Are You a Swifty? (2 Viewers)

Default Swifty - my daughter has been listening to her 10+ years. Catchy songs - I'm in my Lover era.

By default... I have 2 daughters (19 and 13) that love her.

Why does having daughters that like an artist require you to be a fan? There are plenty of music tastes that my kids have that I don't. I don't get this "default" requirement

I'll field this one.....

As a father of 4 boys and 1 girl, I'm going to tell you that as a guy - just a normal, big dumb animal man - relating to your sons is the easiest thing in the world. By 6 months old, my sons were innately laughing at farts. By 12 months, they were all saying "BALL" and clapping for a ball like a pudgy bald man camping out at the three-point line at the local Y. By 2, we're wrestling around the house like a Battle Royal. Bonding between father and son is the most natural thing in nature and is helped along by common ground interests like sports, big machinery, funny movies, driving fast, making funny noises and appreciating a beautiful woman.

Bonding with a daughter? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, not so easy, sir. Unless you've mastered it, I've attempted to bond with my daughter in every possible way imaginable since she was born and I'm hitting a clip that would make Mario Mendoza look like Tony Gwynn. I've learned all my daughter's dolls' names, let her dye my hair blue, wear the USWNT jerseys, coached her soccer team, let her paint my nails, agreed to get her a cat and man.....it hasn't gotten me very far.

But you know what helped me break some ice? Taylor Swift. Know what helped me get permission to enter her room, a room more tightly guarded than Fort Knox? Color printouts of Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodriguez and Tate McCrae. And last week, my daughter actually emerged from her room, came to find me - ME!!!! - to tell me that Sabrina Carpenter's new deluxe release of her album had a duet of her popular song Please Please Please with the great Dolly Parton and wanted me to know about it and give her my thoughts. And buddy, if I weren't prepared at that moment to field that conversation with her and know exactly what she was talking about, she might not have spoken to me for weeks!

Can't wait for your Lil Uzi Vert phase.

Pretty sure if I turned on a Taylor Swift song in my car, mine would bash a hole in my skull, endangering her own life in the process, if that's what it took to reach the screen to change it.

The wife and I recently found her Era's tour on youtube and threw it on to see what we were missing. I watched pretty solidly for 1/2 hour and then started fast forwarding and stopping along the way until the end. Needless to say, I don't get it. It was not entertaining. Now, I am not a fan but have watched a lot of Carrie Underwood. I have enjoyed watching her perform.

Extremely talented musician. Just not my type of music.

For instance, I usually listen to Iggy Pop and the Stooges, DK, Ramones, Misfits, Sex Pistols, etc.

Sometimes I'll branch off and go Led Zep, Doors, Who, Pink Floyd, Kinks, etc.

You are listing off some legendary musicians and artists and some of the best who have ever made music.....

The problem is almost none of those listed are ever going to make new music so you're stuck listening to a catalog of tunes that never refreshes and that's fine if that's the musical pool lane you want to swim in for the rest of your life. Plenty of people feel this way.

Swift and her peers are putting out some amazing music and boy are some of them prolific. My one knock on Swift is her voluminous writing and production is impossible to keep up with. I'm 2 albums behind and I LOVE her work. I feel this way about Neil Young and Bob Dylan to name a couple.....too much music, man. Let us miss you.

One other thing about Swift, especially on her newer albums - her collaborative work with other musicians is terrific. I believe it's a great sign of respect to an artist's talent when you see a robust line of accomplished musicians agreeing to work on songs and albums together. Take a peek at some of the talent working with Swift the last few years. It's impressive.

All very fair points. I listed the biggies so people would know where my musical tastes lie. I listen to contemporary rock too(Mastodon for example), but not many people would know them.

This is more of a general statement and not directed at you, but her demographic is literally everyone. You don't get to this level of popularity by just appealing to one or two demographics. Sure, she appeals to certain ones more than others, but I think some, including here in this thread, still have this outdated/meathead male view of who her fans are. I mean, if you all hear is Shake It Off and Bad Blood (I am a fan, but I dislike this song), I get thinking it's your basic pop, but her catalogue is deep and has a lot of variety. Her first three Album of the Year grammys were for three albums that were totally different from one another.

In short, if you (not you, the general "you") think her music is just for young girls or just girls in general, your head is up your backside. (and that doesn't mean one has to like her music, as we all like what we like)

I hear ya. And I think the term "Swiftie" (which apparently is the correct spelling) is kinda dumb, so while I a fan, I do not claim to be a Swiftie.

I would imagine the diehard Swifties are the unhinged fans on Twitter who think anyone who listens to the original versions of album since re-recorded and re-released as Taylor's Versions are not "real" fans, as if Twitter knuckleheads are the arbiter of such things.

I have seen so many great live shows that trying to rank them would be next to impossible, although seeing Pink Floyd at Arrowhead Stadium in '94 when I was still too young to legally drink is probably still what I'd put at the very top, but Swift's Eras tour show I saw in Nashville in May 2023 would be pretty high as well. I looked around numerous times just to see all the people (70,000+ !!!_), and the joy and focus on the faces of nearly everyone really stood out.

I know I said I was one by default, but I guess it's more that I'm Swiftie-adjacent. I like her music. Not all, but a lot. @Judge Smails is so right about All Too Well (10 min version). It's more about me connecting with my daughters. Yes, we have movies, TV shows, and streaming shows, but this is just another way for us to bond. My wife went with my girls to the Eras Tour in Santa Clara. I secretly wanted them to sell their tix for a huge profit, but didn't say anything because I was happy that they got to see their favorite artist. I don't own any Swiftie dad shirts, but thought it was very cool of the dads/stepdads/father-figures that did wear them along with the bracelets to the concerts. I did see the Eras Tour concert movie in the theater as well as on Disney+. Now that my oldest is in college, I get teary-eyed at times when a TS song comes on the radio or on a Spotify playlist that I've created with my girls.
