Assani's Poker Thread (4 Viewers)

Poker tip for Assani: Don't bet on the Chiefs at home against the Chargers
Yeah that didn't work. Chargers are such a tough team to handicap. Really thought it was a good bet going in. I had the line at SD -2. It opened at -4 and when it got to -6 I had to jump on it.

How are people getting money in full tilt these days? I had a visa gift card but that didn't work and epassporte seems to take a while to set up, is there any site that you can sign up at and get money in to fulltilt quickly? I love Hawaii but with the weather sucking I'm spending more time in my hotel room than on the streets.
Throw me a few extra dollars for the time and gas costs of driving to the bank and send me a check and I'll transfer you the money if you want. Will do this for anyone thats interested....just PM me for address to send check.
Thanks for the offer but I'll be stuck on the island for a while with no access to anything but paypal, I may just suck it up and sign up for epassporte then deposit in a week as I'll still be out here.

I was surprised it was 6 myself. SD doesn't play well in KC and the Chiefs spanked them at the Q two months ago. But like you said, the Bolts are a tough team to handicap. Obviously I'm a homer, but I think they're coming together at the right time and are about to go on a nice run. Keep in mind that 4 of their 5 losses are @ NE, @ GB, @ Jax, and @ Minn. Those losses don't look bad right now.The demise of the Chargers is overblown. Fade them at your own risk. I'm gonna bet on them the next 4 weeks and hope to ride a hot streak. Hijack over....

Thanks for the insight, I'll be sure to jump on the other side to make boatloads.

Sweat activated for the $25k guranteed, Assani.

BTW, I was just able to use my Visa debit card to deposit money. Never had a problem using that on FT.

well maybe I'll try my mastercard debit from washington mutual when I get home, if it doesn't work I'll send you the transfer eddie.

Assani -

You seem to be playing a lot of Omaha8 NL -- Any specific strategies. I am looking at this game and seeing plenty of opportunity at lower levels. Interested to hear why you have been playing this so much.

Oh yeah - sweat still on

seems to be close to an all-in fest in the 25K tourney... You must not be getting many cards I think I have seen you play 3 hands in the last 30 minutes

yea thats just a combo of not many hands and them respecting my raises. I've stolen my share of blinds. And you're right, its an all in fest for the shortstackers now. I'm still comfortable though somewhat.

Somehow I'm still alive in this one despite never doubling up...have just stole the blinds once per round and been fine. Still very very shortstacked, but only 131 left now.

:lmao: $1500 for $69 is still pretty good
meh, think I'm still down on the day actually due to some bad sessions at plo8. Still alive in the $27.50 though on Stars, which is pretty amazing considering how shortstacked I was when I first mentioned it here. 68 left there.

Assani -You seem to be playing a lot of Omaha8 NL -- Any specific strategies. I am looking at this game and seeing plenty of opportunity at lower levels. Interested to hear why you have been playing this so much.Oh yeah - sweat still on
Short answer is that I play it because its my best game. I'm a solid hold em player, but I'm not close to world class or anything. I beat up on tournaments and mid/low stakes NLHE games simply because the competition there sucks. I'm pretty good at exploiting poor HE players, but if you put me in a tough game(especially shorthanded) I can easily be beat. Moreover, with so many people playing HE these days the average skill level has really risen and there are some great players out there. Its funny to think how easy games like $10/20 NLHE on Party used to be, as nowadays anything $2/4 and up is pretty challenging(even $1/2 is no pushover). Conversely theres a lot of bad play at O8 at the lower levels still even online because the game hasn't become as popular.NLO8 and PLO8 has some differing strategies. I would advise you to start off with PLO8, so I'll give the advice for that first.....At $1/2 and below, you can win by just playing a tight style and not taking many risks. Thats what I'd advise you to do as you learn. Don't worry about making fancy plays or anything yet. As you learn more and more you can slowly try them out. Imo to beat $2/4 currently you have to play a bit more agressively and mix up your play. To beat $3/6 or $5/10 you have to be a very solid player imo, especially because the games are often shorthanded. This is all online btw, obviously live(if you can find it) would be easier just like with HE.Playable hands from any position(when there has been no raise in front of you): Any A2, any AA, any A3s, A+ any two wheel cards, TT-KK + 2 wheel cards, 2345, 2346, any 4 cards T-A, 9TJQ.From LP I'd add in things like A4s, KK+two low cards, QQ+ two low cards, etc. With regards to calling preflop raises- If the hand is playable and you're in position then I'd generally call....maybe cut out the worst of the hands I've listed but not many. Take good notes on which hands each player likes to raise with. You're now in position and have information- that allows you to call with almost every playable hand. I would be a lot tigher when calling raises from the blinds. Maybe cut out 40-50% of the hands I listed.Re-raising: Do it with any AA if you or your opponent is close to being all in with your reraise. If you're deeper stacked then I wouldn't do this as it completely gives 1/2 of your hand away. With AA2 or AA3s then I'd re raise all the time simply because your hand is strong enough to warrant it.Limping vs raising: There are three kinds of raises imo- pot sweeteners, isolations, and blind steals....Blind Steals: Bottom line- if you're in LP and nobody has entered the pot yet then come in for the max raise because its gives you the added expectation of stealing the blinds occassionallyIsolations: When you have hands that play good heads up like AA or AK2 then you want to raise the max and try to get it down to one or two opponents.Pot Sweeteners: If you're in LP with a solid multiway hand like A234 double suited and there have been many limpers then go ahead and throw in a raise that you think nearly everyone will be priced in to call. Hands like A234 do not play that well heads up, so I wouldn't try to isolate although its not the biggest mistake in the world. Its a fine line and depends greatly upon your read of your opponents. After the flop....First thing you need to learn is the different odds. Go to twodimes and use their odds calculator a lot. You need to know things like a low draw and a flush draw is about a 2-1 favorite over a naked set. Learn all of these odds. They're vital to this game.O8 is largely a game about quartering people. If you have A2 and flop the nut low with nothing else at all(and no draws) then proceed cautiously. Its never a huge mistake to let that go on the flop. Learn to recognize quartering situations. Put opponents on hands and determine who is quartering who. Theres not a ton for me to say here, it just takes practice. Play some hands, thing about them, and feel free to post them here if you want advice.Bet your made hands(but realize when theres a possibilty for a freeroll for you or your opponent) strongly. Never draw to non nut hands when you're still a beginner...not until you've demonstrated that you can crush $1/2 and below would I say that you're good enough to trust your reads and draw to non nut hands. and really its not necessary to beat the lower stakes games.Take a ton of notes on all players. Understand what hands they bet and how they bet them. At the higher levels, extensive notes are vital. At the lower levels, simply note who the strong players are and who are the idiots and target the idiots and value bet the hell out of them. For the most part don't bluff much. Obviously things like the bare ace flush bluff can be done when theres no low or low draw out there. And if you sense a ton of weakness on a board without a lot of draws, then yeah you can go ahead and bet 1/2 pot or so to try to steal it. But take it easy with this....most people try to jump into this too quickly. Demonstrate that you can beat teh game over a few ten thousand hands by playing tight and sound first.O8 can be tedious at times. There are a lot of split pots and it can take hundreds of hands for you to finally get a shot to win a decent sized pot. Especially if you start off losing a big one, its easy to loosen up and make some mistakes. You need to avoid this right now. All of what I said here is very very basic advice, and I don't think its the best possible way to play...but I do think its the best way to play for a beginner, as it should enable you to win without being a great player or being able to read hands that well. As with all poker, the real key ability that separates the marginal players from the top players is the ability to read opponents and put them on a narrow range of hands as often as possible....keep practicing this skill even on hands that you aren't in. I'll stop for now, feel free to add on with any questions, comments, etc.

Went to the Wynn last night. Booked a short $30 win at $1/3 while waiting for my $2/5 seat, then played for probably 11 hours at $2/5 which is my longest session in a while. At my initial table, nothing big really happened. There was one fish who kept my afloat by paying me off a few times, but I'd say I was up only around $50 after a few hours(had bought in for $1000, so had $1050 now). The table broke and I moved to the other $2/5 game.

As soon as I get there, I see theres an interesting hand going on. Two opponents, both very deepstacked are in a hand. Flop is on the board, something like 49T. One guy has $400 sitting out there as a bet(not sure if it was a raise or a bet), pot has a few hundred in it at least already. Other guy thinks for a while then shoves. Guy folds. After the hand theres a decent amount of banter back and forth..."keep raising with nothing, I love it" type of stuff.

Very next hand the guy who had bet $400 tries to raise it to $100 preflop after everyone had folded to him, but he accidentally just threw in the $100 chip so it was just a call(never said "raise"). Everyone folds to blinds, SB limps, BB checks. Before flop even comes out guy says "ok well I'm betting $100 on the flop no matter what" and throws it in. Blinds check, his $100 counts, and the blinds think for a while then folds. SB seems really angry at the bettor and mentions that hes been doing it all night and its pissing him off.

Very next hand I get KK in BB. Same guy raises to $20 from EP, folds to button(same guy in first hand who won the hand) who calls, I raise to $90. EP maniac calls, buttons folds. I have $1050 at start of hand, maniac has me covered by a decent amount.

At this point, I'm a bit concerned. His image is such that I can't put him on anything at all, and any aggressive play by him has to be met with a ton of skepticism. With that said, even maniacs hit hands from time to time, so the fact that he has me covered has me worried. I remember thinking that I wouldn't be surprised at all if he called me down then put in a huge bet on the river. I decided to try to keep the pot relatively small and to just use my best judgment.

Flop comes 234 with 2 spades. I do have the K of spades. I bet $100, he calls.

Turn is another 2 non-spade. I bet $200, he calls.

River is a 6 of spades. I check, he goes all in. Its $660 to me. I think for a long while. As I'm thinking he gives me a speech about how hes "going home if he loses this hand." Your move.

What I did

I called. He said "I have a 5." I said "you win" but held on to my cards. He showed 36os, I took the pot with kings and twos. He tipped the dealer about $50 and left, which made me feel a bit bad for winning the hand and only tipping $5, but whatever.

Before he left he told me that it was a terrible call, and said "thank you." Then I think he realized he was being a jerk, and said "My fault man...good call."

What I think I should've done

I really hate when people give me stupid "Jamie Gold-esque" speeches while I'm trying to think. I hate it because all it does is slow down my decision. My thought process basically always goes "What is he trying to get me to do? I should do the opposite then. Oh wait, but maybe hes thinking that and trying to think one level higher than me. Yeah, just forget it, lets get back to thinking about the hand...." I swear thats my exact thought process every time someone does this. Maybe I just need to improve my analysis skills in this regard.

I was getting well over 2-1 on my call, which was the deciding factor(He actually did ask me before he left why I called and I told him "getting over 2-1 odds and thought there was more than a 33% chance you were bluffing" which was the absolute truth). Still it was a tough decision because theres no reason he couldn't have had 35 instead of 36 or had the spades. His range was so wide open based upon what I had seen of him so far.

I didn't have any more cash on me and would've left if I had lost(I never go to the ATM at the casino...I dunno, just hate the feeling of doing that). And that was impacting me a little bit. But I thought it over, and I determined that the best move was to call and I made myself do what I thought was best. Would definitely be interested in analysis though from others.

I ended up winning over $1000 more and left a $2200 winner. I hadn't had $3200 on the table at once in a long time(summer of 2006) and it felt good.
