Are you really a football fan? (1 Viewer)

If all I had was football I would be a happy clam. The only thing else I get into with regularity is MMA. Other than that I'm a fair weather fan of all WI sports. The good news is I'm watching a lot of sports as of late. :D

I follow other sports to greater or lesser degrees, but my relationship to football is purely visceral. I do follow the Tigers, and that goes back to watching Al Kaline and George Kell doing the games on a little black & whote in my bedroom or listing to Ernie Harwell on the AM dial. Sitting in the bleacher seats for the drunken fan riots in the 80s and the 35-5 Tigs in ’84.The NBA is in a lockout. It is? Yawn. It’s Hockey time. It is? Call me for the playoffs – there’s nothing like playoff hockey intensity, but regular season is dull.Nothing gets to me like football. My wife still makes fun of the way I would shake when Barry Sanders ran, as if I was transmitting my nervous energy to him over the wires for one more insane stop-start-spin. And of course, I was. I should be in Canton. The changing leaves, moody clouds, apple cider – this is just an amazing time. And it just FEELS like football. I want to hit someone, and drive them through the drywall. (I did hip check someone in the office once, but that was years ago). What a season. Won’t be anythign like it … until next year.

So if I had to pick one sport it might be football, but it's not because of the NFL.

Basketball is my favorite sport, but when you combine fantasy football with the NFL putting out a better product, the regular season actually being worthwhile, NFL being much less of a time investment...I would give up all else for football.

I actually have flipped to NFL football over college football over the last 5 or so years, but still its American football by a long ways over all other sports. When my life got too crazy , I can remember not following baseball or basketball or any other form of entertainment (television, nusic, movies). Football was always followed not mater what I had going.

NFL by far for me....lost intrest in baseball in the 70's with unliited FA/Steinbrenner/strikes etc, lost intreset in pro basketball when it changed from a (somewhat) finess game to basketbrawl, I love hockey but only live as you can see "whats happening" live but not on tube where they only follow the puck....still love the Olympics though, especially track and field, IMO the only pure individual sport IMO (except maybe swimming), ....am hoping that the rumored womens nude pro beach volleyball takes shape, as I could likely get very interested in it.... :excited:

I've basically made this deal with my wife, although we haven't really come out and formally said it, but it's what it's boiled down to:

I get to watch all the pro football my heart desires (and my wife tolerates it)

I can occasionally watch a hockey game (Devils) fan, but will turn it off if she really doesn't want to watch it (except if it's the playoffs)

Watch basically no baseball or basketball.

Get to watch the Triple Crown races.

In return she's to watch no reality tv such as the housewives of blah blah or jersey shore in my presence.

Of course when the other isn't around we're free to watch what we wish.

So essentially, yes I could give up all other sports and only watch football.
Tell your wife to get a job/2nd job and use the 'when the other isn't around' time, with my blessings.

Definitely a Football fan alone out of the major sports.

I quit watching MLB after the strike that cancelled a season - prior to that strike I was into MLB in a BIG way (especially the Cubs and the Braves, which teams I watched with Harry Caray calling the Cubs and even followed triple-A ball teams, but that strike made me so mad I didn't watch a game for roughly 10 years. Now I've been dis-engaged from MLB so long I don't even know who the top players are (in my mind, Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz are still the best starting rotation I recall, but then I haven't watched MLB for almost 20 years now)

I despise NBA-style basketball, and won't watch it. College I watch a little during March Madness; NBA, never.

MLS bores me to tears, ditto NASCAR, ditto PGA.

I do like Olympic/international speed skating. I enjoy the odd NHL game (I used to watch minor league hockey in Charlotte - the Knights - and took in a few Macon Whoopie games when the Whoopie were still in existence here in Macon, GA). Yes, that was the REAL name of the minor-league hockey team here. LOL

All other major sports (MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, PGA) could disappear from the face of the planet tomorrow and I wouldn't shed a single tear.

Yah, I like to watch fights in the Octagon, too. I'm a green belt in Matsubayashi-Ryu (subset of Shorin-Ryu) Okinawan Karate and my kids are students of it, too. We also like to watch Hong Kong Kung-Fu flicks and other martial-arts. But I don't think MMA is a major sport just yet, though FOX is carrying their heavy weight title-bout in November IIRC. MMA may become a major spectator sport in the next 10 years, though - I can see it replacing high-profile boxing matches in the public consciousness (to orchestrate events like "The Thriller in Manilla" and etc is what I mean by high-profile).My :2cents: on MMA

I could give a rat's ### about sports other than NFL football. I am shamelessly fair-weather for local sports teams, and I usually only sit down to watch a non-football game when a) the local team is in it and b) it's the playoffs. Sometimes also c) the finals.

However, I will watch preseason football. I will watch bad MNF / SNF match-ups. It really doesn't matter, if it's NFL football.

I'll watch some college football if I happen to be somewhere where it's on (a party, at a bar, etc.) but I don't go out of my way to catch it.

Cricket

Soccer

Football

........JK

Basketball IMO has the best athletes, but is the worst marketed and is extremely diluted.

Hockey is the best to watch but lacks elite athleticism and that for some reason I need when watching a sport.

Football is the best of both worlds. great athletes...great marketing... great game in general, great drama. and fantasy football puts it over the top

I will say if the NBA breaks down and all the players go to Europe(ala 8 team champions league) ...that will be my new favorite sport.

I would say right now it goes

College FB

NFL

College BB

NBA

NHL

MLB

I honestly think the biggest draw for me is the scouting of players and watching guys blow up on the big stage. I love following high school recruiting as well.

I've found myself over the years falling in love with teams of a bunch of prospects that I like rather than a certain team. I love Wisconsin Rams Heat Braves Blah blah blah... But over the years the Atlanta Hawks (Josh Smith , Joe Johnson , Jeff Teague , Al Horford, Etc) Detroit Lions (Calvin, Jahvid, Stafford, Delmas) Alabama (Trent Richardson, Julio Jones , Rolando McClain, Marcel Dareus ) and Obviously the Oakland Raiders (DHB, McFadden, McClain, you know the story) have caught my eye and I root for them (behind closed doors lol) ...I'm just a big sucker for elite athleticism.

1. Football (NFL > College) -- Fantasy football has nothing to do with the NFL being my favorite sport.

2. UFC (Sometimes this sport pisses me off when you get the two sweaty mens on the ground dry humping each other type of fight)

3. Hockey (Live Only)

4. Boxing (About 25% of the bouts)

The rest of the sports (especially baseball) could fall off the face of the earth and it wouldn't bother me one iota. :banned:

1 tie - Football and Hockey.

Grew up in So Cal. Never much of a Rams fan when they were there. Big Chiefs fan from age 11-16. Best friend six houses down had older brother drafted by Chiefs Rd 1 after SB IV win out of USC. Got to meet L.Hunt, Stenerud and Podolak when I was 12 after a Charger game.

Now a big Jets fan, but I always liked them because of Namath. Have twins that went to HS with Sanchez. Three other guys from that HS team have made the NFL.

And like the Chargers also. My younger son's first game was the Colts-Chargers game when Manning was picked 6 times and Sproles ran back two kicks in first half. Not a bad first game to go to!

We now sit in the end zone with our Boise St season tix.

Was a puck fan at age 5. Sat three rows behind goal judge box for both games when LeClair scored OT winners, MONT vs LA Cup. Gave Roy choke sign in a game three late and he stared me down. All-time best ever fan moment. LOL. Ducks season tix until I moved last year. Sat 20 rows up on face off dot when Teemu skated Cup right towards me. Nothing cooler than that. Partied with Steve Thomas' family after game 7 of the NJ/ANA Cup.

3. Baseball - Huge Angels fan. Went to local Von's grocery store for player appearance in 1970. Two no names at the time. The ball I got signed was from a guy named Nolan Ryan is hist first year with Angels. Of course, I played with and lost the ball within a few months. I still have my brother's Sandy Alomar signed ball from that day.

Went to game 6/7 of ARZ/NYY WS. It was delayed a week (9/11) and I happened to be at Shandler's AFL so we scrounged tix. Two great games. Then went to every Angels 2002 playoff/WS game except those in MINN. Went to NY and SF. Game Six rally was beyond awesome. I hooked up for six tickets game 7 at face and sold my own two tix to SF fans that drove down the night before for $1500. Priceless.

4. Hoops is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down there now. Big Lakers fan, but don't follow as closely as I did when I listened to Chick on the radio.

I think the reason football is dominating every other sport is because fantasy is a PERFECT compliment to football. 16 weeks with the bulk of the action coming on a Sunday means you can squeeze it into your normal schedule b/c the routine is simple:

Sunday: Watch Games

Mon-Tues: Waiver research

Wed-Sat: WDIS Research

82 games in basketball and 100+ games in baseball is too messy when you compare it to football. I used to watch basketball way back in the day. I rather watch the combine and the NFL Draft instead of basketball nowadays.

Are you guys really football fans? Is football hands-down your favorite sport? Or do you like it because of fantasy football? I was thinking about this the other day and thought I'd ask you guys the same question(s) I asked myself:

Which sport is your favorite? Would you give up watching all other sports if you could choose to watch only one sport? Chicago sports has had its ups and downs and I follow most of our teams casually.

Football: Bears

Baseball: Cubs, Sox

Basketball: Bulls

Hockey: Blackhawks

Soccer: Fire

Arena Football: Rush

Minor League Hockey: Wolves

Women's Basketball: Sky

Are there other sports you would choose to watch instead like golf, tennis, auto racing, etc?

If I had to choose to watch only one of these teams and give up all others I realized I had two answers. If I was to give watching other sports for only one year, I would easily give up the Bears this year and watch only the Chicago Blackhawks. If I was to have to pick one for the rest of my life, I think I would choose the Bears as my only sport to watch, regardless of whether I am playing fantasy football or not.

Thoughts?
There are other sports beyond Football? Really? I can watch college football to some extent. The NBA is meh. College Basketball is only interesting to me for March Madness. And to be honest, I only really started watching NFL in my teen years BECAUSE of fantasy football. I didn't watch football hardly at all but played fantasy football one year because a friend asked me to. Now the NFL is almost all there is.

Fantasy Football

College Football

Basketball is just above all else..

Football-- is KING! I love watching and playing most sports, but nothing else occupies my attention year round like football.

Baseball--Once the sun starts to come out and I hear Richard and Bert it just gets in my blood.

Hockey-Same as baseball here. Once baseball is done and the icemakers start making the rounds I play a ton and go to as many games as possible.

Then I like to add in participating in sports like hunting and fishing while adding in baseball and football. Nothing like a baseball game on the radio in the boat or the Vikings on a terribly small TV in the icehouse. Can't beat checking drive charts from the deer stand or the duck blind either.

This poll is flawed.

Yah, I'd give up all other sports for football. In a heartbeat. I have virtually nothing invested in any of them to start with.

I'm a football fan. Not a sports fan. I barely listen to sports radio or turn on ESPN between February and August, save for April (NFL Draft time).

Football. NFL. Done.

Good posting. I follow the NBA draft, trades and news almost as much as the NFL, but not for fantasy. I hate NBA fantasy, horrible set up with the categories and too many games. NFL weekly lineups is perfect for fitting fantasy sports into everyday life.

They key is not to spread yourself too thin. By that I mean with different sports, all being dynasty. That's why I only play in one baseball league each year, that being my dynasty league. I play in 9 dynasty football leagues, but the research done for football can be used for all my teams. You might say, what's the problem since baseball and football aren't really played at the same time? In my baseball league we can have minor league players, high school players, and college players, so research is year round. Same for dynasty football leagues, especially those that can roster college development players. If you only play in dynasty leagues like I do, spreading yourself too thin can do two things. It can cause a rift between you and your better half and it can make you not as effective in all your leagues in all sports.

NFL #1

I've started watching some College Football when I hear from the NFL shows that there's an NFL draft prospect playing.

NFL wins are more important than fantasy wins.

Baseball and basketball I'm not sure if I could name 3 active players from each, I'll try:

Baseball:

1. Poohole - my gut says that spelling is off or it means something else in his language.

2. Ichiro - is his first name Hideki? Haiku?

3. Derek Jeter

4. I can't name a 4th, I do know there's a pitcher with long hair and looks like he's 12 and pitcher with a black Grizzly Adams beard.

Basketball:

1. Kobe Bryant

2. LeBron James

3. Does Shaq still play?

Golf, Nascar, Tennis = crap I have to wait through till they get back to NFL coverage.

Fantasy Football

Fantasy Baseball

NFL, MLB, NBA, Professional Wrestling, Bowling, Golf, Tennis, Dancing With The Stars, American Idol, etc. etc......it all plays second fiddle to Fantasy Football and Baseball.

I love NFL Football. But, I also love MLB, Majors in golf, Olympics (summer and winter)and Tennis. Just a sports fan in general.

1 NFL, MLB

2 Golf Majors

3 Olymipics

4 Tennis

Wouldn't want to choose. It's close between game 7 of WS and Super Bowl. Every year we have a Super Bowl Party. So, the food and drink, along with the game lean it slightly in favor of football.

MMA first. I watch every event I can and study as many fighters as I can. This is the easiest sport to make money on by far if you know your stuff.Football second. Fantasy makes it more fun so I rarely watch college ball. I've really just been a NFL fan since I was 5 and its stuck with me.
Give College FF a try. Been in a league on CBS the past 2 years.

1 - miami hurricanes football

2 - nfl and fantasy football

3 - other college football games

4 - the occasional mlb/nba/ncca basketball/tennis/nhl/golf game. Used to really be into MLB and NBA but just don't have time to put into watching and following it like I used to.

I like it when they say a team is going "from right to left on your radio dial".
But what if I'm sitting on the other side of the stadium? or in the end zone bleachers?

There's something fascinating about curling. Whenever I channel surf and come across a curling match, watching grown men scrub furiously at the ice in front of a sliding rock, I just have to watch and see where it stops. Curling is on my list somewhere, I'm not sure where. Definitely ahead of basketball.

1) Baseball

2) Basketball

3) NCAA Football

4) NFL

5) NHL

The NFL is making me enjoy the game less and less each year with more stupid replay rules, and the insane BS of what roughing the passer has become today. Also a DB can't breathe on a WR anymore. Although football is more popular than ever I think the quality of the regular season is getting worse and worse each and every year.

The NFL was #2 for me (baseball will always be my #1) for a very very long time. But the last few years I found myself enjoying the college game much more. And the NBA...what a lousy time for a lock-out. I have been a loyal original Heat fan and I am starving for some Heat basketball as I only have the Dolphins and Panthers playing right now and that is painful to watch.

Basketball is a fast action packed game with IMO the best athletes in the world playing in the NBA. A truly amazing game.

I still treasure my Sundays and still watch 2-3 games and MNF (if it is a great matchup), but the luster is fading fast.

If I ranked my sports and teams:

1. Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball

1a. Boston Red Sox

3. New York Knicks

3a. New York Giants

5. Detroit Red Wins

(yea, I'm all over the map, but I'm pretty passionate.)

I couldn't see myself giving up any sport, except for hockey. All though, the lockout in the NBA really isn't bothering me that much.

If I had to pick one sport it would obviously be football... however if it was Football or All other sports, that would be a very very tough call! I think I'd rather baseball, basketball, hockey, etc so I'd have it more year round... but it would be tempting to just take football.

NFL by a slight margin over college football. those who overlook college are missing out.

Used to be a big baseball fan, but anymore it bores me. I think baseball is much more fun to play than watch. That said, the college World Series is money. much better than MLB, imo. And the Little League WS is entertaining as well.

I like the NBA, and again, those that overlook it are missing out. Basketball is a great sport. the matchups alone make it fun to watch.

March Madness and good college matchups are fun to watch.

NHL is alright, but minor league hockey rocks! some of the best sporting events i've ever been to were Western Hockey League games, Tri-City Americans v. Spokane Chiefs!!! GO AMERICANS!!!
