Raiders' Offense Looks Inept

By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - Skeptics snickered when Raiders coach Art Shell turned his offense over to a bed and breakfast operator who hadn't coached in the NFL in more than a decade.

Yet even the biggest doubters couldn't have imagined Oakland's performance under coordinator Tom Walsh would be this bad.

Six points, no touchdowns, 15 sacks, seven turnovers, a league-low 291 yards, and three fumbled snaps in two games have made the Raiders the laughingstock of the league.

Running back LaMont Jordan summed up the season best after the team was outscored 55-6 in two games: "The best thing about the season thus far is the fact that we have a bye week and we don't have to play (Sunday)."

Unfortunately for the Raiders, they do have 14 games left. And unless Walsh and Shell alter their philosophy or find a new offensive line, there's little hope for a rapid turnaround.

Shell promised a return to the past when he was hired, with a focus on power-running and deep-strike passing. But that doesn't work when it's Robert Gallery and Paul McQuistan blocking against modern zone blitzes, instead of Hall of Famers such as Shell and Gene Upshaw against 1970s defenses.

The Raiders have been blitzed on 33 of their 61 pass plays, according to STATS LLC. But they've utilized few of the tools most teams use to counter that.

They have thrown only two passes to running backs, completing none; have not used a single shotgun formation; have called only one rollout; and have used predominantly five- and seven-step drops that give the defense plenty of time to pressure quarterbacks Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter.

"Right now, we've got one area of our team that's not playing well right now," Shell said. "But I truly believe we're going to get this thing turned. I'm a very optimistic person."

Shell said he would like to throw more passes to his backs and might use the shotgun next week, but it shouldn't have taken that long to consider those options. Then again, Walsh didn't face many zone blitzes when he ran the Hansen Guest Ranch and was the mayor of Swan Valley, Idaho. :lmao: :bag:

Even though Walsh hadn't coached in the NFL since being fired by the Raiders along with Shell following the 1994 season, Shell said his old friend was his first choice because he was comfortable with him.

Since leaving the NFL, Walsh was head coach for two seasons at Idaho State and worked as director of operations and coach of a minor league franchise in Mobile, Ala. He has been out of football since 1999, with his only connections being a few announcing assignments, designing playbooks for video games and informal meetings with college coaching staffs who came to his ranch.

"It's not like I ever went away," Walsh said during training camp. "You know, I could be mayor, on the governor's board for tourism council in Idaho or whatever, that doesn't mean that my brain was erased. If you're out there bucking hay, you're still going to think about (football)."

To be fair, the Raiders did try to hire offensive guru Bobby Petrino from Louisville. But when he turned down their offer to become head coach, owner Al Davis went with Shell, who had been out of coaching himself since 2000.

The offense has also been hamstrung because its second best playmaker has been inactive the first two games despite being healthy. Receiver Jerry Porter hasn't played after clashing with Shell over offseason workout programs and demanding a trade at the start of training camp.

While this feud has little in common with Marcus Allen's benching that was one of the lasting memories from Shell's first stint as Raiders coach, it is starting to divide the team.

Some defensive players called for Porter's return after the latest loss, with safety Jarrod Cooper offering this not-so-ringing endorsement: "No one's got to like him, no one's got to love him, you don't even have to look at him. If you put his uniform on him and put him on the football field, he's going to do something. He's not an idiot. He may act like an idiot, but he's not."

Shell's right that the blocking is a problem, but it's hard to justify benching one of your best players and starting Alvis Whitted when the team is struggling this much.

The biggest problem on the offensive line is that the team's best blockers might be on the coaching staff with Shell, Jackie Slater and Irv Eatman. Four of the starters are in different spots than they played last year and Gallery has struggled as much in his natural spot at left tackle as he did last year on the right side.

The Raiders took Gallery with the No. 2 overall pick in 2004 ahead of Larry Fitzgerald, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger and Tommie Harris. It's the biggest bust in a stretch of weak drafts that have generated only one Pro Bowler since 2000, punter Shane Lechler.

Shell knows that overcoming those drafts will take more than a coaching change, but that's little comfort for Raiders fans who haven't enjoyed a winning season since 2002.

"It takes time," Shell said. "It doesn't happen overnight."
LINKYep.... we're pretty much on the clock.

When you hang your hopes on a guy who was asking you whether you want your pancakes with blueberries or strawberries rather than asking if he should keep the running back in to help pick up the blitz, you are in for a long year.

Art Shell looks lost and doesn't have the guyts to say he is overmatched and the game has passed him by. Why should he? Al Davis has been overmatched and the game has passed him by too. So why would his coach come out and say it?

This is a trainwreck, chemical plant explosion, and beachfront tsunami all at once.

Poor talent, poor coaching, poor management, no way this gets turned around before there's a new president in the white house.

Oh man....that is great. Thanks for starting my day off with a laugh.Well done my man!

It's a shame that the offense seems SO inept because the defense doesn't look all that bad - at least, judging by what I saw them do against Baltimore last week(granted, the Ravens ain't the Colts). Their schedule softens up a little, so maybe they can find a way to get their running game going (doesn't look like many teams are going to run much on the Ravens or SD this year)

It is entirely up to the players I think if they improve on offense. Maybe Andrew Walter can get the OLine motivated to block somebody. Who else is going to do it?

Seriously WTF. I mean come on, this is not that complicated. To insinuate the football is soooooooo much more complicated than is was 10 or 20 years ago is a little bit :bs:I mean they get to line up 11 defenders against 11 offensive players. Maybe their schemes are complicated and what-not but the Raiders have player the Ravens and the Chargers. The Bucs are getting killed worse than the Raiders are right now. Did Jon Gruden open up a nail salon over the summer or something? No, it happens that the Bucs have played the Ravens and the Falcons. Seriously, it's going to come to a point where the Raiders just line up 11 guys and try to push the defense backward.Vince Lombardi said best what I am trying to say here:

"Some people try to find things in this game that don't exist but football is only two things - blocking and tackling."
That said, I think the Raiders are on the clock. But I bet the win 2 or 3 games this season.

 <------Mr. Bryant, can you please re-name this smiley :artshell:

In preseason, as we saw hints of the offensive problems to come, the Raiders D was the one thing I was really encouraged by, especially against the run. Raw but opportunistic LBs; the line seemed to stuff the opposing team's running game credibly. Now, it's hard to tell whether this D is actually good against the run, as come the half in both of their two first games, the opposing team pretty much locked into clock control/vanilla running schemes exclusively, knowing the Raiders were not going to put points on the board. It's easy to stop the run when you know the other team is going to be doing it 3/4 downs.I think this team has the talent to turn things around, at least division-wise. KC is looking almost as horrid, Denver is up against NE in Foxboro, where the Pats play tough, and the Raiders next games are against Cleveland, San Fran, Denver and Arizona. If they work hard during the bye -- on cohesiveness aas much as on mechanics -- and find their poise and pride, it is conceivable (if not probable) that they can go into Week 8 at .500.We'll see if Shell has the leadership skills when it counts -- to bring his team together NOW.

awesome.
I know what's going to happen the next time Oakland plays. The very first camera shot of Artie and his unblinking punkin head is going to send everyone of us who had the good fortune of reading Stompin Toms post, into gales of laughter....making everyone in the room with us at the time think we're acting even weirder than normal.

I believe this has been brought up on other posts, but I think no one ever gave it serious thought. Can the Raiders use their first round pick to draft a Coach? Please? I mean just go up to the podium and say "We draft ____ Head Coach of _______, Al Davis has commanded it".

What are people going to do? Laugh at them harder? Right now the Raiders look more like The Empire of Star Wars. An old broken insane Emperor, an expressionless machine as a right hand man, and a group of guys that can be beaten by Ewoks!

Art Shell: "What is thy bidding my Master?"

While I fully agree this team is lost right now, I think it is early to totally write off Moss and Jordan both of whom still have a decent amount of value this year.

A few points to support this arguement:

- Playing San Diego and Baltimore to start out the season only magnified the Raiders Offensive problems

- The horrid start and the bye week mean that there will be a focus into the offensive game plan to take advantage of the blitzing defenses (i.e. quick reads and dump offs to Jordan).

- Aaron Brooks is out for a few weeks, so Andrew Walter is a huge improvement

- Softer schedule coming up, so hopefully we can start to see some offensive improvement

- The Defense and Special Teams at least have shown that they can keep the Raiders in some games

I know it is a reach, but as a Moss owner in one league and a Jordan owner in another, I can only hope that the softer schedule and the bye week will give me some value with these guys in the coming weeks....

Wasn't worth it to Al to keep Gruden. They got to the Super Bowl and lost to Gruden the next year with the team he helped put together, and it's been a disaster ever since.Al Davis is so smart.

A few months ago, as Raider Nation Podcast recently reminded me, Tom Walsh made the following comments when asked about his pending introduction to the latest defensive schemes: “There's a couple few wrinkles that change…It's like serving chicken. I mean one day it's fried, one day it's grilled, and the next day it's chicken marsala. And the next day it's something else. But it's still chicken. They still got 11 guys out there.” :loco:

Even this Steeler fan is finding it hard to hate the Raiders anymore. It's as pitiful as it was when the Clowns went on their three-year hiatus.I don't even feel like razzing my neighbor anymore with my Chris Berman-like pronounciation: "Da Rayderrrss....SUCK!!!"
