruction (we both took a beginning class in Jan./Feb.) since he gets frustrated when I do. I like that him and I are both learning and spending time together figuring it out.

For me, I feel like I'm all over the board too, though somewhat more dialed in at least under 30 yds. Shooting a maxed out 60# Matthews Chill-R, which poundage wise feels about where I want to be right now. I just posted a thread over at AT on my draw length/form, so feel free to weigh in on that too. I shot a non-scored 3D round with a couple of members last week (they're in league, I just tagged along), and killed one of the dude's arrow with my first Robin Hood, which was pretty cool. I shot from the markers that were mostly in the 20-30 yd range and hit most animals in a kill zone, though struggled on the turkeys. Am working on just using back tension to fire my thumb release, which is mostly going well, though my shots sometimes seem to take forever.

Looking ahead, I am lucky to have a few places to hunt with my brother, BIL, and cousin all having places to go, and have offered to help me learn. Am doing research on everything from camo gear to broadheads to tree stands. So much to learn, and have been listening to Dudley's Nocked On and Gritty Bowman podcasts pretty often. Any other recommended resources are appreciated.

Your DL is way too short - what's the bow set at now?  I wouldn't be shocked if you could add a full inch or more (always hard to say just based on pics).  That will help you keep your shoulders down (will likely need to raise peep) and keep your  bow arm straight.  I'm willing to bet your sight picture is short/choppy where the pin is dancing around like you're hyped up on caffeine, which is typical for a short DL.

Do you have a local Mathews dealer close to you that can swap the mods?  The best thing to do is take it to a shop that has the mods in stock and have them install and let you try them before you buy.  Otherwise, you can try to hunt/peck for used mods on AT or eBay and just experiment.  The cams have modules in them that will adjust the DL for you.  They come in 1/2" increments and covers 23-30" for the Chill R.

I'll warn you right now - the AT crowd can get a little crazy with the DL debates...   So don't get too frustrated if you start getting advice all over the map.  Think about golf and all of the pros and their various swing styles... same thing applies here.  There's a general rule of thumb, but most people have their own style given the different body makeups, physical limitations, etc.

Some of my favourite threads.

Here's a summary of what is going to happen;

"Height divided by 2.5"

"Wingspan divided by 2"

"stand square to a wall and touch it with your fingertips"

"Take your age, multiply by the square root of your waist size and ad 1.5" "

The thread will end with, "go by a local pro shop and get measured"

HTH

Also - beware of nuts&bolts.  He means well, but he can get kind of wacky.  I fell victim to his methods a few years ago - he had me shooting a DL that was 3/4" too short.

Thanks Ned. You're quick analysis confirms my suspicions. I barely know what the parts of the bow are, but it sounds like some hardware upgrades are necessary to get it right? Does this mean new strings, etc. too? I'd rather get it right now than continue to develop bad habits.

The mods are a simple swap on the cams via a couple of bolts. You won’t need new strings/cables.

I havent swapped mods on a Chill so I’m not sure if the bow will need to be pressed before you can change them.

Proper DL is critical to good form. You’re smart to address this now.

Just went through some rounds out to 60 yards. All setup for elk hunting this week in Utah. Going for elk and antelope from Sunday-Friday. Shooting archery Monday/Tuesday then rifle the next three days if needed.  :banned:

You nerds still flingin' arrows?

Indoor season is ramping up here.  Working on my setup (I hate how different it is from outdoors) and hoping the shot process I developed over the summer translates well to the indoor game.

Considering doing 3 national events this year: Lancaster (definite), Vegas, and Cincinnati.

I am shooting and volunteering at our club's Father's Day Shoot this weekend. My son's bow (an adjustable Diamond Infinite Edge) was adjusted poundage and draw length earlier this spring as he continues to gain height and muscle (almost 14). I was all set for my second bow hunting season last fall but had a freak collapsed lung right after Labor Day that put me in the hospital (including surgery) for a week. More or less fully recovered and looking forward to this hunting season. Have shot a few 3D rounds at the club this year, and have a 10 yard range in the home basement to keep the rust off, but always looking for improvements. Getting back into lifting and working out has helped with stability and consistency. Hope you all are well!
