I think a fold is the right play. Certainly, I think if you are not at the table watching these players play, saying there is no way I fold is just silly. You should care if he has trips, because then you are huge dog. Perhaps you mean, he is going to have to show me the trips at the river after I have put all my cash in the pot. Assani is representing a big pair and two players don't seem to care. I think Assani bet too little on the flop (I would prefer a pot bet) but when there is a smooth call and pot sized bet, now he is the middle. He could call here heads up, but he has to fear a reraise from the player who has smooth called twice- who does then put in a massive reeraise.

Just take a break dude. You have been absolutely slaughtered over the last 15 sessions.

He doesnt want to listen. He feels he can figure this out on his own. THere is nothing wrong with that, Ive been that way. However, in the end, it is usually the advice of others that fixes it.

Unfortunately I stopped using poker tracker since the party upgrade. I have tried to download the patch, but it didn't seem to help me at all.

My friend, Kent, knows more about it than I do, and next time hes over I'll have him set it up for me.

How can you get a read off players while playing 6 tables without Poker Tracker. I think you're playing at a huge disadvantage compared to the guy who's only playing one or two tables with Poker Tracker.

My online game sucks compared to my live game for this exact reason. When I play live I can get a feel for all the players at the table. I'm usually comfortable after around an hour of play. I actually hate it when I get hands like AQ early because I don't have reads on any opponents yet.

I only got poker tracker a month ago when I started this quest. Before that time, I had been a poker semi-pro for about 3 years(with a 3 month break in there) and had never used it at all

When you were semi-pro was it mainly on-line or live games? And did you multi-table like you're doing right now.Also, do you get a feel for the other players when your playing 6 tables? Are you able to tell when a guy has folded hands for an hour and now he's calling your sizeable bet?

When I was in college, I would 10 table the $215s as my only soucrce of income. Did that for about 2 years.Have recently been getting into more cash games, and now I see the point of studying opponents even more.

Mostly all online.

It seems obvious to me that your way better than most of the players your playing. I think though, that something like Poker Tracker would be a huge equalizer for someone who's game isn't as good as yours. Information is the greatest advantage someone can have. If I knew that you play 20% of hands, and of those 20% of hands you play 80% hard, than I'm starting out with a huge advantage over someone that knows nothing about my style.If you're able to win or break even without Poker Tracker than I think you would destroy these guys if you had it.

I agree with you, and I'm going to get PT up and running soon and plan on using it to the fullest.

You didnt answer my question. Against multiple oppoennets with that flop, do you raise any bet that is put out?Also, I would be willing to bet Assani has a tag for someone who raises with any 2 and continuation bets 99% of the time. His range of hands is large for this instance, where hand ranges that beat him are not

I am not avoiding your question, I am reponding to the hand. When you are in a three way hand, you cannot focus on one opponent. As I said, if there was only one opponent (middle player folds) I would reraise. Heads up pocket rockets are often a through ticket on a seemingly innocuos board. However, you are not heads up. What I am concerned about, and what causes me to strongly consider laying down this hand, is the player yet to act- not the player that raised first. I don't get any bonus point or any money back by coming in second: you can't let one loose player run you into the nuts. You have to beat them both. That is one of the difficulties of being out of position. I do think that Assani is setting himself up for someone to take a shot at him betting only half the pot, but the once that shot is taken you have to reevaluate. WHen you factor in how bad he is running, and how if he loses this pot it is cost him doubting himself and his reads in addition to 1800, I think the fold is fine.JAA, Sometimes you want to talk about specific points as if they are in a vacuum, which they rarely are.

I think you could have been more aggressive on the flop. When you check, bet and the call the raise, it gives him control. You flopped a monster. Even if he has AAd, you still have a ten outs twice, and the Q or 7 of D devastates him. I think you could have raised it to between 1 and 1.5K him on the turn as well, but that is plenty easily to say with someone else's money.

Agree completely, and that's what I was thinking too. I think you're up against AJ, QQ, or KK, and I'm pushing my chips into the middle here and hoping for the best.

I was planning on making a big check raise on the flop. When someone was aggressive preflop and I didn't show much strength, I would much rather check raise than simply bet out if I would rather win the hand right there(which I did in this hand). His check behind me surprised me, but I definitely thought I was good then, so I bet the turn. His raise scared me, but I figured I still had outs. The bet on the river was just too big imo.

I considered just calling preflo in order to disguise my hand, but I wouldn't be able to handle losing my stack here, so I decided to play it safe. As it turns out, that is what won it for me- After the hand he commented "nice wait" as if the fact that I took so much time to raise made him think I was bluffing...wow. First off great thread Assani, i like many others have been following along and reading through the hands. I have definitely learned a lot by doing so and appreciate you sharing all this information with us.

A bad run is inevitable, but the one thing i've noticed is that in the beginning your patience was remarkable and you were making great laydowns waiting to get into better spots. For example you were making laydowns against big aggression even when you had big pocket pairs over the flop. You were folding 2 pair to big aggression, and on and on. In short your patience in waiting for opportunities where you could be the aggressor or where you fell into a huge hand was amazing.

It seems your losing some patience and forcing things a bit, that is the one thing that stands out to me in following the thread from the beginning.

This is an EXCELLENT observation. Seriously.

When are you coming out of retirement Otis?I just have that feeling that your going to go on a tear when you return. My feelings are right 85% of the time, so the odds are with ya.

I played a little today at lower stakes, and I ended up throwing chairs across my living room. As I explained to my confidante Dr. Gunks today, I simply have bad luck. Today was a beautiful example of what has happened to me repeatedly over my poker career. I won't post hand histories or describe specifics, but I'll say that I sat at two tables and simultaneously got all my chips in on both tables as a big favorite, and lost my entire stacks on both. This is within 6 seconds of each other. And this happens almost religiously.

Now, I know that people are going to tell me that it's impossible for someone to have "bad luck." That the odds have to "even out" somewhere, eventually. Well, in response, I say, who says it has to even out over one person's poker career? Who's to say I simply can't be playing under a hex for the past 3 years and for my foreseeable future? I got my QQ in today against your pair of tens with all my chips in the middle, but who's to say that the turn and river won't make the bad guy's runner-runner winning flush against me more than against other people?

I truly wish there were a way to track luck in pokertracker. Some people have to find more bad beats than others. I bet I've found more than anyone. I almost pride myself in that fact. I am tempted to write a letter to Stars to ask them if I can see my file in their top secret luck database, because I would then have my proof.

In sum, I am a good poker player, and I'm not afraid to say that out loud. I regularly win tournaments live. And, without fail, online, far more often than not, I get all my money into the middle when I have the best of it. It just so happens that the turn and river card always result in the improbable ending where the other guy gets the chips and I have to reload.

It's gambling for a reason.

For all of the reasons above, I hate poker, with a burning, fiery passion.

I broke even over a six month period, probably somewhere around 90k hands. I have a friend who's been a professional player, live and online, for a few years. He's spent many weeks over that span of time at my place watching me play online, and it's gotten to the point where he brings over popcorn and soda and gets ready for the 'Green and Gold Poker Comedy Hour'.Friday, on two different tables within about 30 seconds of each other, I get a full stack all-in preflop with KK vs. AJo and AQo respectively. I lose the first one to a 1-card runner straight, and the second to a flopped ace. On Thursday I got it all in with KQ on a AJT rainbow flop against TWO people, turn is a jack to give them both boats. On Wednesday I had pocket aces twice, both times up against a smaller pocket pair that hit a set. Luckily being in position and the idiots slowplaying saved me from losing two much on those two hands. These are all beats that happen to everyone, no big deal. But it has happens so frequenty lately that my buddy will literally leave the room crying, he's laughing so hard.

Last month I had a day where I was hit over the head by the deck. After the fireworks were over, I looked back over my hands and saw I had flopped 7 sets in a two hours period. I lost 5 of them to 1-card straights, 1 to a flush, and one to set over set. Sadly, it was limit poker that day so I couldn't protect my hands.

Yes, you can be unlucky. 90k hands of break-even or losing poker is possible for a long-term winning player, just not likely. It helps to be able to go over your hands with someone, and not just your 'big' hands. The little hands that bleed away your stack need to be examined too.

So no, Otis, it's not just you. As long as you aren't pissing away your stack after getting bad beated, and you're playing consistant, solid poker, it should eventually turn around. There is only so many times you can get your money in as a favorite and lose before you start winning. At least, that's what I tell myself.

I think a fold is the right play. Certainly, I think if you are not at the table watching these players play, saying there is no way I fold is just silly. You should care if he has trips, because then you are huge dog. Perhaps you mean, he is going to have to show me the trips at the river after I have put all my cash in the pot. Assani is representing a big pair and two players don't seem to care. I think Assani bet too little on the flop (I would prefer a pot bet) but when there is a smooth call and pot sized bet, now he is the middle. He could call here heads up, but he has to fear a reraise from the player who has smooth called twice- who does then put in a massive reeraise.

His range of hands is large for this instance, where hand ranges that beat him are not

I am not avoiding your question, I am reponding to the hand. When you are in a three way hand, you cannot focus on one opponent. As I said, if there was only one opponent (middle player folds) I would reraise. Heads up pocket rockets are often a through ticket on a seemingly innocuos board. However, you are not heads up. What I am concerned about, and what causes me to strongly consider laying down this hand, is the player yet to act- not the player that raised first. I don't get any bonus point or any money back by coming in second: you can't let one loose player run you into the nuts. You have to beat them both. That is one of the difficulties of being out of position. I do think that Assani is setting himself up for someone to take a shot at him betting only half the pot, but the once that shot is taken you have to reevaluate. WHen you factor in how bad he is running, and how if he loses this pot it is cost him doubting himself and his reads in addition to 1800, I think the fold is fine.JAA, Sometimes you want to talk about specific points as if they are in a vacuum, which they rarely are.

That's a pretty tedious interpretataion of what RFW is saying. A raise and a fold behind you on this flop is different than a second smooth call and a raise. I'd prefer a flop in which I can see reasonable draw that fits well with my opponents hand ranges. Something in which 87s draws nicely, for example. Stack sizes also matter as both these guys have us covered. Were they less, I'd be more likely to gamble. IMO, it's a thin spot, at best.

No you are hearing, because you are not listening. I have grown accustomed to this in threads with you. I will say this one last time. I am concerned with the player smooth calling in the middle who ultimately reraises, as much or moreso than the person who raises me. Then I am done, because you don't listen, don't want discuss, you just want to be right. You act as if you are asking questions to get more information, but you are not. You might be right, but I think most winning NL cash game players would disagree with you. You keep talking about AJ or QQ. You pay zero attention to the fact that you are caught in the middle. So I will break this down and all my concerns:

A) First, you are wrong about not having concerns about the player raising it to 320. If I have any set here, I am going to raise the pot and pray to the poker gods that my opponent is like you and willing to overplay and overpair for 2K. This is how I made a ton of money playing poker, doubling up through people irrationally overplaying a hand gone south. Sets are hard to come by, and good players are looking to double up when the get them- you double up by betting and raising. Here are some thoughts from Troly regarding how beatable NL is online because there are no shortage of players willing to overplay and overpair post flop. Dodds in the same thread talks about a player who reraises you is telling you that he is willing to play for his whole stack. So while it is not likely the last player has JJ, if you are really surprise if he shows you a set, I don't think much of your play,

B) How does the hand unfold? Assani raises UTG and gets two callers with deep stacks. He then bets again- announcing _ I still have the best hand and my big pair is good and the next player (who has a decent amount of chips) smooth calls. This should set off bells. With a player yet to act behind him, he does not raise or fold. Right now I am very concerned if he is a decent player, because he has played this hand so far like he has a small pocket pair (he called on the flop- he did not raise- encouraging another call). Now the player behind him raises. My problem is not the strength of his hand, which I agree with you, I am likely to be able to beat. The problem is twofold: 1) tI am faced with a $250 raise where if I push, I am only going to get called with KK or a hand that can beat me. I am risking 1600 to win 700. I need to right more than twice as often as I am wrong. 2) This bet has opened up the action to the player who has called to reraise, and I have no read on what he is going to do, but he has called twice, unfazed by me representing a big pair.

C) You can't assume your opponents are idiots, especially in a $2000 NL game. You have to assume that they are skilled until they prove otherwise.

D)Saying that there is no way you lay a hand down with no knowledge of your opponents, the texture of the game, etc, in a multiway pot tells me you eat a lot of #### sandwiches with overpairs after the flop.

So what I am saying is this:

If I have AA UTG and I raise preflop, get two callers, bet again after the flop, get smooth called by a player, get raised by another, I am going to consider laying it down, because at this point, I am likely to have to play the hand for all of my chips. There are some situations where I would play for my chips, but it is by no means an automatic play. The poker world is filled with mediocre players that shove all their chips into the middle when their aggression has been met with reaggression, and then curse their bad luck that their overpair, which they had played strongly had the misfortune to run into a set. I try not to be one of them.

Anyone who has played with me will tell you I am not a weak timid player. I just don't assume I am going to push when I pick up KK or AA.

I think a fold is the right play. Certainly, I think if you are not at the table watching these players play, saying there is no way I fold is just silly. You should care if he has trips, because then you are huge dog. Perhaps you mean, he is going to have to show me the trips at the river after I have put all my cash in the pot. Assani is representing a big pair and two players don't seem to care. I think Assani bet too little on the flop (I would prefer a pot bet) but when there is a smooth call and pot sized bet, now he is the middle. He could call here heads up, but he has to fear a reraise from the player who has smooth called twice- who does then put in a massive reeraise.

Do you play those Js that fast against with a rainbow flop? All I see here is AJ.

Well, then I think you are missing a hand. I see another hand behind me that has smooth called me twice. I am out of position every round and now I could be in the middle of a raising war.

His range of hands is large for this instance, where hand ranges that beat him are not

I am not avoiding your question, I am reponding to the hand. When you are in a three way hand, you cannot focus on one opponent. As I said, if there was only one opponent (middle player folds) I would reraise. Heads up pocket rockets are often a through ticket on a seemingly innocuos board. However, you are not heads up. What I am concerned about, and what causes me to strongly consider laying down this hand, is the player yet to act- not the player that raised first. I don't get any bonus point or any money back by coming in second: you can't let one loose player run you into the nuts. You have to beat them both. That is one of the difficulties of being out of position. I do think that Assani is setting himself up for someone to take a shot at him betting only half the pot, but the once that shot is taken you have to reevaluate. WHen you factor in how bad he is running, and how if he loses this pot it is cost him doubting himself and his reads in addition to 1800, I think the fold is fine.JAA, Sometimes you want to talk about specific points as if they are in a vacuum, which they rarely are.

That's a pretty tedious interpretataion of what RFW is saying. A raise and a fold behind you on this flop is different than a second smooth call and a raise. I'd prefer a flop in which I can see reasonable draw that fits well with my opponents hand ranges. Something in which 87s draws nicely, for example. Stack sizes also matter as both these guys have us covered. Were they less, I'd be more likely to gamble. IMO, it's a thin spot, at best.

What sort of draws on the flop do you hope to come across with AA?My interpretation of RFWs post was in fact generalized purposefully. AA is a very straight forward hand. There are no real draws on the board. There were no limp-reraises, no check raises. AF foldes to a raise (before re-raise) comes out. At this point, the pot cant be considered a true multi-way since 1 hasnt acted yet.

Im not saying AA wins that hand, but folding to 1 raise with what I would consider an almost perfect flop is not a good cash strategy IMHO. Why bother playing AA when you fold to any aggression? Its not like they were played slow to the river.

I would be willing to be AF's table image set this hand up perfectly. "That Assani guy bluffs all the time, thats such a weak bet, Im going to make him pay to chase".

Also, Is it possible for both Villians not to raise JJ behind AF? With JJ, I am usually raising any preflop bet for information. Not a hand I want to call to the river.

1) I disagree. Do you push all in pre-flop every time with AA. If not, then you don't try to what you are saying. So then, am I hearing that you simply push every time after the flop you see a bet? I think you have a hard time both asserting this is wise or getting much support for it by competent players.2) This is simply wrong.

JAA, my only question for you is why are you so locked in on JJ? You are losing to 33 and 22 as well and the mid-position player here makes a very odd (and worrisome) call. This is a very blanky board. If there were a 2 flush or a normal straight draw or some sort of draw, I may be more inclined to agree with you. But given there are no draws out, calling in this situation should set off major alarm bells. I'm not saying if I would lay down or not. But it certainly wouldn't be (and shouldn't be) an automatic push. If the mid player is a player I respect, I'm definitely done. If he is a fish, I would be more inclined to play here. Knowing very little about him, I'm inclined to believe he isn't a fish. Assani was playing with him so I trust his judgement here. This read isn't off the raiser, it's off the caller. And you have totally ignored this guy.

I think RFW hit on something pretty important. You are risking 1600 to win 700 because you aren't going to get called by hands you can beat (I would dispute that a good player even would call here with KK). Did Assani throw away a winner? Maybe. But I'm going to stand by another great thread - AA and KK mostly win small pots or lose large ones.

So having played in the World Poker Tour this past week has left me wanting much much more. I'm tired of being an average online semi-pro player, and I'm going to try to "make a run."

During the next 100 days, I hope to make $100,000. I hope to do this playing online $10/20 NLHE, $10/20 PLOh/l8, and NLHE MTTs. I think I have enough skill that if I were to have decent luck, I could indeed accomplish this. However, focus and dedication have always been a problem for me. Thus I am going to keep a blog on footballguys and on my myspace blog. I hope that this will keep me accountable. I will check in every day and post my progress as well as key hands.

I don't expect to accomplish this goal. I realize that it is lofty. But I need to challenge myself. I realize that posting all of my key hands may give opponents an advantage(for example, David Dodds reads FBGs and I play with him from time to time), but I'm not so much concerned with that, as I feel as if I mix up my play enough that it will be moot.

No you are hearing, because you are not listening. I have grown accustomed to this in threads with you. I will say this one last time. I am concerned with the player smooth calling in the middle who ultimately reraises, as much or moreso than the person who raises me. Then I am done, because you don't listen, don't want discuss, you just want to be right. You act as if you are asking questions to get more information, but you are not. You might be right, but I think most winning NL cash game players would disagree with you. You keep talking about AJ or QQ. You pay zero attention to the fact that you are caught in the middle.

My tone may not be one you like, and you may find it abrasive, but I never toss out insults like this.Im paying perfect attention here. Preflop I have the best hand. A flop comes that is not scary. Please note that while playing AA, 90+% of the time, it is not the NUTS after the flop. Meaning, there is no way to determine if its the best hand when the flop comes unless you all flip up cards. Someone could have JJ, someone could have 33 or 22. Does this mean you fold to a raise? Does this mean you slow down because you are "caught in the middle"? What do you think your opponents put you on with your EP raise? Did they put AF on AA? What did they put him on? We dont know. What we do know is our c-bet was raised in LP with 1 to act. You dont know Gus is going to reraise, or if he will fold to LP raise. Please dont bring that into the equation

So I will break this down and all my concerns:

A) First, you are wrong about not having concerns about the player raising it to 320. If I have any set here, I am going to raise the pot and pray to the poker gods that my opponent is like you and willing to overplay and overpair for 2K. This is how I made a ton of money playing poker, doubling up through people irrationally overplaying a hand gone south. Sets are hard to come by, and good players are looking to double up when the get them- you double up by betting and raising. Here are some thoughts from Troly regarding how beatable NL is online because there are no shortage of players willing to overplay and overpair post flop. Dodds in the same thread talks about a player who reraises you is telling you that he is willing to play for his whole stack. So while it is not likely the last player has JJ, if you are really surprise if he shows you a set, I don't think much of your play,

It certainly is possible a set is out there. With that raise, what do you think the odds of him having a set actually are? When EP bets out into your set in a multi way pot with 2 callers in front of you, would you rather call or raise in your position? Please consider the texture of the flop. Your response here tells me you want to raise. That means you put AF on an overpair. If you do have a set and do have an overpair, why on earth would you raise? Because he will overplay? More on this later.

B) How does the hand unfold? Assani raises UTG and gets two callers with deep stacks. He then bets again- announcing _ I still have the best hand and my big pair is good and the next player (who has a decent amount of chips) smooth calls. This should set off bells. With a player yet to act behind him, he does not raise or fold. Right now I am very concerned if he is a decent player, because he has played this hand so far like he has a small pocket pair (he called on the flop- he did not raise- encouraging another call). Now the player behind him raises. My problem is not the strength of his hand, which I agree with you, I am likely to be able to beat. The problem is twofold: 1) tI am faced with a $250 raise where if I push, I am only going to get called with KK or a hand that can beat me. I am risking 1600 to win 700. I need to right more than twice as often as I am wrong. 2) This bet has opened up the action to the player who has called to reraise, and I have no read on what he is going to do, but he has called twice, unfazed by me representing a big pair.

C) You can't assume your opponents are idiots, especially in a $2000 NL game. You have to assume that they are skilled until they prove otherwise.

D)Saying that there is no way you lay a hand down with no knowledge of your opponents, the texture of the game, etc, in a multiway pot tells me you eat a lot of #### sandwiches with overpairs after the flop.

What I gather from this paragraph is that you dont play with AF much. I dont play with AF at all, but I have read his posts here. If you havnt figured it out yet, AF will call/raise with any 2. If you are so impressed with the level of this 2k game, you can give them credit for also figuring this out. And please dont give me this "He then bets again- announcing _ I still have the best hand and my big pair is good and the next player". AF c-bet and thats it. He is basically required to with this flop no matter what he is holding. I would have preferred to see it larger, but I would have suspected he was trying to trap. If you suspect someone is trying to trap you, and you have a set, let them trap.

So what I am saying is this:

There are some situations where I would play for my chips, but it is by no means an automatic play. The poker world is filled with mediocre players that shove all their chips into the middle when their aggression has been met with reaggression, and then curse their bad luck that their overpair, which they had played strongly had the misfortune to run into a set. I try not to be one of them.

Anyone who has played with me will tell you I am not a weak timid player. I just don't assume I am going to push when I pick up KK or AA.

I know your game rf. You desperately want to "make the play" and double up while having the best of it. Thats fine, but more likely than not your game is going to proceed yourself and find you dont get any action in a game like this. I dont play any 10/20 anymore, but when I did I was profitable. I dont mind you knocking my game, thats fine.Now, onto my conclusion.

1. You were wrong about the LP raiser. LP raiser didnt have a set. He isnt going to fold that set. I can tell you for a fact he most likely didnt have AJ either because he has more than enough odds to call EP call-reraise. He had nothing. He sensed weakness and and tried to steal. I understand your fears in a multiway pot. I dont think you are sammiched, but that is only because EP hasnt shown ANY aggression yet. If AF was able to give us insight into his game, maybe. Also, if there were more broadway cards showing, I might be more concerned of a semi-bluff, same with it 2-suited. But it isnt.

I would be surprised to see 33 or 22 be turned up. I would be less surprised to KK-QQ. I wouldnt be very surprised per se to see JJ turned up, but losing doesnt mean I played bad poker.

I also understand your concern about betting 1600 to win 700. Valid, that is for sure. However, I would have called behind LP and most likely pushed EP re-raised, if he still reraised. Maybe if I stay in the pot he doesnt reraise. At this point it is academic.

In the end, I think I win more money with my "overplayed PPs" than lose money against fast played sets. Slow played sets raised to the turn ... now that is a different ball game. Im going to read your link, I wanted to reply to your post first.

I agree with JAAs reads here, and for those reasons I'm coming over the top.As I said above, I'm putting the caller on squat, and I'm putting the raiser here on AJ, QQ, or KK. If he burns me with 22, I'll live with that hit, but I don't see it based on that flop raise.

My ring experience is different than yours. My ring experience has shown me that mojority of hands include people calling a PF raise and folding to a c-bet. Espeically with a flop as ragged at this one. That said, I dont think it is a multiway pot until I get 2 flop callers. This is more exaturated due ot AF being in earliest position. my opinion, that is for sure. I simply dont lay much credence in ring games with a PF raise and not 2 calling the cbet.

Thanks for the reply. I dont remember saying I would push, I remember saying I would go broke. My actual play would be to call the LP raise. We dont know if EP would still re-raise in this instance, but if he did and LP folded, I would most likely push in which the pot-odds would be much different.Now, if EP simply called LPs raise, now bells are going off.

I read the thread, good read. The limp-reraise is an instant giveaway. In lower limit games and early in tournaments, I think it is +EV.Honestly, in most ring games, I never bet AA UTG or UTG +1. No you are hearing, because you are not listening. I have grown accustomed to this in threads with you. I will say this one last time. I am concerned with the player smooth calling in the middle who ultimately reraises, as much or moreso than the person who raises me. Then I am done, because you don't listen, don't want discuss, you just want to be right. You act as if you are asking questions to get more information, but you are not. You might be right, but I think most winning NL cash game players would disagree with you. You keep talking about AJ or QQ. You pay zero attention to the fact that you are caught in the middle.

Caught in the middle of what? 2 preflop limpers in late position? Just remeber, you were the first to toss insults out here. My tone may not be one you like, and you may find it abrasive, but I never toss out insults like this.Im paying perfect attention here. Preflop I have the best hand. A flop comes that is not scary. Please note that while playing AA, 90+% of the time, it is not the NUTS after the flop. Meaning, there is no way to determine if its the best hand when the flop comes unless you all flip up cards. Someone could have JJ, someone could have 33 or 22. Does this mean you fold to a raise? Does this mean you slow down because you are "caught in the middle"? What do you think your opponents put you on with your EP raise? Did they put AF on AA? What did they put him on? We dont know. What we do know is our c-bet was raised in LP with 1 to act. You dont know Gus is going to reraise, or if he will fold to LP raise. Please dont bring that into the equation

So I will break this down and all my concerns:

A) First, you are wrong about not having concerns about the player raising it to 320. If I have any set here, I am going to raise the pot and pray to the poker gods that my opponent is like you and willing to overplay and overpair for 2K. This is how I made a ton of money playing poker, doubling up through people irrationally overplaying a hand gone south. Sets are hard to come by,  and good players are looking to double up when the get them- you double up by betting and raising. Here are some thoughts from Troly regarding how beatable NL is online because there are no shortage of players willing to overplay and overpair post flop. Dodds in the same thread talks about a player who reraises you is telling you that he is willing to play for his whole stack. So while it is not likely the last player has JJ, if you are really surprise if he shows you a set, I don't think much of your play,

It certainly is possible a set is out there. With that raise, what do you think the odds of him having a set actually are? When EP bets out into your set in a multi way pot with 2 callers in front of you, would you rather call or raise in your position? Please consider the texture of the flop. Your response here tells me you want to raise. That means you put AF on an overpair. If you do have a set and do have an overpair, why on earth would you raise? Because he will overplay? More on this later.

B) How does the hand unfold? Assani raises UTG and gets two callers with deep stacks. He then bets again- announcing  _ I still have the best hand and my big pair is good and the next player (who has a decent amount of chips) smooth calls. This should set off bells. With a player yet to act behind him, he does not raise or fold. Right now I am very concerned if he is a decent player, because he has played this hand so far like he has a small pocket pair (he called on the flop- he did not raise- encouraging another call). Now the player behind him raises. My problem is not the strength of his hand, which I agree with you, I am likely to be able to beat. The problem is twofold:  1) tI am faced with a $250 raise where if I push, I am only going to get called with KK or a hand that can beat me.  I am risking 1600 to win 700. I need to right more than twice as often as I am wrong. 2) This bet has opened up the action to the player who has called to reraise, and I have no read on what he is going to do, but he has called twice, unfazed by me representing a big pair.

C) You can't assume your opponents are idiots, especially in a $2000 NL game. You have to assume that they are skilled until they prove otherwise.

D)Saying that there is no way you lay a hand down with no knowledge of your opponents, the texture of the game, etc, in a multiway pot tells me you eat a lot of #### sandwiches with overpairs after the flop.

What I gather from this paragraph is that you dont play with AF much. I dont play with AF at all, but I have read his posts here. If you havnt figured it out yet, AF will call/raise with any 2. If you are so impressed with the level of this 2k game, you can give them credit for also figuring this out. And please dont give me this "He then bets again- announcing _ I still have the best hand and my big pair is good and the next player". AF c-bet and thats it. He is basically required to with this flop no matter what he is holding. I would have preferred to see it larger, but I would have suspected he was trying to trap. If you suspect someone is trying to trap you, and you have a set, let them trap.

So what I am saying is this:

If I have AA UTG and I raise preflop, get two callers, bet again after the flop, get smooth called by a player, get raised by another, I am going to consider laying it down, because at this point, I am likely to have to play the hand for all of my chips. There are some situations where I would play for my chips, but it is by no means an automatic play. The poker world is filled with mediocre players that shove all their chips into the middle when their aggression has been met with reaggression, and then curse their bad luck that their overpair, which they had played strongly had the misfortune to run into a set. I try not to be one of them.

Anyone who has played with me will tell you I am not a weak timid player. I just don't assume I am going to push when I pick up KK  or AA.

I know your game rf. You desperately want to "make the play" and double up while having the best of it. Thats fine, but more likely than not your game is going to proceed yourself and find you dont get any action in a game like this. I dont play any 10/20 anymore, but when I did I was profitable. I dont mind you knocking my game, thats fine.Now, onto my conclusion.

If EP does have a set, it would be bad poker to re-raise on the flop with 2 players showing aggression. Again, I repeat: You have no reason to reraise here. You have to suspsect that AF is going to call LPs bet. I would assume he does. Maybe he folds, but I would put it better than 50/50.

I understand your fears in a multiway pot. I dont think you are sammiched, but that is only because EP hasnt shown ANY aggression yet. If AF was able to give us insight into his game, maybe. Also, if there were more broadway cards showing, I might be more concerned of a semi-bluff, same with it 2-suited. But it isnt.

I would be surprised to see 33 or 22 be turned up. I would be less surprised to KK-QQ. I wouldnt be very surprised per se to see JJ turned up, but losing doesnt mean I played bad poker.

I also understand your concern about betting 1600 to win 700. Valid, that is for sure. However, I would have called behind LP and most likely pushed EP re-raised, if he still reraised. Maybe if I stay in the pot he doesnt reraise. At this point it is academic.

In the end, I think I win more money with my "overplayed PPs" than lose money against fast played sets. Slow played sets raised to the turn ... now that is a different ball game. Im going to read your link, I wanted to reply to your post first.

I agree with JAAs reads here, and for those reasons I'm coming over the top.As I said above, I'm putting the caller on squat, and I'm putting the raiser here on AJ, QQ, or KK. If he burns me with 22, I'll live with that hit, but I don't see it based on that flop raise.

I wouldnt go over the top. With EP left to act, we have to give him some credence. That said, I call LPs raise. My guess would be that EP folds, but how this hand has played out, that doesnt seem to be the case.If I call, and EP calls/raises, I am certainly in a predictament. I am very worried now. At this point everyone has established they have better than TPTK. With no draws on the board, I am most likely beat. Thinking back through this, I could avoid all of this by folding the original raise right?

While it is certainly possible EP has a hand, I dont think he does. I dont think this flop warrants 2 sets. 1 flopped set, sure, but 2? Certainly possible, just not probable.

My read is simple, EPs call-raise against LP on the flop (not on the turn) tells me he thinks LP is full of it and cant beat his TPTK. I think a set (especially in a 2k game) would be far less probable. IMO, there are virtually ZERO scare cards for a set. It would be in a sets best interest to call-call-call-call-call on this flop. Even in a set over set situation, why on earth would either of them try to get all there money in on the flop?

It's always in the set's best interest to raise, because you're looking to stack up people that can't get away from their overpairs. If they fold, so what? They most likely weren't putting much more money in the pot anyway. When you raise an identical amount in the same situation with a draw, you like that fold.

I'm flabbergasted that anyone would risk their stack in a multiway pot with an overpair. Wait for a better spot. If you come over the top you're only getting called by a better hand anyway. You're risking being pot commited with your entire stack to win 1/4 of a buyin or so with just a single pair. That's just crazy talk.

Calling the raise is possible here, but what are you going to do when he pushes on the turn? Fold? Call? Are you hoping he checks behind? I push the turn with a set or a draw in his position. If I have TPTK I'm not putting another dime in this pot after the flop call. Where is the value here? Call the big all-in and hope he's on a draw?

I think a fold is the right play. Certainly, I think if you are not at the table watching these players play, saying there is no way I fold is just silly. You should care if he has trips, because then you are huge dog. Perhaps you mean, he is going to have to show me the trips at the river after I have put all my cash in the pot. Assani is representing a big pair and two players don't seem to care. I think Assani bet too little on the flop (I would prefer a pot bet) but when there is a smooth call and pot sized bet, now he is the middle. He could call here heads up, but he has to fear a reraise from the player who has smooth called twice- who does then put in a massive reeraise.

Do you play those Js that fast against with a rainbow flop? All I see here is AJ.

I am not avoiding your question, I am reponding to the hand. When you are in a three way hand, you cannot focus on one opponent. As I said, if there was only one opponent (middle player folds) I would reraise. Heads up pocket rockets are often a through ticket on a seemingly innocuos board. However, you are not heads up. What I am concerned about, and what causes me to strongly consider laying down this hand, is the player yet to act- not the player that raised first. I don't get any bonus point or any money back by coming in second: you can't let one loose player run you into the nuts. You have to beat them both. That is one of the difficulties of being out of position. I do think that Assani is setting himself up for someone to take a shot at him betting only half the pot, but the once that shot is taken you have to reevaluate. WHen you factor in how bad he is running, and how if he loses this pot it is cost him doubting himself and his reads in addition to 1800, I think the fold is fine.JAA, Sometimes you want to talk about specific points as if they are in a vacuum, which they rarely are.

When I am on the top of my game, which unfortunately has not been a lot recently, I will lay down anything lower than 2 pair on the flop to what I consider to be aggression. I will do this every time, and I don't care if my opponents know this.(Of course, I'm not always at the top of my game....but I will be for the next few days. I can guarantee that).

What do you think he has? MP I'm guessing 22 or 33, LP I'm guessing was pulling a Harrington and trying to steal. I don't see MP not trying to isolate you with JJ but it is a possiblity.

So having played in the World Poker Tour this past week has left me wanting much much more. I'm tired of being an average online semi-pro player, and I'm going to try to "make a run."

During the next 100 days, I hope to make $100,000. I hope to do this playing online $10/20 NLHE, $10/20 PLOh/l8, and NLHE MTTs. I think I have enough skill that if I were to have decent luck, I could indeed accomplish this. However, focus and dedication have always been a problem for me. I don't expect to accomplish this goal. I realize that it is lofty. But I need to challenge myself. The reason I am willing to mix is a few fold. First, Im pretty sure AFs image is loose. Second, Ive put my opponents on ranges of hands and I think I see a winner more often than not (just speaking to LPs raise). Finally, I dont know what EP is going to do. If he holds, I like my chances. If he doesnt, Im worried. Why would I take that chance? Well, chances are he doesnt have a hand.If EP calls, I revaluate the turn. I feel I am behind at this point. However, I need to see him call before I fold.

If EP folds, my goal is to get all my money in the middle. I might be beat, but thats my objective.

As the hand plays out, I call down EP and I feel im 50/50 to win the pot.

Your bolded statement reiterates my point. You push the turn, not the flop. Raising the flop can be value for sets, but why bother? You want to get all your money in the middle and have the chance to triple up with a ragged board. If the board was not so ragged, I definately play faster, but it isnt.

As far as waiting for a better spot. What spot are you looking for? You have an opportunity to triple up here. Your hand may not be the best, but its far from a loser. Are you going to nut-peddle to wait for your better spot?

My basic point is this:

There are 3 general situations:

Hands in which I'm the aggressor

Hands in which my opponent is the aggressor

Hands in which I have a monster hand(and it doesn't matter who the aggressor is becasue I'm just trying to maximize my value).

The strength of my hands really doesn't matter at all in the first two situations. I could have 2-7os and miss the flop or I could have top pair with an ace kicker. I don't like to play in pots in which my opponent has assumed the role of aggressor...it puts me in a scary situation where I don't know what I should do or how I will react. I don't know which cards are outs for me or if I'm ahead of behind. Big pots are lost this way imho.

I wrote this on the first day of my quest. Clearly I was playing well during those first few days. Yesterday, for the first time in a while, I felt at the top of my game. Regarding the AA hand, I would point back to this post. Let me repeat: THE STRENGTH OF MY HAND DOES NOT MATTER. I don't care that I have AA. I would play AA there the same as I would play 2-7os when I'm on the top of my game.JAA, consider for a second that I have 2-7os. Then how would you play the hand(assume that for some reason I tried to bluff preflop to get myself in that position)? One pair on the flop is not a monster even if that pair is AA.

I don't know what he has. I honestly don't. I'm out of position, I have shown aggression which has been met with re-aggression from 2 opponents, and I have no clue what he may have. 1.  You were wrong about the LP raiser.  LP raiser didnt have a set.  He isnt going to fold that set.  I can tell you for a fact he most likely didnt have AJ either because he has more than enough odds to call EP call-reraise.  He had nothing.

It's always in the set's best interest to raise, because you're looking to stack up people that can't get away from their overpairs.  If they fold, so what?  They most likely weren't putting much more money in the pot anyway. When you raise an identical amount in the same situation with a draw, you like that fold.

I'm flabbergasted that anyone would risk their stack in a multiway pot with an overpair.  Wait for a better spot.  If you come over the top you're only getting called by a better hand anyway.  You're risking being pot commited with your entire stack to win 1/4 of a buyin or so with just a single pair.  That's just crazy talk.

Calling the raise is possible here, but what are you going to do when he pushes on the turn?  Fold?  Call?  Are you hoping he checks behind?  I push the turn with a set or a draw in his position.  If I have TPTK I'm not putting another dime in this pot after the flop call.  Where is the value here?  Call the big all-in and hope he's on a draw?

The reason I am willing to mix is a few fold. First, Im pretty sure AFs image is loose. Second, Ive put my opponents on ranges of hands and I think I see a winner more often than not (just speaking to LPs raise). Finally, I dont know what EP is going to do. If he holds, I like my chances. If he doesnt, Im worried. Why would I take that chance? Well, chances are he doesnt have a hand.If EP calls, I revaluate the turn. I feel I am behind at this point. However, I need to see him call before I fold.

If EP folds, my goal is to get all my money in the middle. I might be beat, but thats my objective.

As the hand plays out, I call down EP and I feel im 50/50 to win the pot.

Your bolded statement reiterates my point. You push the turn, not the flop. Raising the flop can be value for sets, but why bother? You want to get all your money in the middle and have the chance to triple up with a ragged board. If the board was not so ragged, I definately play faster, but it isnt.

As far as waiting for a better spot. What spot are you looking for? You have an opportunity to triple up here. Your hand may not be the best, but its far from a loser. Are you going to nut-peddle to wait for your better spot?

When I hit a set against AA against an opponent who has a tough time laying down AA.And theres no way you 'triple up' here unless you hit your set on the turn or river.

I wasn't going to reply in here, as there were obviously much better players typing out their thoughts, but I think the AA hand was very interesting.First, I think you were caught in a Harrington-type squeeze play. You were out of position with a nice holding. LP player had to figure he was in control of the action no matter what you had. With a ragged board out there, he could represent any hand and probably win the hand.

Second when I get AA UTG, I'll make a very large size bet (not a standard 2-4x BB raise, I'm talking 12-15x BB raise) and either try to get a looser player to call and take it down on the flop, or I'll pull a Doyle Brunson like limp and hope for a raise behind me so I can re-raise large and take this down preflop.

With AA in early position it's like a double edged sword. You want action, but when you get action you're probably in trouble with a few good players. Personally, I agree with JAA's analysis in this instance. I think you were against KJ or AJ for the initial raiser and the LP smooth caller probably had KK, or maybe nothing at all. But, exactly like RFW said, you'd be risking $1600 to win $700 as the only hands that would call you would have you beat (in this case more than likely a set), so I have no problem with you laying it down. I would have played the hand out and probably took a subsequent beating.

I think a fold is the right play. Certainly, I think if you are not at the table watching these players play, saying there is no way I fold is just silly. You should care if he has trips, because then you are huge dog. Perhaps you mean, he is going to have to show me the trips at the river after I have put all my cash in the pot. Assani is representing a big pair and two players don't seem to care. I think Assani bet too little on the flop (I would prefer a pot bet) but when there is a smooth call and pot sized bet, now he is the middle. He could call here heads up, but he has to fear a reraise from the player who has smooth called twice- who does then put in a massive reeraise.

I am not avoiding your question, I am reponding to the hand. When you are in a three way hand, you cannot focus on one opponent. As I said, if there was only one opponent (middle player folds) I would reraise.(This would imply that I think you are likely to have LP beat with AA- which means I don't think he has a set) Heads up pocket rockets are often a through ticket on a seemingly innocuous board. However, you are not heads up. What I am concerned about, and what causes me to strongly consider laying down this hand, is the player yet to act- not the player that raised first.

Here are some thoughts from Troly regarding how beatable NL is online because there are no shortage of players willing to overplay and overpair post flop. Dodds in the same thread talks about a player who reraises you is telling you that he is willing to play for his whole stack. So while it is not likely the last player has JJ, if you are really surprise if he shows you a set, I don't think much of your play,
