Who can they trade LJ to??
I've thought that as well - though that probably wouldn't be as well-received by teammates as waiting until week 10. It might seem to some to be quitting on them. However, I think it would be a better negotiating tactic.
you could certainly add the Titans to that list. He'll sign though. We've all seen this play out a million times. He wants to be paid LT money but he's not going to get it. He'll "settle" for something in the neighborhood of 15-20 mil guaranteed. He'll have missed training camp (no big deal) and will start off the season freshy fresh and ready to roll!
Most Chiefs fans I know aren't upset with either. We know the deal. Went through it with Priest, Gonzalez, etc.. This isn't anything new. I think what most people outside of KC are missing, is that LJ sucks at blocking and pass catching. He wants to be paid as if he can do those two things well, and he flat out sucks at both. That's why he's not getting paid what he wants, and why we aren't pissed about it.
Isn't Larry Johnson a running back? A running back is not supposed to be an all-around catching piece of the puzzle. Blocking, sure. Catching is what wide receivers and tight ends are for. Larry Johnson runs the ball and runs it well. He should be paid as he has shown he can run the ball, not just for a year, but for a few now.Larry Johnson did his part and not complain when he was playing for the lower salaries the last three+ years. It is his time to get paid and he should based on past consistent production. That is how most contracts work, save rookies.And, 2,000 yards for 2 straight years, with his catching yards increasing each of the last three years does not deserve a new contract? The only reason he does not is if he has 2+ years left on his current one and even that rule should be broken due to his last three years.
Nobody said he didn't deserve a new contract. He does, and has been offered one. But not the amount that he's asking for. The amount that he's asking for is what a COMPLETE RB would get. You know, one that doesn't whiff on blocks and get the QB killed, or drop every other swing pass thrown his way.
Complete RB? What is a complete RB? If teams are looking for mirror images of Tomlinson and going by that barometer than teams in the NFL are going more towards fantasy than actual reality. Larry Johnson is a complete RB by all accounts that I know of.What was the previous contract he was offered?
Nobody knows exactly what was offered, or what he's asking for. All speculation, but from what I've heard, he was offered around 14-16mil guaranteed, and is asking for twice that.To me, a complete RB runs, blocks, and catches the ball well. LJ does one of three. I'm not saying he has to do all three at the level LT does...but that's the type of money he's asking for. And that's the problem, and why he's not in camp. If you don't expect a mirror image of LT, and nobody does...why should he get paid like one?Look at the contracts that other top RB's have gotten the past few years. You'll see the issue.
It's diificult to compare past contracts with new demands. The cap has changed and is going to continue to rise. Remember, James Brown didn't get paid like the best ever RB when you look at what he made. But the economies of scale have changed. What LJ is asking for isn't really the same LT money when you factor it all in. But to suggest he doesn't catch the ball well? Actually he does. And he does it better than most backs. Blocking is an issue however.
Of course the contracts rise each year. But we're talking double the money that the top backs, outside of LT, were getting just a couple years ago. The cap didn't double, did it?And no, LJ sucks at catching the ball. Yes, he caught 41 passes. What you don't see there is all the drops. I watched every game. It got really old to watch, especially seeing how I owned him last year as well as being a Chiefs homer.
We're still not seeing eye to eye. LJ is worth considerably more than most because he's better than most. And I won't say he sucks at catching the ball. In fact he has one of the best YPC (over 10.0) since he's been in the NFL of any back. Even the great ones drop passes.It seems obvious from your post that you don't like LJ very much. To each their own. I can't argue/debate with hate. You don't like him so we'll let it go at that.
