Wife and I are going to Aruba for a week in April. Thus far we have dinner reservations at El Gaucho, Madame Janettes, Wacky Wahoos and Flying Fishbone.

Any other recommendations?

You've basically hit on most of the really nice dinner options. It's not much to look at on the outside, but Chalet Suisse is also really good. At Madame Jeanette's, make sure you request a table outside. Great, great place. I'd also highly recommend the Hyatt Sunday brunch. It's like $40, but they have everything you can imagine and it's really good.

watch out for the shady police

we got our car broken into and when we filed a report they went through the list of things we would get back (medicine, swimming trunk, credit-cards" and what we wouldn't get back (camera, cash, Ipod)

the next day they showed up with everything they said they would recover

the Flying Fishbone has some good eating.. try to get a reservation at sunset

Driftwood (seafood restaurant where the husband-owner catches fish in the morning and wife-owner runs the restaurant with said fish)

There is also a restaurant at a golf course that is really awesome (excellent spicy ceviche early course) but I can't remember the name. Will ask wife.

when we were their we mostly cooked for ourselves (timeshare condo).

We went to Madame Jennette's. I can't recall what I ordered, it was okay but nothing terribly memorable.

If memory serves me, Flying Fishbone is way off the beaten path but everyone says it is worth the trip.

If you golf, you gotta play Tierra del Sol.

The one in the link. It's been 5 years ago (almost 6) that I was there, but it was really good.

:goodposting:

Going at the end of June with the girlfriend and the parents.

Question: I noticed the OP made reservations very far out...is this necessary/advised or are these the kinds of things you can do when you get there at most restaurants?

I'm going for a week in early Sept.

Any suggestions/recommendations for dining/activities etc would be greatly appreciated.

In this order were my favorites

Passions on the Beach

Madame Janettes

Gianni's (get the lobster)

Flying Fishbone - you need a taxi or rental car for this one if memory serves me right.

El Gaucho

You need to grab a breakfast at Linda's Dutch Pancake House too.

We ate at others too, but these are what I remember and would recommend them all. The food across the island is better than any other island in the Caribbean I have been to. Aruba is such an awesome place, enjoy!

Wow...this thread is old. As noted in the post before yours, I went for the first time in 2010, and we went back last summer. Here's my bullet list of things to consider....you didn't note where you are staying, so not all will apply.

-If you can afford it and want to explore, rent a Jeep. We used more4less rentals and had a good experience. Why a Jeep? Well, the whole northern part of the island is a huge park. You can off-road to some really cool stuff. A lot of the coolest parts of the island are the most desolate. This allows you to see A LOT more than if you just stay at your hotel.

-Downtown Oranjestad is a little desolate at night. During the day when the cruise ships come in, it's a lot busier.

-There's a casino at the Marriott.

-For food:

El Gaucho Steakhouse - I'd say the best bone-in ribeye I've ever had.

Driftwood - Doesn't look like much, but they have very good fresh seafood

Flying Fishbone - Make reservations NOW and see if you can get them for sunset. It's on the southern part of the island, so you can see sunset. Beach-side dining. Some tables are literally IN the water. Pricey, and food is OK, but atmosphere is awesome.

Linda's Dutch Pancakes - MUST stop. Amazing dutch pancakes. Have them for dinner or breakfast. It's in a strip mall east of Palm/Eagle beach. So so good.

-For water fun

-If you have small kids and a car, consider going to Baby Beach for the day (extreme south east corner). The water is super calm, and it's a great place for kids. Do keep away from the entrance to the ocean as if you get out that way, the current can be strong.

-Tons of places to go snorkeling, but the best place I've found is off Malmok beach, north of Palm Beach. It's where all the day-cruise boats take folks to snorkle. If you have a car and bring your own gear, you can park for free and snorkle as long as you want. I've seen turtles, trumpet fish, french angle fish, etc. Very cool.

-If you have a jeep and can find it, you can drive to the natural pool. It's serious off-roading to get there, but it's accessible. Look online for some directions.

My favorite beach destination in the America's by far. You'll have a blast.

I went about 7 years ago.. I know the very top of the island theres suppose to be a very good snorkeling/restaurant in the water

I agree with almost everything above...

Linda's :hifive: I wish I could get that #### around here... Baby Beach is great too.

Slightly disagree on El Gaucho's, but nonetheless it was still def very good.

I'll be staying at a relatives home so no need for advice on hotels.

My bro and I are considering doing some charter fishing. Not sure if anyone has experience with that in Aruba/Caribbean?

Thanks for all the recommendations guys! Please keep them coming!

The true north coast of the island is all park and rock and HUGE waves. Like..."if I fell into the water I'd probably drown" waves. Maybe the North West part...but not the true north.

Looked into it but never actually did it. Fishing is supposed to be quite good though.

If you catch fish and want to eat it, several places (Driftwood and Flying Fishbone for sure) allow you to bring your own fish and they'll prepare it for you for a fee.

#### yeah. A buddy of mine bought the Dutch Pancake mix they sell in the local grocery, and a kit to make them, but said they aren't nearly as good.

I had the Amaretto ones. They literally served it with a shot of Amaretto to dump on them. So good.

Yup. Southern side. Baby beach is SE over past the refinery. I'd bet Flying Fishbone is the restaurant you're thinking of too. There's apparently some good snorkeling down there too, but I was never able to find the easy way to get to it.

Me and two friends chartered a boat about 12 yrs ago. I caught a 4.5 ft wahoo which was fun and worth the trip. The captain also set a line for marlin but said they weren't in season at the time. Not sure what the odds are of hooking something like that.

Thanks again guys!

Anyone else have suggestions/recommendations for activities?

We're also seriously considering doing some SCUBA diving. Anyone have experience?

Deepster - Sounds like fun! Was it a full day trip or a half day trip? Also, do you remember how much it cost?

It was a half day. I really don't remember the exact cost but it was pretty reasonable and I don't recall even hesitating at the price. There was a cooler full of cold Amstels (not Amstel Lights) on board too. And the captain hacked up the fish for us afterwards, it was similar to swordfish steaks.

Some seriously good shore dives, giant coral formations. Dive shop we used was at the southern end near baby beach, no idea if they are still there or not, small outfit.
