Asking for a transfer. Update on last page. (1 Viewer)

Kind of a spinoff of that thread asking how much of a pay increase to leave your job.

my company is national but pays everyone at my position the same salary structure and does not account for the cost of living. I work in a very high COL city.

i am currently looking for a new place to live and it's a real struggle to find anywhere decent so it's made me think I should put in a request for a transfer to another office.

There are some areas we have locations in where I could live like a king at my current salary. I could get my own nice apartment and a car instead of staying in this city and living in dumps with sketchy roommates and take public transportation.

the major problem for me is that I love the crew I work with now and I love working for my immediate supervisor who is very hands off. I don't want to work with anyone else, these are the guys that trained me, and wouldn't know what to expect in another office.

The dynamic could be completely different but the struggle living hand to mouth here with no savings is taking a toll on me.

In another office my personal life could be much more comfortable but I may not enjoy work nearly as much.

i would appreciate any advice.

i am also concerned with how it may be perceived if I ask for a transfer. Would I be viewed as a disloyal malcontent?

if it helps at all there has been quite a bit of talk about me being in line for a promotion to management in the future when the company expands to other locations. That talk started last year and I've been waiting I just have no idea when the expansion may happen.

If you get along with and trust your manager have this conversation with him.  Tell him you are trying to get ahead but the COL makes it tough and you wonder what he knows about the dynamics  in the other locations.

I am going to but right now isn't a good time as they are shuffling him around the company to train in various offices and do sales.

i thought it might be best to wait until my next review at the end of the year if no time until then presents itself.

hes only been in the office once in the last 2 months and I feel like it would be best to talk face to face.

Kind of an odd policy for a company.

Anyways, it appears you arent in much of a hurry. Id wait until the end of the year review. By then, the new management position might be more clear. If it still isn't clear by then, it probably isn't happening and you should adjust accordingly. I don't see how asking for a transfer could be seen as being a disloyal malcontent. You are staying with your company and your reasoning for asking for the transfer makes sense IMO.

What policy are you referring to?

no COL pay structure?

im not sure it's an official policy it's just what they do. Probably because it's a high turnover position

and no I'm not in an immediate hurry . I'm thinking well in advance that I may have to ask for a transfer to help out my future

I would strip down the conversation just to "My family and I are looking to relocate to be closer to family/better schools/avoid a psycho stalker. But I enjoy my work and believe this is a good company to work for. Would it be possible to transfer to one of our offices in Boston/Chicago/Denver (have this ironed out already) as long as there is a business need?"

It seems like they value you as an employee by the promotion talk, so they won't want to lose you. It will likely cost them more money to replace you and also would lose all that productivity through the hiring process and getting the new guy caught up. Then they have to worry about the new guy working out and hopefully not having to repeat the process again in a year.

Keeping talent in house is usually a priority. If there's a need at another location and you're not asking for more money to go there, this shouldn't be a big issue.

The family excuse wouldn't work. My boss and I are tight outside of work and he knows I really have no attachments to where I currently live and have no family.

the entire crew has a personal relationship outside of the office.

So if you're so tight with these guys just be honest. "Hey I'm getting killed here financially and need to move. Can the company accommodate me?". If you can't or don't want to be honest, the rest of it still stands and I'm not sure what else we can help you with...

Step 1: Identify locations where you would be comfortable moving to.

Step 2: Do some research and find out if they're looking to add people at those locations. Cross off any Step 1 locations where they don't.

Step 3: Hand over the list and ask to transfer because you want to stay with the company.

Not really concerned about location as long as I can afford transportation.

i don't really care for where I live now.

my only real concern is that there is enough work for me in the office so I can continue to progress and earn commission bonuses regularly

Why wait until your review? Start showing some initiative now so you can discuss the results at the review. Start the discussions now.  Even though your boss is hands off, you should take the initiative to have regular meetings with him (if you don't already) and ask him how you can help him out. Think of new ways of doing the same old thing. Think outside just your job. Most people leave their job because of their immediate supervisor. He won't always be your boss. If I was your boss I would be a little concerned if you don't want to try new things because you are afraid of the different environment/boss. You can frame a discussion about transferring to be about exploring new areas - it can be a positive discussion. You said you are at an entry level position  but they are talking about a promotion to management? Are you interested in other jobs within the company or just want to be able to keep earning commission bonuses regularly? Maybe start having some career growth discussions with your boss.  I realize you said he is travelling a lot and not in the office much but you need to take the initiative. You want to have been having these discussions before the new management positions/locations open up. Good luck.

My review is the latest I will wait because my manager is swamped lately. They have been sending him back and forth across the country.

we have already had discussions about me being in line for a promotion and about me being underpaid.

His response was to tell me to get a second job because more than half our branches are not profitable , ours being one of the growing branches, and they won't be giving me a raise right now beyond my 2% annual raise.

After we had that conversation we got a new COO that is shaking up operations and weeding out the valueless employees There has been a lot of turnover and people coming and going in the other branches since she started 7 months ago and she is in the process of downsizing certain positions in the company that don't require direct client interaction like payroll and data entry. There has been no company expansion since she started because so much is in the process of being changed and it doesn't appear like the adjustments will be complete until the end of the year. She's a tough one but our branch never gets anything but praise from her so we never worry.

As for thinking outside the box, I get praised a lot for finding more efficient ways to do things and always being prepared.

i was not expecting any promotion right away because I haven't even been here two years and there is a lot I haven't been trained in yet because of all the shakeup a.

i would still earn commission in a management position. Bonuses are given per branch based on profit and divided up among that crew.

Sounds like you got it covered   BTW, you need to start worrying when no one is worrying.

Worry about what?

We exceed the goals put forth by corporate week in and week out.

once a week all the branches have a company wide conference with the COO to go over everything. The conference usually lasts two hours and she only spends 5 minutes tops on us. It's always...

"ok everything is done. Every order is filled. Good job guys. Now on to...."

You sound confident and ready to move to the next level.

Finally found a room for rent with non-ghetto roommates.

$625 a month all included plus my share of the WIFI.

Moving in this week. Won't have to ask for that transfer any time soon.
